Book A Flavor Factory And Nuclear Physics Facility Based On Superconducting Linacs

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1987 a Workshop was held in Courmay-cur (Italy) on ''Heavy-Quark Factory and Nuclear-Physics Facility with Superconducting Linacs''. In this paper the authors summarize and update the main machine points discussed in detail in the Proceedings of the workshop. The facility proposed by the authors is schematically shown in Figure 1 which is taken from Ref. [3]. The ''SC radiofrequency complex'' is a recirculated superconducting electron and positron linac which serves as a b{bar b} factory and a high-duty cycle nuclear physics facility. It can provide electron-positron collisions in the c.m. energy range 10 d"W d"20 GeV with luminosities L d"1034 cm−2 s−1 and, at the same time, high intensity and large duty cycle electron beams for nuclear physics experiments up to about 10 GeV. The scheme of Figure 1 consists of two racetrack linacs, each one being similar to the CEBAF design [4]. It offers also the possibility of producing c{bar c} (quarks) for 3 d"W d"4 GeV with L> 1032 cm−2 s−1 and of colliding 2.5 Gev positrons (extracted from the damping ring) with 11.2 GeV electrons, so as to produce moving [Upsilon](4S) states and have an easier access to the study of CP violation. The main parameters for the b{bar b} factory are collected in Table 1. For nuclear physics the CW beam has a current d"200 [mu]A and a duty cycle e"80%.

Book CP Violation From Quarks to Leptons

Download or read book CP Violation From Quarks to Leptons written by M. Giorgi and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2006-07-25 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time after the discovery in 1964, by Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay, that the long-lived neutral kaon decays both into three and into two pions, which has since been taken as proof of CP violation, successive new and more precise experiments confirmed the original evidence and provided results compatible with a phenomenological description confining the CP violation to the mixing between neutral kaons and antikaons. However the Standard Model, with three generations of quarks, linking as it does CP violation to the presence of a single non trivial phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix, implies that if CP violation exists at all, then it is a general property of weak interactions, appearing in transitions were amplitudes involving all three quark families interfere with each other, producing effects with a magnitude related to that of the CKM coefficients. This fact has stimulated an impressive amount of theoretical work leading in many cases to precise predictions. This publication reviews the field, from both the theoretical and experimental point of view, while planning for the forthcoming experimentation at LHC and considering possible new facilities for kaon, B meson and neutrino physics. Book The Nature of Hadrons and Nuclei by Electron Scattering

Download or read book The Nature of Hadrons and Nuclei by Electron Scattering written by Amand Faessler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics, Volume 24: The Nature of Hadrons and Nuclei by Electron Scattering covers the proceedings of the International School of Nuclear Physics. The book presents 24 papers that discuss topics concerning hadrons and nuclei. The coverage of the text includes electron scattering and few-nucleon systems; occupation probabilities of shell-model orbitals; and the response function of nuclear matter. The book also tackles the internal spin structure of the nucleon; parity-violating electron scattering; and hard pion exchange currents and the backward deuteron disintegration. The text will be of great use to scientists involved in hadron and nucleon research.

Book Photodisintegration of the Deuteron

Download or read book Photodisintegration of the Deuteron written by H. Arenhövel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 50 years ago, in 1934, Chadwick and Goldhaber (ChG 34) published a paper entitled "A 'Nuclear Photo-effect': Disintegration of the Diplon by -y-Rays."l in the introduction: They noted "By analogy with the excitation and ionisation of atoms by light, one might expect that any complex nucleus should be excited or 'ionised', that is, disintegrated, by -y-rays of suitable energy", and furthermore: "Heavy hydrogen was chosen as the element first to be examined, because the diplon has a small mass defect and also because it is the simplest of all nuclear systems and its properties are as important in nuclear theory as the hydrogen is in atomic theory". Almost at the same time, in 1935, the first theoretical paper on the photodisinte gration of the deuteron entitled "Quantum theory of the diplon" by Bethe and Peierls (BeP 35) appeared. It is not without significance that these two papers mark the be ginning of photonuclear physics in general and emphasize in particular the special role the two-body system has played in nuclear physics since then and still plays. A steady flow of experimental and theoretical papers on deuteron photo disintegration and its inverse reaction, n-p capture, shows the continuing interest in this fundamental process (see fig. 1.1).

Book Heavy Flavours and High Energy Collisions in the 1 100 TeV Range

Download or read book Heavy Flavours and High Energy Collisions in the 1 100 TeV Range written by A. Ali and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is based on the proceedings of the 6th and 7th INFN ELOISATRON project workshops, held at the Centro di Cultura Scientifica "Et tore Majorana" CCSEM, Erice-Trapani, Sicily, Italy, in the period June 10-27, 1988. The topics of the two workshops were, respectively: - Heavy Flavours: Status and Perspectives, and - Novel Features of High Energy Collisions in 1-100 TeV Region. They were attended by sixty-three physicists. The two workshops were followed by a meeting of the INFN ELOISATRON working group, also held at the CCSEM in the period October 7-15, 1988 in which twenty-five physicists participated. Since there was quite a bit of overlap among speakers, participants and the topics covered at the three meetings, we have decided to issue ajoint proceeding, with the first part entitled: Heavy Flavour Physics, and the second: High Energy Physics with 1-100 Te V Proton Beams. Some of the reports included in this volume have been contributed by the INFN ELOISATRON working group members. The first. part of these proceedings deals mostly with the presentation and inter pretation of results in t.he so-called fiavour physics sector. New results, which have become available in the last three years from experiments involving kaons, charmed and beauty hadrons, and searches for the still missing top quark at the present and fothcoming colliders are topics of major interest. here. The contributions in this part are organized in three categories: Experimental Results, Theoretical Interpretation, and Future Directions.
