Book Proceedings of the Workshop on Future Directions in Quark Nuclear Physics 10 20 March 1998 Adelaide

Download or read book Proceedings of the Workshop on Future Directions in Quark Nuclear Physics 10 20 March 1998 Adelaide written by Anthony W. Thomas and published by World Scientific Publishing Company Incorporated. This book was released on 1999 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most fundamental questions in understanding strong interaction is whether or not quarks and gluons play a significant role in nuclear systems. At high densities we need to explore the existence and nature of a deconfinement phase transition. At lower densities we wish to study the changes in the properties of a hadron particle as mass and electroweak form factors, when it is immersed in nuclear matter. Finally, we may even ask whether the internal structure of the nucleon plays a role in the binding and properties of finite nuclei. On the theoretical side the issues raised here are of concern to a very broad community, from those working in traditional many-body physics, to those building effective field theories, to those working in lattice QCD. Experimentally, there are many accelerators, mature, new and planned, which can offer insight into this field -- from SLAC to HERA, COSY, CELSIUS and TJNAF. This workshop brought together key figures from all areas of theoretical and experimental physics concerned with this fundamental problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Editors Preface: "Quark Matter 1987 was attended by about 250 scientists, representing 75 research institutions around the world - the scientific community engaged in experimental and theoretical studies of high energy nuclear collisions. The central theme of the meeting was the possibility of achieving extreme energy densities in extended systems of strongly interacting matter - with the ultimate aim of creating in the laboratory a deconfined state of matter, a state in which quarks and gluons attain the active degrees of freedom. High energy accelerator beams and cosmic radiation projectiles provide the experimental tools for this endeavour; on the theoretical side, it is intimately connected to recent developments in the non-perturbative study of quantum chromodynamics. Phase transitions between hadronic matter and quark-gluon plasma are of basic interest also for our understanding of the dynamics of the early universe ... A very special feature of this Sixth Quark Matter Conference was the advent of the first experimental results from dedicated accelerator studies. These were conducted during 1986/87 at the AGS of Brookhaven National Laboratory ... and at the CERN SPS ... An intense discussion of these data formed the main activity of the meeting.

Book Proceedings of the First Workshop on Quark Hadron Duality and Transition to PQCD

Download or read book Proceedings of the First Workshop on Quark Hadron Duality and Transition to PQCD written by Alessandra Fantoni and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While perturbative QCD methods fully describe experimental results at high energies, and chiral perturbation theory is the low energy effective theory of the strong interactions, a form of duality is observed connecting these two regimes. In these intermediate kinematics, a wide variety of reactions are observed which can be described simultaneously by single particle (quark) scattering, and by exclusive resonance (hadron) scattering. The contributions in this proceedings volume discuss recent and existing results, and aim to foster current and future research, investigating the phenomenon of quark-hadron duality. This unique volume contains research work by scientists from different arenas of hadronic physics, dealing with different manifestations of quark-hadron duality. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introductory Remarks on Duality in Lepton-Hadron Scattering (490 KB). • Author : Kohsuke Yagi

Download or read book Quark Gluon Plasma written by Kohsuke Yagi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quark-Gluon Plasma introduces the primordial matter, composed of two types of elementary particles, created at the time of the Big Bang. During the evolution of the universe, Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) undergoes a transition to hadronic matter governed by quantum chromodynamics, the law of strong interactions. After an introduction to gauge theories, various aspects of quantum chromodynamic phase transitions are illustrated in a self-contained manner. The cosmological approach and renormalization group are discussed, as well as the cosmological and astrophysical implications of QGP, on the basis of Einstein's equations. Recent developments towards the formation of QGP in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions are also presented in detail. This text is suitable as an introduction for graduate students, as well as providing a valuable reference for researchers already working in this and related fields. It includes eight appendices and over a hundred exercises.

Book Pan Xiii Particles And Nuclei Proceedings Of The Xiii International Conference

Download or read book Pan Xiii Particles And Nuclei Proceedings Of The Xiii International Conference written by Alessandro Pascolini and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-05-31 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This international conference was dedicated to the interface between nuclear and elementary particle physics. It was the thirteenth in a series initiated by T.E.O. Ericson, A. de Shalit and V. F. Weisskopf at CERN in 1963. The series provides the principal international forum for the presentation and critical examination of the main results of the experimental and theoretical research in the field of interest common to nuclear and particle physics. The topics cover the energy region where nucleons must be treated as composite particles, but quarks and gluons cannot be considered asymptotically free.PAN XIII reviews the status of the field in a delicate stage of transition: new experiments and instrumental facilities are bringing in more detailed and more accurate data on the various facets of the nuclear and subnuclear universe, but we are still far from a satisfactory and complete description of nucleons and nuclei in terms of underlying quarks and their interactions.

Book Quark Gluon Plasma

  • Author : Bikash Sinha

Download or read book Quark Gluon Plasma written by Bikash Sinha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is a state of matter predicted by the theory of strong interactions - Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The area of QGP lies at the interface of particle physics, field theory, nuclear physics and many-body theory, statistical physics, cosmology and astrophysics. In its brief history (about a decade), QGP has seen a rapid convergence of ideas from these previously diverging disciplines. This volume includes the lectures delivered by eminent specialists to students without prior experience in QGP. Each course thus starts from the basics and takes the students by steps to the current problems. The chapters are self-contained and pedagogic in style. The book may therefore serve as an introduction for advanced graduate students intending to enter this field or for physicists working in other areas. Experts in QGP may also find this volume a handy reference. Specific examples, used to elucidate how theoretical predictions and experimentally accessible quantities may not always correspond to one another, make this book ideal for self-study for beginners. This feature will also make the volume thought-provoking for QGP practitioners.
