Book Writ in Barracks

Download or read book Writ in Barracks written by Edgar Wallace and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2023-01-05 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Wallace’s first published works, ‘Writ in Barracks’ is a collection of poems written while the author was stationed in South Africa and acting as a reporter. While there is a sense of ‘king and country’ that pervades the work, what sets this book apart from others is the contrast of outward bravado against inner fear. Honest, searing, and occasionally funny, these poems offer an incisive insight into life behind the lines, during what came to be known as the Second Boer War. ‘Writ in Barracks’ is the perfect poetry collection for those interested in colonial history. Born in London, Edgar Wallace (1875 – 1932) was an English writer so prolific that his publisher claimed that he was responsible for a quarter of all books sold in England. Leaving school at the age of 12, Wallace made his first steps into the literary world by selling newspapers on the corner of Fleet Street. He worked as a war correspondent after joining the army at age 21, which honed his writing abilities. This led to the creation of his first book ‘The Four Just Men.’ Wallace is best remembered as the co-creator of ‘King Kong,’ which has been adapted for film 12 times (most notably directed by ‘Lord of the Rings’ director, Peter Jackson, and starring Jack Black and Naomi Watts). However, he leaves behind an extensive body of work, including stories such as ‘The Crimson Circle’ and ‘The Flying Squad’.

Book excerpt: Ilya Kaminsky’s astonishing parable in poems asks us, What is silence? Deaf Republic opens in an occupied country in a time of political unrest. When soldiers breaking up a protest kill a deaf boy, Petya, the gunshot becomes the last thing the citizens hear—they all have gone deaf, and their dissent becomes coordinated by sign language. The story follows the private lives of townspeople encircled by public violence: a newly married couple, Alfonso and Sonya, expecting a child; the brash Momma Galya, instigating the insurgency from her puppet theater; and Galya’s girls, heroically teaching signing by day and by night luring soldiers one by one to their deaths behind the curtain. At once a love story, an elegy, and an urgent plea, Ilya Kaminsky’s long-awaited Deaf Republic confronts our time’s vicious atrocities and our collective silence in the face of them.

Book Everything Has Already Been Written

Download or read book Everything Has Already Been Written written by Gerald Janecek and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovative poets such as Vsevolod Nekrasov, Lev Rubinstein, and Dmitry Prigov are among the most prominent literary figures of Russia in the 1980s and 1990s, yet they are virtually unknown outside Russia. The same is true of the numerous active Russian performance art groups, especially the pioneering Collective Actions group led by the brilliantly inventive Andrei Monastyrsky. Everything Has Already Been Written strives to make Moscow Conceptualism more accessible, to break the language barrier and to foster understanding among an international readership by thoroughly discussing a broad range of specific works and theories. Janecek’s study is the first comprehensive analysis of Moscow Conceptualist poetry and theory, vital for an understanding of Russian culture in the post‐Conceptualist era.

Book Shimmering Details Volume II

Download or read book Shimmering Details Volume II written by Péter Nádas and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2023-11-21 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magnum opus of one of Europe's greatest living writers. In Shimmering Details, Volume II, Péter Nádas delves deeper into his and his parents’ lives during the tumultuous years spanning the rise of Hungarian communism in 1948 to the brutal suppression of the 1956 uprising. Zeroing in on this critical period—which overlapped with the formative years of his childhood—Nádas concludes his monumental history of a family whose own experiences and fortunes are deeply intertwined with two centuries of Hungarian history. This second volume is a composite portrait of life lived at the nexus of world-historical forces—a jewel-like study that holds up different facets of the human experience to the light of Nádas’s singular prose style. What emerges is a memoir of unusual insight and exceptional power. Hailed by Deborah Eisenberg as an “extraordinary writer,” Nádas has confirmed his place among Europe’s greatest living authors.
