Book Works of Lord Byron Vol 8 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Works of Lord Byron Vol 8 Classic Reprint written by George Gordon Byron and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Works of Lord Byron, Vol. 8 ["Cain was begun at Ravenna, on the 16th of July, 1821 - completed on the 9th of September - and published, in the same volume with "Sardanapalus" and "The Two Foscari," in December. Perhaps no production of Lord Byron has been more generally admired, on the score of ability, than this "Mystery;" - certainly none, on first appearing, exposed the author to fiercer tempest of personal abuse. Besides being unmercifully handled in most of the critical journals of the day, "Cain" was made the subject of a solemn separate essay, entitled "A Remonstrance addressed to Mr. Murray respecting a recent Publication - by Oxoniensis;" of which we may here preserve a specimen: - "There is a method of producing conviction, not to be found in any of the treatises on logic, but which I am persuaded you could be quickly made to understand; it is the argumentum ad crumenam; and this, I trust, will be brought home to you in a variety of ways; not least, I expect, in the profit you hope to make by the offending publication. As a bookseller I conclude you have but one standard of poetic excellence - the extent of your sale. Without assuming any thing beyond the bounds of ordinary foresight, I venture to foretel, that in this case you will be mistaken: the book will disappoint your cupidity, as much as it discredits your feeling an discretion. Your noble employer has deceived you, Mr. Murray: he ha profited by the celebrity of his name to palm upon you obsolete trash, the very off-scourings of Bayle and Voltaire, which he has made you pay for a though it were first-rate poetry and sound metaphysics. But I tell you (and, if you doubt it, you may consult any of the literary gentlemen who frequent your reading-room) that this poem, this 'Mystery, ' with which you have insulted us, is nothing more than a cento from Voltaires novel, and the most objectionable articles in Bayle's Dictionary, served up in clumsy cuttings of ten syllables, for the purpose of giving it the guise of poetry. "Still, though 'Cain' has no claims to originality, there are other objects to which it may be made subservient; and so well are the noble author's schemes arranged, that in some of them he will be sure to succeed. "In the first place, this publication may be useful as a financial measure. It may seem hard to suspect, that the high-souled philosophy, of which his Lordship makes profession, could be 'servile to the influence' of money; but you could tell us. Sir, if you would, what sort of a hand your noble friend is at a bargain; whether Plutus does not sometimes go shares with Apollo in his inspirations." Book The Works of Lord Byron Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Works of Lord Byron Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by George Gordon Byron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Lord Byron, Vol. 1 Two great collections of Byron's letters have been already printed. In Moore's Life which appeared in 1830, 561 were given. These, in FitzGreene Halleck's American edition of Byron's Works published in 1847, were increased to 635. The first volume of a third collection, edited by Mr. W. E. Henley, appeared early in 1897. A comparison of the number of letters contained in these three collections down to August 22, 1811, shows that Moore prints 61, Halleck 78, and Mr. Henley 88. In other words, the edition of 1897, which was the most complete so far as it goes, added 27 letters to that of 1830, and 10 to that of 1847. But it should be remembered that by far the greater part of the material added by Halleck and Mr. Henley was seen and rejected by Moore. The present edition, down to August 22, 1811, prints 168 letters, or an addition of 107 to Moore, 90 to Halleck, and 80 to Mr. Henley. Of this additional matter considerably more than two-thirds was inaccessible to Moore in 1830. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Vol. 2: Large Print By George Gordon Byron The Works of Lord Byron. Vol. 2 by George Gordon Byron Byron INTRODUCTION TOTHE FIRST AND SECOND CANTOS OFCHILDE HAROLD. The First Canto of Childe Harold was begun at Janina, in Albania, October 31, 1809, and the Second Canto was finished at Smyrna, March 28, 1810. The dates were duly recorded on the MS.; but in none of the letters which Byron wrote to his mother and his friends from the East does he mention or allude to the composition or existence of such a work. In one letter, however, to his mother (January 14, 1811, Letters, 1898, i. 308), he informs her that he has MSS. in his possession which may serve to prolong his memory, if his heirs and executors "think proper to publish them;" but for himself, he has "done with authorship.
