Book Fashion and the City

Download or read book Fashion and the City written by Vincent Pandolfi and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of culture is increasingly seen as a strategic asset in/for a balanced development of cities. Recent research, however, seems to point to a limited recognition of this potential in local policy-making, culture becoming increasingly linked to aims of economic repositioning. But which aims are exactly involved here? Are we indeed facing a new dominant (and unilateral) approach to culture in Western European cities, leaving the full development potential of the field unexplored? And why might this be the case? Through case studies of fashion in Antwerp, Milan and Amsterdam, the changing strategising of culture in local development (since the 1980s), is linked to the search for new governing arrangements between public and private (cultural) actors within the cities. On the basis of this analysis, a plea is made for a new, and more integrated approach to culture in Western European cities, pointing to the significant challenge of experimenting with new, and more inclusive forms of public-private policy-making in support of this agenda.

Book Immigrant Businesses

Download or read book Immigrant Businesses written by J. Rath and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-02-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few years, a considerable number of immigrants have established their own businesses. In doing so, they have contributed in many ways to the economic development of American and European metropolitan areas. Some businesses have been incorporated into the mainstream, while others have stayed on the economic fringes and got engaged in the informal economy. The starting point of this book is that a proper understanding of these businesses is served by focusing on the embeddedness of immigrant businesses in their economic, politico-institutional and social environments from a multi-disciplinary perspective rather than confining the attention to ethnic-cultural or economic sociological aspects only.

Book Migrating Enterprise and Migrant Entrepreneurship

Download or read book Migrating Enterprise and Migrant Entrepreneurship written by Stephan Raes and published by Het Spinhuis. This book was released on 2000 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1960s onwards the clothing industry in the Neth- erlands and elsewhere in the European Union, experienced a deep crisis. Numerous firms went bankrupt and workers lost their jobs. Imports from low wage countries started providing the bulk of retailers' collections. However, in the 1980s a surprising development took place. In Amsterdam a substantial number of new small clothing firms mostly run by Turkish immigrants were established focusing on short-cycle production. During the 1990s most of these disappeared again. At the same time the import pattern changed to the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe. Stephan Raes shows that the large retailers have become the most powerful players in the sector, and he places the developments against the background of transformations in the political economy of the Netherlands and Turkey. Stephan Raes is an economic anthropologist who currently works at the department of foreign economic relations of the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the Netherlands.

Book Issues in Global Business

Download or read book Issues in Global Business written by SAGE Publishing and published by SAGE Publications, Incorporated. This book was released on 2021-03-03 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2020, COVID-19 starkly demonstrated the global interconnectedness of business, as it disrupted supply chains and manufacturing operations, broadly shuttered retail stores, and led to restrictions on movement and travel around the world. Other events in 2019 also showcased the undeniable globalization of business, be it from the (un)expected ramifications of Brexit to the impacts of data breaches across various industries. Riots in Hong Kong over an extradition bill also sparked huge debate and controversy, and the U.S.-China trade war also caused concern. All of these events may have largely and immediately impacted one region, yet effects reverberate across larger swathes of the globe—ultimately affecting vast areas, industries, and sectors across the international landscape. Issues in Global Business explores all of these and more, across a wide range of topics, including the on-demand economy, global manufacturing, Bitcoin, data security, and many more. Coupled with a comprehensive overview of the business landscape around the world by Dr. Mamoun Benmamoun, an assistant professor at the Boeing Institute of International Business at Saint Louis University, this book provides students with the essential information they need to assess business practices through an international lens.

