Book Identity and Collaboration in World of Warcraft

Download or read book Identity and Collaboration in World of Warcraft written by Phillip Michael Alexander and published by Parlor Press LLC. This book was released on 2018-03-25 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electracy and Transmedia Studies | Series Editors: Jan Rune Holmevik and Cynthia Haynes. IDENTITY AND COLLABORATION IN WORLD OF WARCRAFT tells the story of what happens when a Cherokee gamer, using a storyteller’s perspective and a methodology built from equal parts Indigenous tradition and current academic field knowledge, spends a year in what was at-the-time the largest online video game in the world. Following from work by James Paul Gee and Bonnie Nardi, Phillip Michael Alexander ventured forth into the game world to see what someone who was a gamer long before he was an academic might see in this same fascinating virtual space. In working with, playing with, and sharing the stories of a ten-person “raid” group—players performing at the highest level within the game—he set out to determine how those gamers most invested in success built identities and communities. The resulting work is a reader-friendly, theory-informed, virtual-boots-on-the-virtual-ground look at how gamers craft in-game identities, find like-minded gamers to form group identities, then organize to do staggering amounts of work in a virtual world. For anyone who ever wondered what the appeal of World of Warcraft is, Phillip Michael Alexander illustrates how some of the most active, most engaged, and most talented players spend their time in that virtual world.

Book excerpt: One day in the 21st century, Soy, a grade-four pupil, happened to visit Tristar Hills in the Imaginary World in another space-time by the magic power of his jade pendant that his grandfather obtained at the Moon Gulf at the site of Tristar Hills many years ago. By then, Tristar Hills led by Longreat and the Worm Tribe headed by Madam Kell in Chamber Isle had been in war for a long time. In order to destroy Tristar Hills for domination of the Imaginary World, Madam Kell was engaged in producing the Wom Bom. When Madam Kell’s forces attacked Wumeng City, the capital of Tristar Hills, in three directions, Soy proposed some stratagem he learned from history book that worked well. When Tristar Hills had no more energy and collapsed, Soy cleverly used his intelligence to help the Tristar Hills. When Longreat found new energy to rebuild Tristar Hills, his army fought their way into the Worm Tribe. At the last moment, Madam Kell resorted to the Wom Bom. However, Soy, who purposely stole into the laboratory, pissed into the Wom Bom and the software worked in disorder. When Madam Kell blew off the Bom, it exploded only to kill all the worms and blew Madam Kell into outer space. Under the help of Soy, Tristar Hills won the war and peace came into being. Then Soy turned back to the human world.

Book excerpt: Something’s happening to the girls on Denton Street. It’s the summer of 1980 in Cleveland, Ohio, and Phoebe Shaw and her best friend Jacqueline have just graduated high school, only to confront an ugly, uncertain future. Across the city, abandoned factories populate the skyline; meanwhile at the shore, one strong spark, and the Cuyahoga River might catch fire. But none of that compares to what’s happening in their own west side neighborhood. The girls Phoebe and Jacqueline have grown up with are changing. It starts with footprints of dark water on the sidewalk. Then, one by one, the girls’ bodies wither away, their fingernails turning to broken glass, and their bones exposed like corroded metal beneath their flesh. As rumors spread about the grotesque transformations, soon everyone from nosy tourists to clinic doctors and government men start arriving on Denton Street, eager to catch sight of “the Rust Maidens” in metamorphosis. But even with all the onlookers, nobody can explain what’s happening or why—except perhaps the Rust Maidens themselves. Whispering in secret, they know more than they’re telling, and Phoebe realizes her former friends are quietly preparing for something that will tear their neighborhood apart. Alternating between past and present, Phoebe struggles to unravel the mystery of the Rust Maidens—and her own unwitting role in the transformations—before she loses everything she’s held dear: her home, her best friend, and even perhaps her own body.
