Book World Power and Evolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book World Power and Evolution Classic Reprint written by Ellsworth Huntington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from World-Power and Evolution Some readers may feel that the importance of environment is exaggerated in this book. That will be largely because they do not attach as much weight as does the author to the qualifying phrases which he has used. A few generations ago the emphasis was all upon the various agencies which combine to furnish train ing. In a broad sense these include the Church, the Home, the School, the State, and other institutions. Recently tremendous emphasis has justly been given to another factor, namely, heredity. We are told that heredity plays nine parts and training one in determining what a man's character shall be. According to such an extreme view physical environment is scarcely worthy of mention. Yet training, heredity, and physical environment are like food, drink, and air. One or another of these may be placed first according to the individual preferences, and one or another may demand more attention according to circumstances. It is idle, however, to say that one is any more important than the others. All are essential. Until the world learns this vital lesson, it will be necessary that some students should lay special stress upon heredity because its importance is not as yet so fully recognized as is that of training. Other students must lay still greater stress upon physical environment because its importance is still less appreciated. When the world realizes that the human race must be bred as carefully as race horses, and that even when people inherit perfect constitutions their health must receive as much care as does that of consumptives, it will be time for a book in which training, heredity, and environment receive exactly equal emphasis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping new account of the role of power in the evolution of all life on Earth Power has many dimensions, from individual attributes such as strength and speed to the collective advantages of groups. The Evolution of Power takes readers on a breathtaking journey across history and the natural world, revealing how the concept of power unifies a vast range of phenomena in the evolution of life—and how natural selection has placed humanity and the planet itself on a trajectory of ever-increasing power. Drawing on evidence from fossils, living organisms, and contemporary society, Geerat Vermeij documents increases in power at all scales, from body size, locomotor performance, and the use of force in competition to efficiency in production and consumption within ecosystems. He shows how power—which he defines as the rate at which organisms acquire and apply energy—is tied to the emergence of cooperation, and how the modern economy, which for the first time has established a monopoly over the biosphere by a single species, is a continuation of evolutionary trends stretching back to the dawn of life. Vermeij persuasively argues that we can find solutions to the many problems arising from this extreme concentration of power by broadening our exclusively human-centered perspective. A masterful work by one of today’s most innovative and forward-thinking naturalists, The Evolution of Power offers a new understanding of our place in the grand sweep of evolutionary history.

Book World Power and Evolution

Download or read book World Power and Evolution written by Ellsworth Huntington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from World-Power and Evolution Every important aspect of human knowledge must be considered in its relation to both space and time. In "Civilization and Climate" the problem of the effect of physical environment upon human progress was discussed in its relation to space. It was shown that the distribution of civilization upon the earth's surface is closely in harmony with the distribution of climatic energy, which appears to be the most important factor in physical environment. In the present volume the same problem is considered in its relation to time. Beginning with the present day we find that from year to year business activities vary in extraordinary harmony with health. Further study shows that variations in health from year to year depend upon the weather far more than upon any other single factor. Turning to the distant past we find that from the earliest geological times the evolution of man's ancestors, even before they had assumed the form of man, was largely guided by climatic environment. This was especially true of mental evolution. Periods of climatic stress not merely weeded out old types, but apparently caused new types or mutants to arise, so that new species and races came into existence. In historical times the same extraordinarily close relationship between the air that men breathe and the deeds that they do is apparent. Rome furnishes a striking example. Turkey is today one of the world's most puzzling problems partly because of the economic, physiological, and political conditions arising from the uninvigorating climate and the arid summers. The civilization which he has produced is the strangest flower in the fields of time. He has introduced into it at every point the spirit of the unmeasured ages of conquest out of which it has come. Into all the institutions which he has created he has carried the spirit of war, and the belief in force as the ultimate principle of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution: A General Sketch From Nebula to Man The dimensions of this little Work will sufficiently prepare the reader to appreciate its scope. It gives no more than the broad outlines of the evolution of the earth and its inhabitants. From the great volume which a score of sciences have co-operated in writing on that absorbing subject it selects only the pages that are most interesting and intelligible to the general reader. These pages it joins into a continuous story, which opens with the mighty cloud of matter that was stirred into giving birth to our sun and its planets, and ends with some attempt to forecast their fate in millions of years to come. In so brief an account of so long a story only slight reference can be made to the controversies that divide modern students of evolution in regard to the agencies at work. The aim is chie y to present a panoramic view of the development of the world - especially the world that lies close about us - by a conscientious use of the results of many sciences, and aided by a personal acquaintance during many years with both telescope and microscope. But disputed points will be left open, conjecture plainly stated as conjecture, and the latest theories of importance indicated; so that the reader may be at least slightly informed on the systems Weismannism, Mendelism, etc. - that now occur in all he may read further on the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World of Life: A Manifestation of Creative Power, Directive Mind and Ultimate Purpose IN the present volume I have attempted to summarise and complete my half-century of thought and work on the Darwinian theory of evolution. In several directions I have extended the scope and application of the theory, and have shown that it is capable Of explaining many of the phenomena Of living things hitherto thought to be beyond its range. Among these are the detailed distribution of plants and animals, which I have discussed at some length. It occupies about one-fourth Of the volume (chapters II. To and brings out certain facts and conclusions which I believe will be Of interest to all plant-lovers, and also be not without a certain value to botanists. Next in importance are three chapters (x., XI and XII.) devoted to a general review of the Geological Record and a discussion of the various problems arising out Of it. Some of the conclusions to which this examination leads us are, I believe, both important and Of much general interest. Book Missions and World Movements Classic Reprint

