Of the 16 million service members who fought in that war, it is estimated that only 855,000 are still alive today. What's more, those survivors are dying off at a rate of almost 500 each day. The rush is on to capture as many of their stories as possible, while some of them are still with us. In Our Service, Our Stories, 36 veterans from Indiana recall their experiences of military service during World War II - what they saw, heard, said, felt and did. And how they got on with their lives after the war. This is their service. These are their stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engaging and meticulously researched history of Texas Populism and its contributions to modern American liberalism In the years after the Civil War, the banks, railroads, and industrial corporations of Gilded-Age America, abetted by a corrupt political system, concentrated vast wealth in the hands of the few and made poverty the fate of many. In response, a group of hard-pressed farmers and laborers from Texas organized a movement for economic justice called the Texas People's Party--the original Populists. Arguing that these Texas Populists were among the first to elaborate the set of ideas that would eventually become known as modern liberalism, Gregg Cantrell shows how the group broke new ground in reaching out to African Americans and Mexican Americans, rethinking traditional gender roles, and demanding creative solutions and forceful government intervention to solve economic inequality. Although their political movement ultimately failed, this volume reveals how the ideas of the Texas People's Party have shaped American political history.

The Germans fired those V-1 bombs from a launching pad in France . . . It wasnt as scary hearing the bombs as it was when you stopped hearing them because when the sound stopped you knew they were coming down . . . . LB. . . . I was floating down, parachute open. I dont recall opening the chute. The Lord was there and saw that that happened . . . As I was floating down, I saw pieces of the plane floating down around me like leaves . . . . H.B. They marched us through Manila to make a big show for the benefit of the Filipinos. They took us to Bilibid Prison . . . During the three weeks I was there we were fed no food except rice, which was cooked in big iron pots . . . Twice a day we each received one-half of a canteen of rice. R.C. The Colonel told me, If you go with me, I guarantee you will be First Sergeant by the time we get to Washington. I said, Colonel, I wouldnt go with you if you told me I would be a Colonel when we got there. Im going back to home to Georgia. .H.O. These are the stories of the men and women of World War II. Each person brought unique perspective to our collection. Some enlisted in the military service before finishing high school. Others came after college. A few rose through the ranks to take their place among the commanding officers. Mostly, though, they came to do a job, they did it, and went back home as the had come quietly and humbly. Their experiences were as varied as their backgrounds. We hope that the stories will inspire our readers to say thanks to a generation that gave so much in the cause of freedom.

Book War Monuments Museums and Library Collections of 20th Century Conflicts

Download or read book War Monuments Museums and Library Collections of 20th Century Conflicts written by Steve Rajtar and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique state-by-state directory covers monuments, memorials, museums, markers, statues and library collections that relate to the veterans, weapons, vehicles, airplanes, victims or any other aspect of war in which the United States participated. While a site may have been created before 1900 (such as a fort), there must be some operational or historical tie to a twentieth century conflict to be included here. General collections, such as museums of aviation, are included if they house materials related to a twentieth century conflict. The coverage is so thorough that statues honoring veterans of the Civil War appear if veterans of later wars are on their rosters of honorees. Another example of the comprehensiveness of this compilation is in the inclusion of memorials to victims of war such as the Holocaust Museum in Houston, Texas. For each site, the following information is given: street address, phone number, website and email address (if applicable), days and hours of operation, admission fees, other necessary information, and a brief description of the site.

Download or read book The Veterans of World War II at Indiana University 1944 1951 written by David Roland Warriner and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The precipitous demobilization of the military from 12,123,455 in the armed services on June 30, 1945, to only 3,030,088 on June 30, 1946 released a large number of veterans who took advantage of the educational provisions of the G.I. Bill. Indiana University in the postwar period was more than double its prewar size ... To understand what happened at Indiana University from 1945 to 1951, one must understand the impact of veterans on the institution"--P. 95-96.
