Download or read book The Mathematical Gardner written by David A. Klarner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: -~- T he articles in this book are dedicated to Martin Gardner, the world's greatest expositor and popularizer of mathematics. While our papers are confined to this single subject, Gardner's interests and accomplishments have a wide range of subjects. Hence, we have entitled the book the Mathematical Gardner, and would like to see other volumes such as the Magical, the Literary, the Philosophical, or the Scientific Gardner accompany it. Of course, our title is also an appropriate pun, for Martin Gardner's relationship to the mathematical community is similar to a gardener's relationship to a beautiful flower garden. The contributors to this volume comprise only a small part of a large body of mathematicians whose work has been nurtured by its exposition in "Mathematical Games"; Martin's column which appears every month in Scientific American. More than just a mathematical journalist, Martin connects his readers by passing along problems and information and stimulating creative activity. Thus, he is a force behind the scenes as well as a public figure. Two people were particularly helpful in putting this book together.

Book Noah Webster s Spelling Book Method for Teaching Reading and Spelling

Download or read book Noah Webster s Spelling Book Method for Teaching Reading and Spelling written by Donald L. Potter and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a little known fact that reading was taught by means of spelling for over 200 years. Today the impact of spelling on reading achievement is not as well appreciated as it once was. The late Dr. Ronald P. Carver did extensive research into the causal relationships between spelling instruction and reading ability. Carver concluded, "One very important way to learn how to pronounce more words accurately is sometimes overlooked, that is, learning to spell more words accurately." (Causes of High and Low Reading Achievement, p. 178). He also notes that "spelling was used to teach reading for almost 200 years, but by the beginning of the 20th century, the tide had so turned that learning to spell was largely seen as incidental to learning to read." Quoting C. A. Perfetti, Carver observed, "practice at spelling should help reading more than practice of reading helps spelling." (p. 179. In June of 2004 Miss Geraldine Rodgers sent me her essay, "Why Noah Webster's Way Was the Right Way." She argued from the history of reading and the psychology of reading that Webster's spelling book method of teaching reading and spelling was superior to all other methods. I was surprised to learn that that Webster, in his 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language, defined a Spelling Book as, " A book for teaching children to spell and read." He also wrote under the entry, Spelling, "To tell the name of letters of a word, with a proper division of syllables, for the purpose of learning the pronunciation. In this manner children learn to read by first spelling the words." You can see that Webster was quite clear about the dual purpose of the spelling books in his day. You can imagine my surprise at the improvement I began to get with my tutoring students when they started working through Webster's Spelling Book. I decided to type up my own edition to use in my private tutoring and my tutoring work at the Odessa Christian School in Odessa, TX, where I teach remedial reading and Spanish. In this edition, I have retained everything in the original 1908 (descendant from the 1829 edition). The only differences relate to formatting. I chose to list the words in rows instead of columns. I also allow the words to divide at the ends of lines. I have found that this works fine for all students. We are teaching students to read and spell by syllables and not by word shapes or context. When reading and spelling are taught by the Spelling Book Method, all guessing at words from shape or context is completely eliminated. The student's total focus is on pronouncing the words correctly, high levels of comprehension are a natural result.

Download or read book Affect in Relation written by Birgitt Röttger-Rössler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of research on affect and emotion have brought out the paramount importance of affective processes for human lives. Affect in Relation brings together perspectives from social science and cultural studies to analyze the formative, subject constituting potentials of affect and emotion. Relational affect is understood not as individual mental states, but as social-relational processes that are both formative and transformative of human subjects. This volume explores relational affect through a combination of interdisciplinary case studies within four key contexts: Part I: “Affective Families” deals with the affective dynamics in transnational families who are scattered across several regions and nations. Part II: “Affect and Place” brings together work on affective place-making in the contexts of migration and in political movements. Part III: “Affect at Work” analyzes the affective dimension of contemporary white-collar workplaces. Part IV: “Affect and Media” focuses on the role of media in the formation and mobilization of relational affect. In its transdisciplinary spirit, analytical rigor and focus on timely and salient global matters, Affect in Relation consolidates the field of affect studies and opens up new avenues for scholarly and practical co-operation. It will appeal to both students and postdoctoral researchers interested in fields such as anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, media studies and human development.

Book Collaborative Consultation in the Schools

Download or read book Collaborative Consultation in the Schools written by Thomas J. Kampwirth and published by . This book was released on 2014-12 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Note: This is the loose-leaf version of Collaborative Consultation in the Schools and does not include access to the Enhanced Pearson eText. To order the Enhanced Pearson eText packaged with the loose-leaf version, use ISBN 0134019644. This authoritative book looks at the consultation process as a collaborative, problem-solving endeavor designed to help practitioners assist others in their work with students who have, or are at risk for, behavioral or learning problems. With a focus on having consultants bridge the gap between research and practice in schools, and on striving to initiate evidence-based practices whenever possible, the authors stress providing interventions that are proportional to the student's needs. They look at how, through data-based systems-change, schools are redistributing their resources along MultiTiered Systems of Support (MTSS) so those in greatest need receive the most intensive help. The premise is that MTSS, which includes Response to Intervention (RtI) and School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) requires collaborative consultation to be successful. Throughout the book, numerous activities and video vignettes promote consultation skills. Readers not only read about conducting a problem-solving interview or managing a student in a crisis, they also observe and role-play the consultation skills involved in seeking a successful resolution. The Enhanced Pearson eText features embedded video and activities. Book Talk Fiction

Download or read book Talk Fiction written by Irene Kacandes and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everywhere you turn today, someone (or something) is talking to you?the television, the radio, cell phones, your computer. If you think some of the novels and stories you read are talking to you too, you're not alone, and you're not mistaken. In this innovative, multidisciplinary work, Irene Kacandes reads contemporary fiction as a form of conversation and as part of the larger conversation that is modern culture. ø Within a framework of talk as interaction, Kacandes considers texts that can be classified as "statements," that is, texts that wholly or in part ask for their readers to react? to talk back?to them in certain ways. The works she addresses?from writers as varied as Harriet O. Wilson, Margaret Atwood, William Faulkner, Virginia Woolf, Graham Swift, G_nter Grass, John Barth, Julio Cort¾zar, and Italo Calvino?conduct their interactions in certain modes to accomplish different sorts of cultural work: storytelling, testimony, apostrophe, and interactivity. By focusing on texts within these groupings, Kacandes is able to relate the different modes of talk fiction to extraliterary cultural developments in our oral age?and to show how such interactions, however contrary to the dominant twentieth-century view of literature as art for art's sake, help to keep literature alive and speaking to us.
