Book A Practical Guide to Trade Policy Analysis

Download or read book A Practical Guide to Trade Policy Analysis written by Marc Bacchetta and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade flows and trade policies need to be properly quantified to describe, compare, or follow the evolution of policies between sectors or countries or over time. This is essential to ensure that policy choices are made with an appropriate knowledge of the real conditions. This practical guide introduces the main techniques of trade and trade policy data analysis. It shows how to develop the main indexes used to analyze trade flows, tariff structures, and non-tariff measures. It presents the databases needed to construct these indexes as well as the challenges faced in collecting and processing these data, such as measurement errors or aggregation bias. Written by experts with practical experience in the field, A Practical Guide to Trade Policy Analysis has been developed to contribute to enhance developing countries' capacity to analyze and implement trade policy. It offers a hands-on introduction on how to estimate the distributional effects of trade policies on welfare, in particular on inequality and poverty. The guide is aimed at government experts engaged in trade negotiations, as well as students and researchers involved in trade-related study or research. An accompanying DVD contains data sets and program command files required for the exercises. Copublished by the WTO and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development

Book U S Trade Policy and Global Growth

Download or read book U S Trade Policy and Global Growth written by Robert A. Blecker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1996 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays offers critical perspectives on current issues in the international economy. Divided into four parts, U.S. Trade Policy and Global Growth discusses managed trade and international interdependence, the effect of trade on domestic wages and employment, the costs and benefits of trade protection, and likely effects of NAFTA. The collection also addresses the U.S. trade deficit and presents a Keynesian proposal for international monetary reform. Part IV focuses on issues facing developing countries in the areas of trade, industrial, and financial policy. Rejecting the dogma that pure free-market policies should be accepted as articles of religious faith, in either international trade or domestic policy, the contributors search for trade and macro policies that can achieve balanced growth with high employment and an equitable distribution of income in both the United States and the rest of the world.

Book Domestic Adjustments to Globalization

Download or read book Domestic Adjustments to Globalization written by Morrison, Charles E. and published by . This book was released on 1998-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges of globalization have taken on a new urgency in light of the profound effect of the Asian financial crisis on regional stability. The region and the entire world must review both the positive and negative impact of globalization as national societies attempt to make needed adjustments without undue dislocation and economic pain. This compilation of nine country surveys completed on the eve of the Asian crisis puts these fast-moving, contemporary developments into perspective. The Asian financial crisis has intensified debate on globalization issues and has resulted in a backlash against globalizing forces in the most affected countries. The crisis has tested many ideas and institutions associated with globalization. This volume focuses on three dimensions of those tests: economic strategies, governance, and leadership.

Book Failure to Adjust

Download or read book Failure to Adjust written by Edward Alden and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Updated edition with a new foreword on the Trump administration's trade policy* The vast benefits promised by the supporters of globalization, and by their own government, have never materialized for many Americans. In Failure to Adjust Edward Alden provides a compelling history of the last four decades of US economic and trade policies that have left too many Americans unable to adapt to or compete in the current global marketplace. He tells the story of what went wrong and how to correct the course. Originally published on the eve of the 2016 presidential election, Alden’s book captured the zeitgeist that would propel Donald J. Trump to the presidency. In a new introduction to the paperback edition, Alden addresses the economic challenges now facing the Trump administration, and warns that economic disruption will continue to be among the most pressing issues facing the United States. If the failure to adjust continues, Alden predicts, the political disruptions of the future will be larger still.

Book Terms of Trade Cycles and External Adjustment

Download or read book Terms of Trade Cycles and External Adjustment written by Gustavo Adler and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the process of external adjustment to large terms-of-trade level shifts—identified with a Markov-switching approach—for a large set of countries during the period 1960–2015. We find that adjustment to these shocks is relatively fast. Current accounts experience, on average, a contemporaneous variation of only about 1⁄2 of the magnitude of the price shock—indicating a significant volume offset—and a full adjustment within 3–4 years. Dynamics are largely symmetric for terms-of-trade booms and busts, as well as for advanced and emerging market economies. External adjustment is driven primarily by offsetting shifts in domestic demand, as opposed to variations in output (also reflected in the response of import rather than export volumes), indicating a strong income channel at play. Exchange rate flexibility appears to have played an important buffering role during booms, but less so during busts; while international reserve holdings have been a key tool for smoothing the adjustment process.

Book Structural Adjustment Global Trade and the New Political Economy of Development

Download or read book Structural Adjustment Global Trade and the New Political Economy of Development written by Biplab Dasgupta and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changes in the global economy are so profound, this book argues, that the world is now confronted with nothing less - in both institutional and policy terms - than a new political economy of development. The author provides an intellectually commanding survey of this new terrain. He subjects its economic and ideological assumptions to trenchant critique and shows how the rules of the game primarily reflect the interests of the rich and powerful countries of the North. He also surveys the economic performance of the various regions of the South and explores the real reasons for the success of certain Asian economies (reasons which run counter to so many of the policy prescriptions laid down by the West for the rest of the South).
