Book Wounds and Words

Download or read book Wounds and Words written by Christa Schönfelder and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trauma has become a hotly contested topic in literary studies. But interest in trauma is not new; its roots extend to the Romantic period, when novelists and the first psychiatrists influenced each others' investigations of the »wounded mind«. This book looks back to these early attempts to understand trauma, reading a selection of Romantic novels in dialogue with Romantic and contemporary psychiatry. It then carries that dialogue forward to postmodern fiction, examining further how empirical approaches can deepen our theorizations of trauma. Within an interdisciplinary framework, this study reveals fresh insights into the poetics, politics, and ethics of trauma fiction.

Book excerpt: 'For the things that could be that look better than the things that are...' ... Sometimes people leave places and you get left behind with that. Because love can be everything, but never enough, you can be everything, but never enough. ... To remember you now is to deceive the moon that it has the light of its own. So how do I forget you, is utter destruction the only way? ... Busted train stations, crowded streetways, Why do things always feel better when they're worn out? The sweater that's kept in the cupboard for months smells sweeter now that I wear it. Somehow keeping it inside all this time has made it remember you too. It feels warmer now. But perhaps I don't feel that way with you. ... Thank you for not stopping me... For when you didn't stop me, It made me fly... ... A heartfelt story of love, loss and pain, an endless list of questions left unanswered, a flight to self-love and growth - these are the words of my wounds.

Download or read book Words and Wounds written by Sean Akerman and published by Explorations in Narrative Psyc. This book was released on 2019 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of exile, Sean Akerman chronicles the ways in which narrative approaches provide opportunities to understand and represent the lives of those who have been displaced after violence. Drawing on fieldwork he conducted with Tibetan exiles in New York City, and supplemented with archival research from other exiles around the world, Akerman investigates how narrative approaches can reveal what it's like to embody historical tensions, how identity becomes contested within displaced groups, and how personal stories can impact political realities. The book also engages with the ethics of research practices more generally. How does a researcher write in a way that does justice to displaced lives while working within a scientific framework? What sort of ethics are at stake as one spends long hours interviewing an informant, and then interprets that person's stories? The exploration of narrative approaches then becomes a way to imagine new possibilities of representation and call attention to the limitations and power dynamics within the discipline of psychology. In light of massive upheavals and displacements all over the world, Words and Wounds provides a timely consideration of how to understand and chronicle one of the most pressing issues of this age.

Book excerpt: San Francisco Chronicle best-seller. Wounds of Passion is a memoir about writing, love, and sexuality. With her customary boldness and insight, Bell Hooks critically reflects on the impact of birth control and the women's movement on our lives. Resisting the notion that love and writing don't mix, she begins a fifteen-year relationship with a gifted poet and scholar, who inspires and encourages her. Writing the acclaimed book Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism at the age of nineteen, she begins to emerge as a brilliant social critic and public intellectual. Wounds of Passion describes a woman's struggle to devote herself to writing, sharing the difficulties, the triumphs, the pleasures, and the dangers. Eloquent and powerful, this book lets us see the ways one woman writer works to find her own voice while creating a love relationship based on feminist thinking. With courage and wisdom she reveals intimate details and provocative ideas, offering an illuminating vision of a writer's life.

Indeed, it is the fruit of a long haul of research, imagination and logical thought process by which faces, places and events are reoriented to concoct a plausible narrative. Book excerpt: Written by respected authorities in the fields of education and literacy studies, Words: The Foundation of Literacy is a groundbreaking book for teachers, administrators, and education students. Dale and Bonnie Johnson present a fresh, inspiring reminder of why studying language (from word origins to word structure) is such a vital first step in the development of students' vocabulary, literacy, writing skills, and overall ability to learn. At a time when high-stakes testing has squeezed substance from many curricula, Johnson and Johnson provide ways to enhance students' understanding, interest, and appreciation of language and all its subtleties. Words explores how meaning in language is created by the use and interrelationships of words, phrases, and sentences, their denotations, connotations, implications, and ambiguities. From birth, most children exhibit a natural interest in language: its sounds, nuances, and unpredictable qualities. It is important to sustain, stimulate, and recapture that natural interest in the classroom, and Words provides a multitude of creative and practical techniques for doing so.
