This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Write Your Own Political Economy, Exercises for Colleges, High-Schools, and Independent Students The title of this book indicates the method pursued. It does not indicate the method of thought but the method of instruction; it indicates further that the instruction is intended to be self-instruction. Since, moreover, there can be no instruction which is not essentially self-instruction, a certain form of endeavor is here esteemed best to accomplish self-instruction of the beginner. This is a form which will call forth his activities and thus illustrate at the outset the principle that man's activity, even more than his wants, is calculated to further his progress. The stimulation of mental effort is sought to be promoted by written exercises. These exercises consist, so far as the contribution of the teacher is concerned, in titles suggestive of crucial economic topics, and also in some dozen suggestions for the treatment of each exercise. The primary intention is that the exercises be, on the part of the student, an original analysis of the situation suggested. Whether he be encouraged to read the text-writers for assistance in his analysis, or be discouraged in seeking for aid outside of his own consciousness, or, at most, outside of discussion with parents and comrades, will depend upon his stage of advancement. This book was released on 2018-07-29 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Political Economy This book has been prepared for use in High Schools and Academies. In writing its pages, I have been Well aware that the object sought is the most difficult at which an economist can aim. Whether this effort to reach the minds of pupils of fifteen, sixteen or seventeen years has been successful, will only be learned on actual trial. In preparing a text-book for students in the period of life indicated, I have not thought it necessary to make the work childish. It is no Primer of Political Economy which is here offered but a substantial course of study in this vitally important subject. I can only hope that it will be found that those for whom it has been designed will be able to follow that course to their own satisfaction and with good results. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Political Economy: Hints to Students and Teachers The interest which the public now manifests in economic studies led me to put the material of my lectures into a general form, in order that they might assist inquirers in any part of the country. No special knowledge has, therefore, been demanded of the reader by way of prep aration for the substance of what I have intro duced into this volume. By avoiding, as far as possible, all technical language, I have sought to make the inquiry useful to any general read er of intelligence who may be interested to know how to study political economy. But that which I have most at heart is the exten sion of instruction in political economy in all schools and colleges, and the improvement in methods of teaching the subject. I need hardly say that I shall be glad if these pages call out any suggestions by which these two objects may be furthered. They contain matters which I thought the student should know oi, but which it is not necessary for him to study. I would suggest that in no case should the words printed in Italics be passed, until it is known that the class has a clear sense of their meaning. Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
