Book Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavioral Intervention Plans a School Social Work Perspective

Download or read book Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavioral Intervention Plans a School Social Work Perspective written by Lambrine A Sideriadis and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of students in public schools with severe, disruptive, and persistent problem behaviors is growing at an alarming rate. An evidence-based process, the functional behavioral assessment (FBA) and behavioral intervention plan (BIP) has proven effective in reducing or eliminating severe problem behaviors that create barriers to learning. School social workers have historically played an important role in assisting students to remove barriers that impede their ability to make educational progress, yet there has been insufficient research conducted about school social workers' use of the FBA/BIP or their perceptions of this promising process. This study represents the first effort that explores the extent to which school social workers in the State of Connecticut use the FBA/BIP to help students reduce or eliminate problem behaviors and to promote appropriate school behavior. Survey research was conducted to examine school social workers' perceptions of the FBA/BIP as an effective and practical process and to determine the extent to which school social workers perceive that they conduct the FBA/BIP with fidelity. Robert K. Merton's strain theory provides the conceptual framework to understand the ways that school social workers have adapted the FBA/BIP in their practices.

Book Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plans

Download or read book Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plans written by Kelly Dietrich Legg and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Throughout America, schools are completing federally mandated Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) for children with behavioral disorders and using those FBAs to create behavior intervention plans (BIP). Research suggests the need for FBAs; unfortunately legislation does not define the key features. Lack of guidelines and training are likely to result in an invalid assessment or one left unused in behavior intervention planning. Students' needs are often lost in the legal paperwork, which leaves both the school and the child yearning for a viable solution for challenging behaviors. Through literature review, this thesis examines the history, research, and outcomes of the Functional Behavior Assessment and how FBA applies to students with behavioral disorders in regard to academic success and the development of positive behavior intervention plans."--leaf 4.

Book Conducting Functional Behavioral Assessments

Download or read book Conducting Functional Behavioral Assessments written by J. Ron Nelson and published by . This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is designed to help school personnel conduct functional behavior assessments (FBAs) and to develop effective behavior intervention plans (BIPs). The manual begins by providing background information on FBAs including: (1) the four-stage model of collaborative problem solving that is used to conduct FBAs and develop subsequent BIPs, including problem definition, problem analysis, development of a BIP, and monitoring progress; (2) why it is necessary to conduct an FBA and the four categories of possible functions for problem behaviors, including access, escape/avoidance, autonomic reinforcements, and multiple functions; and (3) when an FBA should be conducted and when it is necessary under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1997. This background information is followed by a description of how to conduct FBAs in school settings. Also described is how the FBA informs the BIP, the guiding principles used to match behavioral interventions and supports to the function or functions of the target behavior, and the categories of behavioral interventions and supports that should be considered when developing a BIP. Examples of completed forms for escape and access are appended. (Contains 103 references.) (CR)
