A young girl and her family are forced to move to the center of the island for refuge from the rising sea level. Soon the entire village will have to relocate to the mainland. Heartbroken, the young girl and her grandfather worry: what else will be lost when they are forced to abandon their homes and their community? Addressing the topic of climate refugees, My Wounded Island is based on the challenges faced by the Iñupiat people who live on the small islands north of the Bering Strait near the Arctic Circle.

Book The Wounded Body

Download or read book The Wounded Body written by Fabrizio Bondi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-10 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection explores the image of the wound as a ‘cultural symptom’ and a literary-visual trope at the core of representations of a new concept of selfhood in Early Modern Italian and English cultures, as expressed in the two complementary poles of poetry and theatre. The semantic field of the wounded body concerns both the image of the wound as a traumatic event, which leaves a mark on someone’s body and soul (and prompts one to investigate its causes and potential solutions), and the motif of the scar, which draws attention to the fact that time has passed and urges those who look at it to engage in an introspective and analytical process. By studying and describing the transmission of this metaphoric paradigm through the literary tradition, the contributors show how the image of the bodily wound—from Petrarch’s representation of the Self to the overt crisis that affects the heroes and the poetic worlds created by Ariosto and Tasso, Spenser and Shakespeare—could respond to the emergence of Modernity as a new cultural feature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the 1980s near Yakutat, Alaska, Hunter's Paradise: The Homecoming is the story of the Bootans, owners of a sixty-thousand-acre outfitter and ranch, Paradise. Paradise is a land of splendor with virgin forests, lakes, and streams filled with the abundance of wildlife. The head of the family is the tough and hardened but godly man, former Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant John Bootan. He and his business partner, Dan Lupa, are professional hunting guides. They book fly-in clients from the United States and other countries for Alaskan big game hunting and fishing. John's outfitter team includes four nephews, their wives, a niece, and hired help. Whether their story takes you to the war scenes of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, the dangers of big game hunting, or the lost romances of their past, their courage and spirit exemplify the heart of a true American Christian family. In The Homecoming a thirteen-year tribulation continues involving John's oldest nephew Brandon. An emotionally torn veteran, who lost his most precious possessions before his Vietnam trauma: His faith in God, his wife to be, Marcy Lamore, and his dignity as a man. In a desperate search for a meaning and purpose in life, he is fostered by the sage wisdom of his Uncle John and the devoted love of his younger brother Bud. However, Bud's recent marriage to Elaine Petry is a threat to Brandon, fearing that she has taken Bud away from him. In their homecoming to Paradise, a clash between husband and wife, between brother and brother, and between sister-in-law and brother-in-law unfold. To save his family from destruction, Brandon seeks refuge at Little Splendor, land also owned by the Bootans. Months later after leaving Paradise, Brandon learns of a hunting disaster involving Bud and quickly joins his family for a search and rescue. It becomes a long journey back home for the Bootans as they struggle with the natural elements, their fellow man, and ultimately with themselves.

Book Wigwam and War path

Download or read book Wigwam and War path written by Alfred Benjamin Meacham and published by . This book was released on 1875 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From introduction: "The chapter in our National History which tells our dealings with the Indian tribes, from Plymouth to San Francisco, will be one of the darkest and most disgraceful in our annals. Fraud and oppression, hypocrisy and violence, open, high handed robbery and sly cheating, the swindling agent and the brutal soldier turned into a brigand, buying promotion by pandering to the hate and fears of the settlers, avarice and indifference to human life, and lust for territory, all play their parts in the drama. Except the Negro, no race will lift up, at the judgement seat, such accusing hands against this nation as the Indian."

Book excerpt: It was huge, a ferocious carnivore capable of catching deer and elk with its long trunk and crushing them in its giant grinders. It lived right there in the Hudson River Valley. And no place else in the world had anything to match it. Such were the thoughts about the first complete mastodon skeleton excavated in 1801, before dinosaurs were discovered and the notion of geologic time acquired currency. Oregon- based natural historian Semonin traces the evangelical beliefs, Englightenment thought, and Indian myths about the extinct creatures from 1705 through US independence.
