Book excerpt: Surmounting the Barriers: Ethnic Diversity in Engineering Education is the summary of a workshop held in September 2013 to take a fresh look at the impediments to greater diversification in engineering education. The workshop brought together educators in engineering from two- and four-year colleges and staff members from the three sponsoring organizations: the National Science Foundation, the National Academy of Engineering and the American Society for Engineering Education. While the goal of diversifying engineering education has long been recognized, studied, and subjected to attempted interventions, progress has been fitful and slow. This report discusses reasons why past recommendations to improve diversity had not been adopted in full or in part. Surmounting the Barriers identifies a series of key impediments, including a lack of incentives for faculty and institutions; inadequate or only short-term financial support; an unsupportive institutional and faculty culture and environment; a lack of institutional and constituent engagement; and inadequate assessments, metrics, and data tracking. The report also shares success stories about instances where barriers to diversity have been identified and surmounted, and the resources that could enable real solutions to implement steps toward progress.

Book excerpt: Global Health, a field of study, research and practice defined in 2009 with precursors in international health and development, is currently reckoning with itself. The field has well-intended goals emphasizing collaboration and dialogue between population health, public health, clinical care, and other disciplines to address socioeconomic determinants of health, and employing interdisciplinary approaches to address health inequities wherever they exist. Despite these lofty ideals, there are concerns that the field itself has historically served to reinforce rather than deconstruct colonialism and power imbalances. At this point in time, the field has evolved toward a vision of a community of practice between institutions across the income spectrum (HIC, LMIC, LIC) working in bidirectional and multidirectional ways to develop staff, stuff, space, systems and strategies to eliminate health disparities. However, with deeply rooted colonial assumptions, racism, elitism, and other forms of bias underlying institutions and individuals, initiatives operating under the auspices of Global Health are all too often antithetical to the pursuit itself.

Societal needs of their expertise include discovery, innovation, and workforce development. It is critical to provide STEM faculty with the professional development to support their complex roles and to base this development on evidence derived from research. This edited handbook provides STEM stakeholders with an opportunity to share studies and/or experiences that explore STEM faculty development (FD) in higher education settings. More specifically, we include work that examines faculty development planning, techniques/models, experiences, and outcomes focused on supporting the teaching, research, service, and leadership responsibilities of STEM faculty. The Handbook is suited for researchers and practitioners in STEM, STEM Education, Mathematics, Science, Technology, and Engineering disciplines. This handbook is organized around three constructs (INPUTS, MECHANISMS, and OUTPUTS). Questions addressed in the handbook around this topic include: What barriers/supports exist for STEM faculty? How are these barriers/supports being addressed through STEM FD? How do contexts (e.g., economic, political, historical) influence faculty/administrative needs related to STEM FD? How do demographics (e.g., gender, ethnicity, age, family background) influence faculty/administrative needs related to STEM FD?
