Book excerpt: Growing up, Ward Adamson was a typical young man: striving to date the cutest girl in school, advancing in his studies, and participating in his youth group. Although his dream had always been ordination as a pastor, Ward never forgot what his history teacher had told him: ¿you should think about politics¿you could do something to help a change.¿ Years later, as a successful pastor at an ever-expanding parish, with a loving wife and grown children, he is content in his duties and life as the Reverend Ward Adamson. At the same time, he has closely watched as the American political system has changed. With more stringent rules regarding campaigning, and the elimination of the party system, anyone with passion can be president. And that¿s when his friend Dennis comes to speak to him regarding a new opportunity... Will Ward give up his current congregation for a national following? What does a pastor, acting as president, have to offer a nation?

So why does it all feel so empty and pointless? It isn’t until he meets a curvy caterer that he realizes exactly what he’s been missing. Lila Johnstone is living her dream. Starting a high-end catering business in the big city, she’s elated to land her first real client. But the millionaire businessman seems intent on mixing business with pleasure. When Alex’s fiancée learns about his interest in the caterer, she sets him up, then sets out to smear him in the press, causing Lila to lose her business before it even gets off the ground. And that’s not the only obstacle, as Lila’s ex reappears to remind her of her bitter past, and another caterer tries to persuade her to partner up, and not just as business partners. But Alex is determined to make Lila realize that he’ll give up everything to prove himself to her. Will she give him another chance at her heart? These are stand-alone stories that can be read as such. Enjoy the HEA! Every good girl deserves a bad boy. ~ Weston

Book What Is Life Worth

Download or read book What Is Life Worth written by Kenneth R. Feinberg and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2006-08-29 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon to be a major motion picture: the true story of the man put in charge of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, and a testament to the enduring power of family, grief, love, fear, frustration, and courage. Just days after September 11, 2001, Kenneth Feinberg was appointed to administer the federal 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, a unique, unprecedented fund established by Congress to compensate families who lost a loved one on 9/11 and survivors who were physically injured in the attacks. Those who participated in the Fund were required to waive their right to sue the airlines involved in the attacks, as well as other potentially responsible entities. When the program was launched, many families criticized it as a brazen, tight-fisted attempt to protect the airlines from lawsuits. The Fund was also attacked as attempting to put insulting dollar values on the lives of lost loved ones. The families were in pain. And they were angry. Over the course of the next three years, Feinberg spent almost all of his time meeting with the families, convincing them of the generosity and compassion of the program, and calculating appropriate awards for each and every claim. The Fund proved to be a dramatic success with over 97% of eligible families participating. It also provided important lessons for Feinberg, who became the filter, the arbitrator, and the target of family suffering. Feinberg learned about the enduring power of family grief, love, fear, faith, frustration, and courage. Most importantly, he learned that no check, no matter how large, could make the families and victims of 9/11 whole again.

Book The Worth of Water

Download or read book The Worth of Water written by Gary White and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the founders of nonprofits Water.org & WaterEquity Gary White and Matt Damon, the incredible true story of two unlikely allies on a mission to end the global water crisis for good On any given morning, you might wake up and shower with water, make your coffee with water, flush your toilet with water—and think nothing of it. But around the world, more than three-quarters of a billion people can’t do any of that—because they have no clean water source near their homes. And 1.7 billion don’t have access to a toilet. This crisis affects a third of the people on the planet. It keeps kids out of school and women out of work. It traps people in extreme poverty. It spreads disease. It’s also solvable. That conviction is what brought together movie actor Matt Damon and water expert and engineer Gary White. They spent years getting the answer wrong, then halfway right, then almost right. Over time, they and their organization, Water.org, have found an approach that works. Working with partners across East Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, they’ve helped over 40 million people access water and/or sanitation. In The Worth of Water, Gary and Matt take us along on the journey—telling stories as they uncover insights, try out new ideas, and travel between the communities they serve and the halls of power where decisions get made. With humor and humility, they illuminate the challenges of launching a brand-new model with extremely high stakes: better health and greater prosperity for people allover the world. The Worth of Water invites us to become a part of this effort—to match hope with resources, to empower families and communities, and to end the global water crisis for good. All the authors’ proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to Water.org.

Book Your Network Is Your Net Worth

Download or read book Your Network Is Your Net Worth written by Porter Gale and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-06-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An internationally known public speaker, entrepreneur, and marketing executive shares practical, up-to-date tips for mastering the skills of networking. Networking doesn’t have to be that frenzied old-school game of calendars packed with stuffy power lunches and sterile evenings at community business gatherings. We’ve entered a new era, one in which shifting cultural values and the explosion of digital technology enable us to network in vastly more efficient, more focused, and more enjoyable ways. A fresh take on How to Win Friends and Influence People, Your Network Is Your Net Worth is an entertaining, straightforward guide filled with revealing case studies, hands-on advice, and innovative strategies for building your network. Written by sought-after speaker, entrepreneur, and marketing executive Porter Gale, with a foreword by Apple evangelist and bestselling author Guy Kawasaki, this book shows you how to establish, expand, and nurture your connections both online and off. New ways to network are popping up every day—and Gale tells you how to make the most of them—but even traditional networking opportunities are not the same animals that they once were, and we need to shift our attitudes and approaches accordingly. Networking has evolved from a transactional game to a transformational process. Whereas once it was about power plays, now it’s about charting your own course, following your passions, and making meaningful connections, which in turn increase your happiness and productivity. In addition to chronicling her own rise from an ad agency intern to an in-demand consultant, Gale also shares the inspiring stories of so many others who live by this networking model: a military wife who connects with social media communities while her husband is deployed overseas, a young woman blog-ger battling leukemia, a dyslexic politician who wins elections by telling stories, and the CEO of a Major League Baseball team who once made a phone call that changed the course of his life. When you focus on your passions and reorganize your networking around your values and beliefs, you will discover the kind of lasting relationships, personal transformation, and, ultimately, tangible wealth that are the foundation for happiness and success. With a message both timely and important, Your Network Is Your Net Worth is the definitive handbook to Networking 2.0.
