Book The Quest for the Trinity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen R. Holmes
  • Publisher : InterVarsity Press
  • Release : 2012-11-03
  • ISBN : 0830866566
  • Pages : 251 pages

Download or read book The Quest for the Trinity written by Stephen R. Holmes and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2012-11-03 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of the Trinity was settled in the fourth century, and maintained, with only very minor disagreement or development, by all strands of the church--Western and Eastern, Protestant and Catholic--until the modern period. In the twentieth century, there arose a sense that the doctrine had been neglected and stood in need of recovery. In The Quest for the Trinity, Holmes takes us on a remarkable journey through 2,000 years of the Christian doctrine of God. We witness the church s discovery of the Trinity from the biblical testimony, its crucial patristic developments, and medieval and Reformation continuity. We are also confronted with the questioning of traditional dogma during the Enlightenment, and asked to consider anew the character of the modern Trinitarian revival. Holmes s controversial conclusion is that the explosion of theological work in recent decades claiming to recapture the heart of Christian theology in fact deeply misunderstands and misappropriates the traditional doctrine of the Trinity. Yet his aim is constructive: to grasp the wisdom of the past and, ultimately, to bring a clearer understanding of the meaning of the present.

Book The Ultimate Quest

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jordan Haynie Ware
  • Publisher : Church Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2017-02
  • ISBN : 0819233250
  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book The Ultimate Quest written by Jordan Haynie Ware and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-02 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tongue-in-cheek introduction by Episcopal priest and certified geek J. M. H. Ware uses an “it’s geek to me” approach to translate Episcopal theological concepts and rich church traditions into geek language, accompanied by comics that help the reader maneuver through the oft-dense liturgical and theological workings of the Christian tradition. A tool to evangelize and attract young people to church, it is useful for both those who have recently discovered The Episcopal Church and cradle Episcopalians who have always know there was magic here, helping them to deepen understanding of their faith and relate it to elements of their everyday life. It will also assist them in explaining their faith to friends, who may be even less familiar with Episcopal traditions than they are. This book endeavors to, as Rachel Held Evans has said, “creatively re-articulate the significance of the traditional teachings and sacraments of the church in a modern context” – specifically, in the geek context that is similar to, but more widely known, than church culture. All nerds are welcome on this wild adventure through the Episcopal jungle: Begin the quest by diving into the Player’s Handbook – otherwise known as the Book of Common Prayer. Discover the symbolism of every piece of equipment and vestment used during the service. Embrace the wonders of the Episcopal Disneyland we call General Convention. And embark on the adventure path that we call the Holy Eucharist. Ware’s light and funny style make the impenetrable mysteries of theology, liturgy, and church history accessible for all, from fans of Star Wars to fans of Star Trek. Her church geekery is matched only by the depth of her knowledge of nerd culture. We solemnly swear that you will make your next Knowledge (religion) check!

Book excerpt: Worship Formation provides a thoughtful perspective on Christian worship and addresses how each element within a worship service spiritually forms the worshiper. Brooks challenges the reader toward an understanding that worshiping through music, prayer, Scripture reading, Communion, sermon, stillness, giving, and baptism engages the worshiper in spiritual formation. Worship Formation encourages the worshiper to not just go through the motions when they gather for worship, but to realize that they are being formed through each element of worship, and challenges those in leadership to be thoughtful in their approach to planning and leading worship services.

Book Mystics and Scholars

    Book Details:
  • Author : Harold Coward
  • Publisher : Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
  • Release : 1977-03
  • ISBN : 091981204X
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Mystics and Scholars written by Harold Coward and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1977-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September of 1976 a group of some fifty scholars and practising mystics gathered at the University of Calgary. The chief objective of the Conference was to ponder and assess the nature of mysticism in its Eastern, Western and North American Indian forms. The method the Conference followed was somewhat unusual in that it aimed at a dialogue between the practising mystics and the scholars. What this book presents to the reader is not the outcome of the dialogue, but the personal statements and papers from which the dialogue began. Of course there is a degree to which the dialogue is already present, in that the papers of the scholars were written with the statements of the mystics in hand. Among some of the philosophers present, a set of more formal comments on each others presentations was recorded and these have been included.
