Book The Collegiate Percussion Ensemble

Download or read book The Collegiate Percussion Ensemble written by Haley Jo Nutt and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation provides a comprehensive history of the American collegiate percussion ensemble and assesses how institutional and gendered practices have influenced the size, style, and aesthetic of the genre's repertoire in educational institutions. It identifies four stylistic periods-1950 to 1980, 1980 to 2000, 2000 to 2015, and 2015 to the present day-and details the efforts of Paul Price, Richard Gipson, Brian West, and Julie Hill, all educational entrepreneurs who implemented changes that affected the collegiate percussion ensemble at different points in its history. More specifically, this project encapsulates my investigation of the formation, development, and contemporary status of the percussion orchestra (PO), which I argue is the first commoditized brand within the collegiate percussion ensemble realm. First popularized by Richard Gipson and the University of Oklahoma percussion program in the early 1980s, this tonal, symphonic, and virtuosic approach to percussion ensemble performance has undergone various changes in style and function in the twenty-first century in order to maintain its hegemonic authority within the percussion community and academia. Through a combination of score analysis, archival research, interviews, ethnographic studies, and reflections on my experiences as a trained percussionist and student of Gipson and West, I argue that the percussion orchestra enjoyed significant cultural capital in the early 2010s, as demonstrated by PO works of the period that exhibited a masculine habitus centered on exhibitionism and extreme virtuosic technique. Although the medium's primary supporters, namely American white men, still wield significant institutional power today, the ethnographic research I have conducted over the last year suggests that collegiate groups are developing a greater interest in the accessibility and marketability of their percussion ensemble programming, allowing a wider range of compositional voices an opportunity to contribute to the genre. Additionally, the broader percussion community is striving to become more diverse and inclusive as evidenced by the Percussive Arts Society's newfound commitment to committees, competitions, scholarships, and other projects that celebrate the breadth of the global percussive art form. Because the aesthetic of the masculinized percussion orchestra is antithetical to these newly emerging ideologies, I believe that its hegemony within collegiate percussion ensemble practices may be threatened in the coming decades.

Book An American Approach to World Percussion

Download or read book An American Approach to World Percussion written by Tom Teasley and published by Alfred Music. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American Approach to World Percussion offers Western-trained percussionists a systematic approach from which to draw on their experience as drumset players and rudimental performers, and apply that knowledge to a variety of world percussion instruments. Applications for djembe, doumbek, tambourines, shakers and more are combined, often with four-part coordination. In addition, techniques are frequently interchanged among instruments to demonstrate the commonality of approaches. While this is not a substitute for traditional study of these instruments, An American Approach to World Percussion is a comprehensive study of world percussion from an American jazz perspective. It should also broaden the horizons of those already familiar with traditional applications of these instruments by offering a jazz sensibility. Above all, the student is encouraged to use this material to ignite their own imagination to develop a personal connection with the vast world of world music. Includes over one hour of video instruction.

Book Establishing a Percussion Jazz Ensemble at the Collegiate Level

Download or read book Establishing a Percussion Jazz Ensemble at the Collegiate Level written by Danielle Moreau and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The percussion jazz ensemble is a long-established yet rare component of 21st century percussion studios in the United States. While many American collegiate programs have percussion ensembles that perform jazz-based pieces, none are identified as a "percussion jazz ensemble." This may be for a variety of reasons. Professors may not have considered adding a percussion jazz ensemble to their program because of its scarcity in American universities. Including such a class would be challenging if the instructors did not feel comfortable or familiar enough with jazz idioms and vernacular. Additionally, very few compositions or arrangements are available for this group. While there are several method books on jazz vibraphone, there are no pedagogical resources designed specifically for the percussion jazz ensemble. The purpose of this document is to provide historical context, curricula, resource materials, and arrangements necessary for establishing a percussion jazz ensemble at the collegiate level. The end result will be to demonstrate the importance of an ensemble such as this for aspiring percussionists and motivate institutions focused on Western classical music to incorporate jazz elements into their percussion program. Research conducted for this project was limited to academic universities, pedagogical approaches, and ensembles found only in the United States and will not include a survey of those outside this country.
