Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vegetable fibers play an important role in domestic use and fiber industry for different purposes such as ropes, chords, twines, binders, gunny bags, carpets etc. Long vegetable fibers include both bast fibers obtained the bark of the stem and the fibers obtained from leaves. Among the bast fibers are utee, kenaf, ramie, flax, Hibiscus spp. and leaf fibers such as Agave sp. The present gives a detailed account of important bast fibers of world with respect to utility, botany, development of fibers, anatomy, methods of extraction, quality. There exist large variations among bast fibers in anatomical structures among different bass fibers crops and among varieties of the same species. In the case of ramie and flax fibers cells, oval are arranged in isolated manner or in patches in the cortex. The bast fibers are extracted by retting process caused by bacterial actions while in the case of ramie being cellulosic the fibers are extracted by chemical degumming process. The book deals with distribution, anatomy, extraction methods of few Mexican laef fibres such as Agave lecheguilla, yucca carnersana exploited extensively in arid lands of Nrteast Mexico. In the last part of the book is given a concise review on the technology of the fibers and its quality. The book will be useful in fiber industry and serve as text book in agriculture.

Book Fiber Crop Based Phytoremediation

Download or read book Fiber Crop Based Phytoremediation written by Vimal Chandra Pandey and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiber Crop–Based Phytoremediation: Socio-economic and Environmental Sustainability provides an informative source of information on using fiber crops for phytoremediation. Phytoremediation is gaining attention globally due to ever-increasing numbers and areas of industrially polluted sites. The major challenge is to develop new and cost-effective solutions to decontaminate polluted sites. In this regard, plant-based remediation, especially using fiber crops, is a promising and cost-effective approach for environmental remediation on a large-scale due to its socio-economic and ecological sustainability. Furthermore, changing environmental conditions also cause various biotic and abiotic stresses in fiber crops and thereby negatively affect the fiber crop establishment, growth and yield. This book will be specifically important to these readers who need to be able to select specific fiber crop species according to site-specificity of the contaminated site. Provides up-to-date research and understanding on how to utilize fiber crops for the phytoremediation of contaminated land Covers a wide range of applicable fiber crops, including bast, grass and woody crops, allowing for the utilization of techniques regardless of specific fiber crop Details the uses and benefits of fiber crop phytoremediation on environmental, societal and economic development

Book World Agriculture Before and After 1492

Download or read book World Agriculture Before and After 1492 written by James F Hancock and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2022 is the 50th anniversary of Alfred Crosby’s celebrated book - The Columbian Exchange: Biological and Cultural Consequences of 1492. In the book, Crosby was the first to discuss the impact that the Spanish and Portuguese colonial period had on world agriculture and human culture. How the crops of the world became homogenized, and how an indigenous culture was destroyed by disease after Columbus landed. His landmark study broke new ground in its broad conceptualization of the Atlantic exchange. Building on what Crosby so succinctly and brilliantly presented, the main goal of this new work is to present the depth of information that has emerged since "The Columbian Exchange" and to discuss more fully the development of crops and agriculture before and after the Iberian contact. It follows the journey of crops and livestock in the Old and New Worlds and end’s with their distribution in today’s world.

Book Natural Fibers Handbook with Cultivation Uses

Download or read book Natural Fibers Handbook with Cultivation Uses written by NIIR Board of Consultants & Engineers and published by NIIR PROJECT CONSULTANCY SERVICES. This book was released on 2005-02-26 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural fibers production, processing and export are vital to the economies of many developing countries and the livelihoods of millions of small scale farmers and low wage workers. Almost all natural fibers are produced by agriculture, and the major part is harvested in the developing world. It is convenient to classify natural fiber in two ways; morphologically, according to the part of plant from which they are obtained and practically according to the uses to which they are put, which in turn depend on their properties. From the view point of the uses vegetable fibers may be classified into following groups; textile fibers, cordage fibers, brush and mat fibers, stuffing and upholstery materials, paper making materials etc. Fibers from the view point of the part are classified as hair fibers, leaf fibers, woody fibers, bast fibers, etc. The use of fibers for paper making differs completely from their use in textiles, in that in papermaking it is ultimate fiber cells which are used; thus in papermaking process consists in breaking down the strands of fiber into the ultimate fibers. Jute, the most important textile fiber apart from cotton, is obtained from two species of corchorus(white jute) and C.olitoriusL. (tossa jute). Farmers around the world produce a wide variety of natural fibres, planting crops and rearing animals. Plant fibres may be from the plant fruit (e.g. cotton), stems (e.g. flax and jute) or leaf (e.g.sisal). Natural fibres are generally considered more environment friendly than synthetics in their production and disposal. However, there is great variation depending on the fibre and the growing conditions. Many chemicals are used to contain pests and weeds. Chemicals are also used in the processing and dyeing which can lead to water contamination. Processing of some natural fibers can lead to high levels of water pollutants, but they consist mostly of biodegradable compounds, in contrast to the persistent chemicals, including heavy metals, released in the effluent from synthetic fiber processing. Farming and production of natural fibres also plays a significant role in eradicating poverty as an important source of farming income and contribution to food security in developing countries. Demand for natural fiber composites are largely driven by increasing environmental awareness. Due to low cost, low density, acceptable specific properties, ease of separation, enhanced energy recovery, CO2 neutrality, biodegradability and recyclable properties, natural fiber use in composites is gaining as demand grows for component materials that are durable, reliable, light weight, with mechanical properties better than those of traditional materials. Total global natural fiber composite market expected to grow at 11% CAGR. Some of the fundamentals of the book are the occurrence and nature of vegetable fibres, conditions necessary for growing flax, mulberry family (moraceae), lime family (titliaceae), experiments on mechanized production of jute, mallow family (malvaceae), kenaf production in various other countries, the use of unretted kenaf ribbons for sack manufacture, pea family (leguminosae), sterculia family (sterculiaceae), agave family (agavaceae), structure of the sisal industry, narcissus family (amaryllidaceae), lily family (liliaceae), pineapple family (bromeliaceae), fibres from other species of musa and a related genus, brush making fibres, etc. The book contains process and other parameters for the manufacturing of fibers arrive from natural sources. Due to eco friendly nature there is very good domestic and export potentiality for natural fiber. This is very useful book for new generation entrepreneurs, consultant institutional libraries, and existing units.
