Book How to Fly a Horse

Download or read book How to Fly a Horse written by Kevin Ashton and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a technology pioneer at MIT and as the leader of three successful start-ups, Kevin Ashton experienced firsthand the all-consuming challenge of creating something new. Now, in a tour-de-force narrative twenty years in the making, Ashton leads us on a journey through humanity’s greatest creations to uncover the surprising truth behind who creates and how they do it. From the crystallographer’s laboratory where the secrets of DNA were first revealed by a long forgotten woman, to the electromagnetic chamber where the stealth bomber was born on a twenty-five-cent bet, to the Ohio bicycle shop where the Wright brothers set out to “fly a horse,” Ashton showcases the seemingly unremarkable individuals, gradual steps, multiple failures, and countless ordinary and usually uncredited acts that lead to our most astounding breakthroughs. Creators, he shows, apply in particular ways the everyday, ordinary thinking of which we are all capable, taking thousands of small steps and working in an endless loop of problem and solution. He examines why innovators meet resistance and how they overcome it, why most organizations stifle creative people, and how the most creative organizations work. Drawing on examples from art, science, business, and invention, from Mozart to the Muppets, Archimedes to Apple, Kandinsky to a can of Coke, How to Fly a Horse is a passionate and immensely rewarding exploration of how “new” comes to be.

Download or read book My Dog Is As Smelly As Dirty Socks written by Hanoch Piven and published by Schwartz & Wade. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you draw your smelly dog? Your playful daddy? Your yummy mommy? See how one girl does it in this simple, clever picture book that's comprised of family portraits made out of objects. For example, her baby brother is so noisy—he's as loud as a whistle, a horn, and even a fire truck!—that she creates a picture of him with whistles for eyes, a horn mouth, and holding a fire truck. After the girl has described everyone in her family (including herself, in great detail), she asks, "What does your special family look like?" encouraging readers to create their own portraits. With a list of objects at the end of the book to use as a guide, this is the ideal choice for budding artists everywhere. Here's a wonderful exploration of simile and metaphor for young readers. And don't miss the companion book My Best Friend is as Sharp as a Pencil!

Book Dog Dad

Download or read book Dog Dad written by Topher Brophy and published by Vertel Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-18 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topher Brophy will be donating all of his proceeds from the sale of Dog Dad to American Humane. Can dogs make us better humans? Can animal companionship really heal the world? In telling Topher Brophy's story, Dog Dad shows us emphatically that the answer to both questions is yes. Is there a cure for the "sad sickness? That's what Topher Brophy calls the feeling he has lived with as long as he can remember. As a lonely only child "on the spectrum," a shy high schooler cursed by acne, a college student working hard to be accepted as a "frat boy," and a young man traveling to exotic destinations in search of wisdom and inner peace, Topher never feels he belongs anywhere or to anything. Too shy to keep a friendship, he battles feelings of rejection and loneliness, always wondering why just living in the world, which seems easy for others, is so difficult for him. He tries various remedies, even becomes a sports freak in the hope that being strong will make him happy and get him "accepted." With barbells, ropes, bands, he works out morning till night to keep the sad sickness at bay—till an injury makes even that impossible. Nothing changes anything. The sad sickness is always there. Then Rosenberg comes into his life. Dog Dad tells how becoming a dog dad changes everything for Topher Brophy. How the companionship and love he receives from his shaggy puppy beget the companionship and love he can now give... and how that makes him feel, for the first time in his life, like he belongs in the world as it is. How Rosenberg connects him to a community of dog people and introduces him to a special person, the Dog Styler. How together, they create an Instagram sensation and a family—and dedicate both to the higher purpose of healing the world. This is no shaggy dog story. It really happened to Topher Brophy, and it can really happen to anyone.

Book The Death of My Father the Pope

Download or read book The Death of My Father the Pope written by Obed Silva and published by MCD. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A man mourning his alcoholic father faces a paradox: to pay tribute, lay scorn upon, or pour a drink. A wrenching, dazzling, revelatory debut Weaving between the preparations for his father's funeral and memories of life on both sides of the U.S.–Mexico border, Obed Silva chronicles his father's lifelong battle with alcoholism and the havoc it wreaked on his family. Silva and his mother had come north across the border to escape his father’s violent, drunken rages. His father had followed and danced dangerously in and out of the family’s life until he was arrested and deported back to Mexico, where he drank himself to death, one Carta Blanca at a time, at the age of forty-eight. Told with a wry cynicism, a profane, profound anger, an antic, brutally honest voice, and a hard-won classical frame of reference, Silva channels the heartbreak of mourning while wrestling with the resentment and frustration caused by addiction. The Death of My Father the Pope is a fluid and dynamic combination of memoir and an examination of the power of language—and the introduction of a unique and powerful literary voice.