The man tries to save his bond of marriage but the wronged woman neither wants to be tamed due to aspects of love, nor does she co-operate. Instead, she rather wants her man to close his eyes and to shut up his mouth if ever he wishes to become a legitimate resident in her country. The egoist man doesn't compromise on self-respect of a saintly husband and thus is thrown out into streets quite empty-handed and undocumented. Then he gets afraid of going back to his homeland predicting a social ridiculous. Years passed in such a dreary and stoned life-style that one day the city police arrests him against his unlawful status and surrenders him to the foreign police who when fails to deport, sets him free like a squeezed lemon after he having served a year's custodial sentence. The author describes how a few Asian immigrants and their spoiled descendants who once get settled into the Western states . forget about their past of struggling. . trap and bait to their own continent/ country-fellows by showing on them a false fairyland. . and try to demoralize a Western society by using its culture as a shield or weapon to fulfill their own sensual curiosity which seems difficult to meet in their own sender lands. The author also regrets to inflexibility of the constitution and rejects to the old theory 'nobody is above law'. He urges on the law-makers must to defend on humanitarian grounds to those noble outlanders who become illegal by some accident, or by a misfortune befell on them and not by fraud or cheating like do often the professional invaders or regular tress-passers breaking into some country's barriers. The whole story convincingly draws a picture of human courage and endurance against all odds mixed in shadow of oppression and optimism by giving an entire message 'never quit'. A compulsively true heart saga with a positive energy_ readable, thought-provoking and enjoyable.

Book Enterprising Africa

Download or read book Enterprising Africa written by Stephen Dobson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enterprising Africa explores the future opportunities, challenges, growth areas and key themes that will shape entrepreneurship in the African continent over the next decade. Entrepreneurship can be the key to unlock resilient growth, but only if it is driven by both socially productive and growth-oriented new businesses. The book considers entrepreneurship as an enabler for socio-economic growth and development in Africa, especially in the context of youth unemployment and increasing youth population for which the traditional, and indeed emerging, industrial sectors will not be able to produce sufficient jobs to meet demand. Organised around three thematic parts, Part I covers the notion of inclusive growth and the role that entrepreneurs can play supporting this. Part II considers the dynamic between entrepreneurs and the environment since social, economic and environmental concerns need to build upon each other rather than vie for recognition. Finally, Part III offers chapters exploring policy contexts and the wider institutional ecosystems that need to be developed and enhanced to ensure a strong and vibrant environment for the future entrepreneurs of Africa to thrive. Edited and authored by leading experts in the field, this fascinating text will be of interest to academics as well as students of International, Transformational and Social Entrepreneurship, and International and African Business.

Book Culture Creativity and Economy

Download or read book Culture Creativity and Economy written by Brian J. Hracs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book nuances our understanding of the contemporary creative economy by engaging with a set of three key tensions which emerged over the course of eight European Colloquiums on Culture, Creativity and Economy (CCE): 1) the tension between individual and collaborative creative practices, 2) the tension between tradition and innovation, and 3) the tension between isolated and interconnected spaces of creativity. Rather than focusing on specific processes, such as production, industries or locations, the tensions acknowledge and engage with the messy and restless nature of the creative economy. Individual chapters offer insights into poorly understood practices, locations and contexts such as co-working spaces in Berlin and rural Spain, creative businesses in Leicester and the role and importance of cultural intermediaries in creative economies within Africa. Others examine the nature of trans-local cultural flows, the evolving "field" of fashion, and the implications of social media and crowdfunding platforms. This book will be of interest to students, scholars and professionals researching the creative economy, as well as specific cultural and creative industries, across the humanities and social sciences.

Book European Metropolitan Commercial Real Estate Markets

Download or read book European Metropolitan Commercial Real Estate Markets written by Ed F. Nozeman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metropolitan commercial real estate markets are highly influenced by global forces, the regional economy, and institutional behaviour. While descriptions of regional commercial real estate markets are well known and widespread in academic literature, this monograph goes beyond that in explaining the dynamics in and variations between European metropolitan markets. By comparing those markets on relevant indicators and through extensive data analysis, a number of explaining factors is revealed. Contributions on specific metropolitan markets with different positions within the real estate cycle illustrate not only the characteristics of the local economy and its institutions, but also urgent issues such as battling vacancy, changing retail hierarchy or managing obsolescence.
