Contrary to the usual seasonal tendency, storage holdings of hog products were slightly reduced from the beginning of the period, october 1, 1932 to the end of the period, December 31, 1932. Exports of pork and lard during the 3 - months period were also slibhtly smaller than a year earlier. As a.resu1t of the decline in storage holdings and the reduced exports, the apparent consumption of pork and lard from Federally inspected production from October to December 1932 was only 2 per cent smaller than a.year earlier, although the reduction in the tdtal dressed weiéht of hog slaughter Was about 7 per cent. Lard production per 100 pounds of live weight during the first Quarter of the current marketing gear Was larger than last year and larger than the 5-year average, but the total lard production under Federal inspection has 3 per cent smaller than last year, because of the relatively greater reduction in hog slaughter. Book Price Spreads for Pork Classic Reprint

Download or read book Price Spreads for Pork Classic Reprint written by J. Bruce Bullock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Price Spreads for Pork Since the days when the Midwest was the agricultural frontier of a new and expand ing Nation, hog and pork production have been important agricultural enterprises. Hog production developed along with the remarkable productive capacity of the Corn Belt, providing the framework for the early Corn Belt economy. There was a ready market for pork, both fresh and cured. Lard was the commonly used cook ing fat; ham and bacon, at first delicacies, became the standard American breakfast; and cured or salted pork were standard provision for the military and other world travelers. Pork was more than a staple-the meat was prized. Pork loin even symbolized good eating in the well-known phrase, eating high on the hog. In this century, other products have re placed lard as the primary cooking fat beef has replaced some pork on consumers tables; fresh, frozen, and cured meats of many varieties are available to travelers and, in general, dietary preferences are for less pork than before. However, in spite of the decrease in the demand for pork, as much as half the total corn production is fed to hogs today. Book This Will Make It Taste Good

Download or read book This Will Make It Taste Good written by Vivian Howard and published by Voracious. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Eater Best Cookbook of Fall 2020 From caramelized onions to fruit preserves, make home cooking quick and easy with ten simple "kitchen heroes" in these 125 recipes from the New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of Deep Run Roots. “I wrote this book to inspire you, and I promise it will change the way you cook, the way you think about what’s in your fridge, the way you see yourself in an apron.” Vivian Howard’s first cookbook chronicling the food of Eastern North Carolina, Deep Run Roots, was named one of the best of the year by 18 national publications, including the New York Times, USA Today, Bon Appetit, and Eater, and won an unprecedented four IACP awards, including Cookbook of the Year. Now, Vivian returns with an essential work of home-cooking genius that makes simple food exciting and accessible, no matter your skill level in the kitchen. Each chapter of This Will Make It Taste Good is built on a flavor hero—a simple but powerful recipe like her briny green sauce, spiced nuts, fruit preserves, deeply caramelized onions, and spicy pickled tomatoes. Like a belt that lends you a waist when you’re feeling baggy, these flavor heroes brighten, deepen, and define your food. Many of these recipes are kitchen crutches, dead-easy, super-quick meals to lean on when you’re limping toward dinner. There are also kitchen projects, adventures to bring some more joy into your life. Vivian’s mission is not to protect you from time in your kitchen, but to help you make the most of the time you’ve got. Nothing is complicated, and more than half the dishes are vegetarian, gluten-free, or both. These recipes use ingredients that are easy to find, keep around, and cook with—lots of chicken, prepared in a bevy of ways to keep it interesting, and common vegetables like broccoli, kale, squash, and sweet potatoes that look good no matter where you shop. And because food is the language Vivian uses to talk about her life, that’s what these recipes do, next to stories that offer a glimpse at the people, challenges, and lessons learned that stock the pantry of her life.

Book excerpt: George Perkins Marsh Prize, American Society for Environmental History VSNY Book Award, New York Metropolitan Chapter of the Victorian Society in America Hornblower Award for a First Book, New York Society Library James Broussard Best First Book Prize, Society for Historians of the Early American Republic With pigs roaming the streets and cows foraging in the Battery, antebellum Manhattan would have been unrecognizable to inhabitants of today’s sprawling metropolis. Fruits and vegetables came from small market gardens in the city, and manure piled high on streets and docks was gold to nearby farmers. But as Catherine McNeur reveals in this environmental history of Gotham, a battle to control the boundaries between city and country was already being waged, and the winners would take dramatic steps to outlaw New York’s wild side. “[A] fine book which make[s] a real contribution to urban biography.” —Joseph Rykwert, Times Literary Supplement “Tells an odd story in lively prose...The city McNeur depicts in Taming Manhattan is the pestiferous obverse of the belle epoque city of Henry James and Edith Wharton that sits comfortably in many imaginations...[Taming Manhattan] is a smart book that engages in the old fashioned business of trying to harvest lessons for the present from the past.” —Alexander Nazaryan, New York Times

Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.
