Book Wounds Fragments Derelict

Download or read book Wounds Fragments Derelict written by Carlos Gabriel Kelly and published by 2leaf Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wounds Fragments Derelict is Carlos Gabriel Kelly's debut poetry collection. These poems comprise a narrative of love and loss. Throughout the collection, Kelly weaves poetic fragments into a narrative expressing the torment of a relationship that clings to the heart even with the passage of time. As the speaker conjures his world seen through the prism of lost love, ghosts populate a landscape in which heartbreak prevents any possibility of moving forward. In these fragments, romantic, bold, and erotic verse speaks to the heart, its repetitions rattling the bones with carefully composed meter. Kelly also inventively takes advantage of the full page to create non-traditional forms for his poems. With honesty, poignancy, and romantic flair, he distills the most exhilarating highs and heartbreaking lows of life and love into evocative lines that will become etched in the reader's mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for all gaming enthusiasts, this book fuses Latinx studies and video game studies to document how Latinx masculinities are portrayed in high-budget action-adventure video games, inviting Latinxs and others to insert their experiences into games made by an industry that fails to see them. The book employs an intersectional approach through performance theory, border studies, and lived experience to analyze the designed identity “Player Juan.” Player Juan manifests in video game representations through a discourse of criminality that sets expectations of who and what Latinxs can be and do. Developing an original approach to video game experiences, the author theorizes video games as border crossings, and defines a new concept—digital mestizaje—that pushes players, readers, and scholars to deploy a Latinx way of seeing and that calls on researchers to consider a digital object’s constructive as well as destructive qualities.

Book Ruins and Fragments

  • Author : Robert Harbison
  • Publisher : Reaktion Books
  • Release : 2015-08-15
  • ISBN : 1780234767
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Ruins and Fragments written by Robert Harbison and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2015-08-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it about ruins that are so alluring, so puzzling, that they can hold some of us in endless wonder over the half-erased story they tell? In this elegant book, Robert Harbison explores the captivating hold these remains and broken pieces—from architecture, art, and literature—have on us. Why are we, he asks, so suspicious of things that are too smooth, too continuous? What makes us feel, when we look upon a fragment, that its very incompletion has a kind of meaning in itself? Is it that our experience on earth is inherently discontinuous, or that we are simply unable to believe in anything whole? Harbison guides us through ruins and fragments, both ancient and modern, visual and textual, showing us how they are crucial to understanding our current mindset and how we arrived here. First looking at ancient fragments, he examines the ways we have recovered, restored, and exhibited them as artworks. Then he moves on to modernist architecture and the ways that it seeks a fragmentary form, examining modern projects that have been designed into existing ruins, such as the Castelvecchio in Verona, Italy and the reconstruction of the Neues Museum in Berlin. From there he explores literature and the works of T. S. Eliot, Montaigne, Coleridge, Joyce, and Sterne, and how they have used fragments as the foundation for creating new work. Likewise he examines the visual arts, from Schwitters’ collages to Ruskin’s drawings, as well as cinematic works from Sergei Eisenstein to Julien Temple, never shying from more deliberate creators of ruin, from Gordon Matta-Clark to countless graffiti artists. From ancient to modern times and across every imaginable form of art, Harbison takes a poetic look at how ruins have offered us a way of understanding history and how they have enabled us to create the new.

Book Voss Manuscripts Miraaya

Book excerpt: With the threatened publication of 'The Voss Manuscripts', the 'Arms for Iraq' scandals of the 1980's and early 1990's return to haunt the newly-elected Labour Government. Geoffrey Voss, ex-Foreign Office Intelligence Liaison Officer, has decided to recount how he was recruited as an 'alongsider' for the Security Service 'MI5' and how he quickly discovered his mission had been compromised by those inside the establishment with deeply committed commercial interests. His revelations tell how misguided plots to subvert Iraq's ambitions came to destroy his agents placed within and outside the Iraqi procurement network. His efforts to make amends draw him ever deeper into the intrigue and danger surrounding the illicit arms dealing network, and the disappearance of vast sums of Iraq's oil revenues both before and after the 'First' Gulf War. But what or who is MIRAAYA and why does it have such a complete and dreadful hold on Geoffrey Voss; are Voss's revelations all they purport to be?

This is the land of long-forgotten tube stations, burnt-out mansions and gently decaying factories. Welcome to DERELICT LONDON: a realm whose secrets are all around us, visible to anyone who cares to look . . . Paul Talling – our best-loved investigator of London’s underbelly – has spent over fifteen years uncovering the stories of this hidden world. Now, he brings together 100 of his favourite abandoned places from across the capital: many of them more magnificent, more beautiful and more evocative than you can imagine. Covering everything from the overgrown stands of Leyton Stadium to the windswept alleys of the Aylesbury Estate, DERELICT LONDON reveals a side of the city you never knew existed. It will change the way you see London. ______________________________ PRAISE FOR THE DERELICT LONDON PROJECT ‘Fascinating images showing some of London’s eeriest derelict sites show another side to the busy, built-up capital.’ Daily Mail ‘Talling has managed to show another side to the capital, one of abandoned buildings that somehow retain a sense of beauty.’ Metro ‘Excellent . . . As much as it is an inadvertent vision of how London might look after a catastrophe, DERELICT LONDON is valuable as a document of the one going on right in front of us.’ New Statesman ‘From the iconic empty shell of Battersea Power Station to the buried ‘ghost’ stations of the London Underground, the city is peppered with decaying buildings. Paul Talling knows these places better than anyone in the capital.’ Daily Express ‘[London has an] unusual (and deplorable) number of abandoned buildings. Paul Talling’s surprise bestseller, DERELICT LONDON, is their shabby Pevsner.’ Daily Telegraph ______________________________

Book The Emotional Life of Postmodern Film

Download or read book The Emotional Life of Postmodern Film written by Pansy Duncan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotion and Postmodernism: is it possible to imagine an odder couple, stranger bedfellows, less bad company? The Emotional Life of Postmodern Film brings this unlikely pair into sustained dialogue, arguing that the interdisciplinary body of scholarship currently emerging under the rubric of "affect theory" may be unexpectedly enriched by an encounter with the field that has become its critical other. Across a series of radical re-reappraisals of canonical postmodern texts, from Fredric Jameson's Postmodernism to David Cronenberg's Crash, Duncan shows that the same postmodern archive that has proven resistant to strongly subject-based and object-oriented emotions, like anger and sadness, proves all too congenial to a series of idiosyncratic, borderline emotions, from knowingness, fascination and bewilderment to boredom and euphoria. The analysis of these emotions, in turn, promises to shake up scholarly consensus on two key counts. On the one hand, it will restructure our sense of the place and role of emotion in a critical enterprise that has long cast it as the stodgy, subjective sister of a supposedly more critically interesting and politically productive affect. On the other, it will transform our perception of postmodernism as a now-historical aesthetic and theoretical moment, teaching us to acknowledge more explicitly and to name more clearly the emotional life that energizes it.
