Book Understanding Mineral Deposits

Download or read book Understanding Mineral Deposits written by Kula Misra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mineral deposits have supplied useful or valuable material for human consumption long before they became objects of scientific curiosity or commercial exploitation. In fact, the earliest human interest in rocks was probably because of the easily accessible, useful (e. g. , red pigment in the form of earthy hematite) or valuable (e. g. , native gold and gemstones) materials they contained at places. In modem times, the study of mineral deposits has evolved into an applied science employing detailed field observations, sophisticated laboratory techniques for additional information, and computer modeling to build complex hypotheses. Understanding concepts that would someday help geologists to find new mineral deposits or exploit the known ones more efficiently have always been, and will continue to be, at the core of any course on mineral deposits, but it is a fascinating subject in its own right, even for students who do not intend to be professional economic geologists. I believe that a course on mineral deposits should be designed as a "capstone course" that illustrates a comprehensive application of concepts from many other disciplines in geology (mineralogy, stratigraphy and sedimentation, structure and tectonics, petrology, geochemistry, paleontology, geomorphology, etc. ). This book is intended as a text for such an introductory course in economic geology, primarily for senior undergraduate and graduate students in colleges and universities. It should also serve as a useful information resource for professional economic geologists.

Book Platinum Nickel Chromium Deposits

Download or read book Platinum Nickel Chromium Deposits written by Swapan Kumar Haldar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-08-10 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Platinum-Nickel-Chromium Deposits: Geology, Exploration, and Reserve Base is the first reference book to combine information on the discovery of numerous minerals within existing deposits. This book recognizes the close affinity and great natural coexistence of platinum, palladium, chromium, nickel, copper, gold, and silver hosted by unique stratigraphy (mafic-ultramafic intrusive of layered ingenious complex) in a diverse structural set up. The chapters are organized in a logical sequence of introductory physical and chemical properties, demand-supply scenario, price trend, substitution-recycling and uses of these metals, stratigraphy and host rocks, geochemistry, global distribution of existing deposits in six mega continents, genetic system, reserves-resources overview, common characteristic features aiding as exploration guides for new targets, hazards, and sustainable development. This reference book is a must for students, research scholars, teachers, and professional explorers in economic geology, geography, and allied subjects. Presents over 150 full color illustrations including maps, diagrams, and charts Illustrates the key concepts in a clear and informative manner Authored by one of the world’s leading geoscientists Provides unique coverage of high value mineral deposits through an approach accessible to industry professionals, academic researchers, and students alike

Book Mineral Deposits and Earth Evolution

Download or read book Mineral Deposits and Earth Evolution written by Geological Society of London and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2005 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mineral deposits are not only primary sources of wealth generation, but also act as windows through which to view the evolution and interrelationships of the Earth system. Deposits formed throughout the last 3.8 billion years of the Earth's history preserve key evidence with which to test fundamental questions about the evolution of the Earth. These include: the nature of early magmatic and tectonic processes, supercontinent reconstructions, the state of the atmosphere and hydrosphere with time, and the emergence and development of life. The interlinking processes that form mineral deposits have always sat at the heart of the Earth system and the potential for using deposits as tools to understand that evolving system over geological time is increasingly recognized. This volume contains research aimed both at understanding the origins of mineral deposits and at using mineral deposits as tools to explore different long-term Earth processes.

Book excerpt: This far-reaching report addresses nickel industry's key issues as it emerges from the roller-coaster ride of price volatility which has characterised it in recent years. In 2002 the indications are for an upswing in demand as industrial activity starts to pick up again: however, on the supply side it is unclear how much output will be realised from the "mega" projects that were announced that the end of the 1990s. Both nickel consumption and prices could be adversely affected in the future by environmental restrictions, increasing substitution of nickel-containing materials and the development of relatively low-grade lateritic nickel deposits. Up-to-date, in-depth research and analysis to make you an authority on the world's major nickel markets Presenting a truly global picture, this report examines the current state of the nickel industry and the prospects for the future. Some key findings of this report Some analysts predict that PAL technology could increase world nickel supply by 0.8 million tonnes per year within the next 10 years. Murrin Murrin, the largest of the three Australian "mega" projects, will be a major addition to Australia's nickel-producing capacity. Anaconda and Glencore have committed to expanding its total nickel production capacity to 115,000 tonnes per annum. Total world demand for primary nickel grew by 6.3% in 2000 to reach a record level of 1,115,000 tonnes. Demand for nickel in batteries is expected to soar, fuelled by increased consumption of both rechargeable batteries and new forms of automotive batteries. The future levels of production and consumption in Russia are expected to continue to have significant, but unpredictable, effects on world nickel prices. A clear and detailed analysis of the industry and its major markets A survey of trends in mining, refining, processing, end-use and consumption Unique industry and market forecasts