Download or read book Missions and World Movements Classic Reprint written by Bishop Charles H. Fowler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missions and World Movements Latest evolutionists hold that natural se lection is under this law. There has always been one end in view up through all animal increments to the perfected physical, up into the intellectual, and up, by the same law of selection, to the spiritual. From the first speck of mist in the universe on through the inconceivable lapses of duration there has been a steady trend toward the perfect man. This ideal of evolution Christianity has realized in the man of Nazareth. There is that in things that makes for righteous ness. My faith does not faint or weary in this long ascent. This only gives me a good start into an endless future. The Supreme Power who has worked and watched so long will not now sleep nor forget me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution, Vol. 1 Evolution The word is in every mouth. A vague, Often an incorrect conception Of its meaning in the field of biology and with reference to the origin of Man, has reached the popular mind, and stirred it to further investigation and inquiry. Even in its biological aspects, the doctrine of Evolution is seen to touch the great problems of religion and philosophy of origin and destiny. But it is beginning to be understood that not alone as an explana tion of the method whereby living forms have been produced and developed is this doctrine alive with human interest and pregnant with important influences upon human thought and human wel fare. Evolution, reaching backward, takes hold upon the great cosmic problems of the birth and growth of worlds, the nature of Matter and Spirit, the relation Of the phenomenal Universe to its efficient Cause. Reaching forward, it touches and illuminates the pressing problems of ethics and sociology, Offering to the careful student wise instruction for his guidance in all the practical affairs Of life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Evolution: With Special Reference to the Evidence Upon Which It Is Founded A new book on evolution, which can lay little claim to novelty of fact or treatment, certainly demands an explanation, if not an apology. My choice of subject for the Westbrook lectures Of 1914 was determined by the very general misapprehension in the public mind concerning the present status Of the evolutionary theory among men Of science. It is widely believed that the theory is an outworn device, which naturalists are beginning to discard and that soon it will have a merely historical in terest. This misunderstanding, for such it is, has arisen from the debates among zoologists and botan ists as to the manner in which evolution has actually occurred and the efficient causes which have brought it about, and, further, from the ambiguous way in which the term Darwinism is Often employed. Frequently, the term is made a synonym of evolu tion, but it ought properly to be restricted to Dar win's explanation Of evolution by natural selection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Outer Rim: Studies in Wider Evolution The story of evolution, as being now brought out by diffetent scientific investigators day after day, shows the romance that is contained in truth, even more than in fiction. The development of man from the lower ani mals, so clearly proven by Darwin a quarter of a century ago, was by the orthodox church people first ridiculed and denied, then ignored, and finally in our own time is acknowledged. The preacher Who now attacks evolu tion is the recipient of the same degree of ridicule Which once was bestowed upon its advocates, and proves him self an ignoramus.