Book Hands of My Father

Download or read book Hands of My Father written by Myron Uhlberg and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2009-02-03 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By turns heart-tugging and hilarious, Myron Uhlberg’s memoir tells the story of growing up as the hearing son of deaf parents—and his life in a world that he found unaccountably beautiful, even as he longed to escape it. “Does sound have rhythm?” my father asked. “Does it rise and fall like the ocean? Does it come and go like the wind?” Such were the kinds of questions that Myron Uhlberg’s deaf father asked him from earliest childhood, in his eternal quest to decipher, and to understand, the elusive nature of sound. Quite a challenge for a young boy, and one of many he would face. Uhlberg’s first language was American Sign Language, the first sign he learned: “I love you.” But his second language was spoken English—and no sooner did he learn it than he was called upon to act as his father’s ears and mouth in the stores and streets of the neighborhood beyond their silent apartment in Brooklyn. Resentful as he sometimes was of the heavy burdens heaped on his small shoulders, he nonetheless adored his parents, who passed on to him their own passionate engagement with life. These two remarkable people married and had children at the absolute bottom of the Great Depression—an expression of extraordinary optimism, and typical of the joy and resilience they were able to summon at even the darkest of times. From the beaches of Coney Island to Ebbets Field, where he watches his father’s hero Jackie Robinson play ball, from the branch library above the local Chinese restaurant where the odor of chow mein rose from the pages of the books he devoured to the hospital ward where he visits his polio-afflicted friend, this is a memoir filled with stories about growing up not just as the child of two deaf people but as a book-loving, mischief-making, tree-climbing kid during the remarkably eventful period that spanned the Depression, the War, and the early fifties. From the Hardcover edition.

Book The Building of America

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peggy Waites Todd "Daddy's Girl"
  • Publisher : Covenant Books, Inc.
  • Release : 2022-02-23
  • ISBN : 1638148279
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book The Building of America written by Peggy Waites Todd "Daddy's Girl" and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-02-23 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As you start reading this book, you will see very quickly that the sun rose and sat in my daddy’s love for me and why he always referred to me as “Daddy’s Girl.” I was one of five children—four girls and one boy. Daddy and I always had a special connection and unconditional love for each other. He was the one I ran to when something was wrong, or I had a problem. I can honestly say that I never brought any pain or embarassment to either my daddy or mother. When they needed me, I was there without complaint. I am immensely proud of the woman I became because of the way they raised me. Being a strong and determined person, I accomplished anything that I set out to do. My daddy trusted me with everything he had in the world. From the time I graduated business college at the age of eighteen, he always wanted me to take care of his books. I did this until the day he passed from this world. Daddy trusted me to drive our car when we were traveling from California to Grandma’s house in Louisana every Christmas. Daddy could go to sleep while I was driving and not worry that I would run the car off in the ditch or have a wreck. I guess that’s what led me to become a cross-country truck driver for thirteen years. I have always been a dependable person—my word is my bond, and I always put God first in my life and never met a stranger. Our home is a no-need-to-call-prior-to-coming to visit us. It has an open door to anyone, as was my parents home. I believe that even though they are both gone now, they are still looking down on me with pride.

From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense—his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions. Cesar’s formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking readers through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected. You'll learn: • What your dog really needs may not be what you’re giving him • Why a dog’s natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship • How to relate to your dog on a canine level • There are no “problem breeds,” just problem owners • How to choose a dog who’s right for you and your family • The difference between discipline and punishment • And much more! Filled with fascinating anecdotes about Cesar’s longtime clients, and including forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and Jada Pinkett Smith, this is the only book you’ll need to forge a stronger, more rewarding connection with your four-legged companion.

Book Emails from the Farm

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael A. Monagan
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2014-02-20
  • ISBN : 1493169963
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Emails from the Farm written by Michael A. Monagan and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-02-20 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years, I have often wondered what my pets and livestock would write if they could. The stories that follow come from a host of animals with some stories from my viewpoint. I started writing stories to share with my friends. Then these friends asked that I consider getting them published so that other people could have some joy in their lives. Seeing as the Bible said laughter is like good medicine, I decided to compile some stories and write more. Some of the people who answer the e-mails are real people, and some of the answers from them are from me so that I can keep a story going or try to keep it clearer or funny. One last disclaimer: no farm animals were hurt writing these stories, but some chickens did lose feathers and had their serenity disturbed.
