Fenimore Cooper, Vol. 5 of 10: The Crater; Miles Wallingford; Homeward Bound We believe that, in some countries, a woman's name is not properly considered to be changed by marriage, but she be comes a Mrs. Only in connection with the name of her husband. Thus Jane Smith. Becomes Mrs. John Jones, but not Mrs. Jane Jones. It is on this idea we suppose that our ancestors the English - every Englishman, as a matter of course, being every American's ancestor - thus it is, we suppose, therefore, that our ancestors, who pay so much more attention to such matters than we do ourselves, in their table of courtesy, call the wife of Lord John Russell, Lady John, and not Lady - whatever her Christian name may hap pen to be. We suppose, moreover, it is on this principle that Mrs. General This, Mrs. Dr. That, and Mrs. Senator T'other, are as inaccurate as they are notoriously vulgar. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Works of J. Fenimore Cooper, Vol. 5 of 10: The Crater, Miles Wallingford, Homeward Bound; Illustrated With Wood-Engravings The faithful, and once lovely partner of this principal personage of our history is also dead. It would seem that it was not intended they should be long asunder. But their time was come, and they might almost be said to have departed in com pany. The same is true of 'friends Robert and Martha, who have also filled their time, and gone hence, it is 'to be hoped, to a better world. Some few of the younger persons of our drama still exist, but it has been remarked of them, that they avoid conversing of the events of their younger days. Youth is the season of hope, and hope disappointed has little to induce us to dwell on its de ceptive pictures. If those who now live in this republic can see any grounds for a timely warning in the events here recorded, it may hap pen that the mercy of a divine Creator may still preserve that which he has hitherto cherished and protected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An aesthetic of unoriginality shaped literary style and reader taste for decades of the nineteenth century. While critics in the twentieth century and beyond have upheld originality and innovation as essential characteristics of literary achievement, they were not features particularly prized by earlier American audiences, Claudia Stokes contends. On the contrary, readers were taught to value familiarity, traditionalism, and regularity. Literary originality was often seen as a mark of vulgar sensationalism and poor quality. In Old Style Stokes offers the first dedicated study of a forgotten nineteenth-century aesthetic, explicating the forms, practices, conventions, and uses of unoriginality. She focuses in particular on the second quarter of the century, when improvements in printing and distribution caused literary markets to become flooded with new material, and longstanding reading practices came under threat. As readers began to prefer novelty to traditional forms, advocates openly extolled unoriginality in an effort to preserve the old literary ways. Old Style examines this era of significant literary change, during which a once-dominant aesthetic started to give way to modern preferences. If writing in the old style came to be associated with elite conservatism—a linkage that contributed to its decline in the twentieth century—it also, paradoxically provided marginalized writers—people of color, white women, and members of the working class—the literary credentials they needed to enter print. Writing in the old style could affirm an aspiring author's training, command of convention, and respectability. In dismissing unoriginality as the literary purview of the untalented or unambitious, Stokes cautions, we risk overlooking something of vital importance to generations of American writers and readers.
