Book The Physics of High Brightness Beams

Download or read book The Physics of High Brightness Beams written by Jamie Rosenzweig and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the 1999 ICFA workshop on the physics of high brightness beams. The workshop took a snapshot in time of a fast moving, interdisciplinary field driven by advanced applications such as high gradient, high energy physics linear colliders, high gain free electron lasers, heavy ion fusion, and transmutation of nuclear materials. While the field of high brightness beam physics has traditionally been divided into disparate electron and heavy ion communities, the workshop brought the two types of researchers together, so that a sharing of insights and methods could be achieved. Thus, this book represents a unifying step in the development of the diverse fascinating discipline of high brightness beam physics, with its challenges rooted in collective, nonlinear particle motion and ultra-high electromagnetic energy density.

Book Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers

Download or read book Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laser has revolutionized many areas of science and society, providing bright and versatile light sources that transform the ways we investigate science and enables trillions of dollars of commerce. Now a second laser revolution is underway with pulsed petawatt-class lasers (1 petawatt: 1 million billion watts) that deliver nearly 100 times the total world's power concentrated into a pulse that lasts less than one-trillionth of a second. Such light sources create unique, extreme laboratory conditions that can accelerate and collide intense beams of elementary particles, drive nuclear reactions, heat matter to conditions found in stars, or even create matter out of the empty vacuum. These powerful lasers came largely from U.S. engineering, and the science and technology opportunities they enable were discussed in several previous National Academies' reports. Based on these advances, the principal research funding agencies in Europe and Asia began in the last decade to invest heavily in new facilities that will employ these high-intensity lasers for fundamental and applied science. No similar programs exist in the United States. Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers assesses the opportunities and recommends a path forward for possible U.S. investments in this area of science.

Book The Physics and Applications of High Brightness Beams

Download or read book The Physics and Applications of High Brightness Beams written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working group A was devoted to high brightness beam production and characterization. The presentations and discussions could be categorized as cathode physics, new photoinjector designs, computational modeling of high brightness beams, and new experimental methods and results. Several novel injector and cathode designs were presented. However, a standard 1.5 cell rf photoinjector is still the most common source for high brightness beams. New experimental results and techniques were presented and thoroughly discussed. The brightest beam produced in a rf photoinjector published at the time of the workshop is approximately 2 1014 A/(m-rad)2 at Sumitomo Heavy Industries in Japan with 1 nC of charge, a 9 ps FWHM long laser pulse and a normalized transverse emittance of 1.2 pm. The emittance was achieved by utilizing a temporally flat laser pulse which decreased the emittance by an estimated factor of 2 from the beam produced with a Gaussian pulse shape with an identical pulse length.

Book Theoretical and Computational Investigation of High Brightness Beams

Download or read book Theoretical and Computational Investigation of High Brightness Beams written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and computational investigations of adiabatic thermal beams have been carried out in parameter regimes relevant to the development of advanced high-brightness, high-power accelerators for high-energy physics research and for various applications such as light sources. Most accelerator applications require high-brightness beams. This is true for high-energy accelerators such as linear colliders. It is also true for energy recovery linacs (ERLs) and free electron lasers (FELs) such as x-ray free electron lasers (XFELs). The breakthroughs and highlights in our research in the period from February 1, 2013 to November 30, 2013 were: a) Completion of a preliminary theoretical and computational study of adiabatic thermal Child-Langmuir flow (Mok, 2013); and b) Presentation of an invited paper entitled?Adiabatic Thermal Beams in a Periodic Focusing Field? at Space Charge 2013 Workshop, CERN, April 16-19, 2013 (Chen, 2013). In this report, an introductory background for the research project is provided. Basic theory of adiabatic thermal Child-Langmuir flow is reviewed. Results of simulation studies of adiabatic thermal Child-Langmuir flows are discussed.

Book High Performance Accelerator Modeling

Download or read book High Performance Accelerator Modeling written by Frederick Cropp and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main charges of beam physics is to improve the overall beam quality delivered to experiments and applications, which is generally quantified by the beam brightness. High brightness beams have numerous applications, including x-ray free electron lasers and ultrafast electron diffraction (UED). To these ends, this thesis details efforts to use high-performance models --- high-fidelity models that execute quickly --- for controls and diagnostics. To demonstrate the generality of these techniques, this thesis focuses on three of the most successful photoinjector designs currently used worldwide: the UCLA/SLAC/BNL-type high-gradient S-band gun, the continuous-wave high-repetition rate VHF APEX gun and the L-band DESY-PITZ-type gun. Work will be shown from Pegasus (UCLA), HiRES (LBNL) and FAST (FNAL). Specifically, data-driven models for online virtual diagnostics are presented, in this case, in the context of UED at HiRES, leading to a temporal resolution improvement. Methods for improving the fidelity of physics-based models are discussed, with examples at HiRES, Pegasus and FAST. Markov-chain Monte Carlo analysis is applied to match simulations, in the context of photocathode studies at HiRES and Pegasus. Lastly, the augmentation of online model-based predictions with model-independent optimization is explored in a fluctuating environment at Pegasus and HiRES. A central theme of this dissertation is working with parameter fluctuations when modeling an accelerator beamline. Long-term drifts and shot-to-shot jitter exist in every accelerator to a varying degree and therefore play an important role in every chapter of this dissertation. This thesis attempts to address the issues associated with these fluctuations when trying to develop faithful model representations of the system.

Book Magnetism and Synchrotron Radiation

Download or read book Magnetism and Synchrotron Radiation written by Eric Beaurepaire and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-12 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in the synthesis of new materials with often complex, nano-scaled structures require increasingly sophisticated experimental techniques that can probe the electronic states, the atomic magnetic moments and the magnetic microstructures responsible for the properties of these materials. At the same time, progress in synchrotron radiation techniques has ensured that these light sources remain a key tool of investigation, e.g. synchrotron radiation sources of the third generation are able to support magnetic imaging on a sub-micrometer scale. With the Fifth Mittelwihr School on Magnetism and Synchrotron Radiation the tradition of teaching the state-of-the-art on modern research developments continues and is expressed through the present set of extensive lectures provided in this volume. While primarily aimed at postgraduate students and newcomers to the field, this volume will also benefit researchers and lecturers actively working in the field.
