Book excerpt: "The Crayon Papers" is a collection of essays and short stories written by Washington Irving, one of America's most celebrated 19th-century authors. The book was first published in 1855. This collection is a part of Irving's larger body of work, often referred to as the "Crayon Chronicles," which also includes "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." and "Bracebridge Hall." The essays and short stories in "The Crayon Papers" are written in Irving's signature style, which is known for its wit, humor, and evocative storytelling. The essays typically have a narrative quality, offering vivid descriptions, anecdotes, and often a touch of the supernatural or romantic elements. One of the most famous essays in this collection is "The Christmas Dinner," in which Irving vividly describes the customs and traditions of Christmas celebrations in England. It's a charming and nostalgic portrayal of the holiday season, reminiscent of his earlier work in "Old Christmas." Other essays in the collection explore a wide range of topics, including travel, literature, and art. Irving's tales are often set in Europe, and he frequently draws upon his experiences during his travels to provide readers with a sense of the places and people he encountered. Throughout "The Crayon Papers," readers can expect to find Irving's keen observations of human nature, his love for folklore and legend, and his ability to blend fact and fiction seamlessly. This collection is an excellent example of Irving's mastery of the essay form and his talent for combining entertainment with thought-provoking commentary. While "The Crayon Papers" may not be as famous as some of Washington Irving's other works like "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" or "Rip Van Winkle," it still showcases his remarkable storytelling abilities and enduring charm. It's a delightful collection that provides insight into the mind of a literary giant of the 19th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rough draughts of some of the following tales and essays were actually written during a residence in the Alhambra; others were subsequently added, founded on notes and observations made there. Care was taken to maintain local coloring and verisimilitude; so that the whole might present a faithful and living picture of that microcosm, that singular little world into which I had been fortuitously thrown; and about which the external world had a very imperfect idea. It was my endeavor scrupulously to depict its half Spanish, half Oriental character; its mixture of the heroic, the poetic, and the grotesque; to revive the traces of grace and beauty fast fading from its walls; to record the regal and chivalrous traditions concerning those who once trod its courts; and the whimsical and superstitious legends of the motley race now burrowing among its ruins.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dolph Heyliger: A Story From Bracebridge Hall Dolph Heyliger is one of the stories contained in the volume entitled "Bracebridge Hall or The Humorists," a medley by Geoffrey Crayon, Gentleman, which Washington Irving published in 1822. It consists of a series of brief papers descriptive of English country life and character as he himself saw, knew, and loved it, intermingled with stories that are supposed to be told by the visitors at the Hall, which is a typical old English homestead, or by members of the family living there; the whole volume reminding us very much of the Roger de Coverley Papers in the "Spectator," which were written one hundred and ten years before. Dolph Heyliger is one of the stories which the author describes himself as telling to the assembled family and their guests. It belongs to the group of legendary tales of the Dutch settlers in New York State, with which Irving's name will be forever associated. It contains some of Irving's best writing, and supplies admirable models for imitation by students of narrative and description. Although Washington Irving had a tendency in his youth to a fatal disease, he lived beyond the allotted span of three score years and ten, for he was born in 1783 and died in 1859, thus illustrating the old saying that "creaking doors last longest on their hinges." He was never married, but remained faithful to the love of his youth, - a beautiful girl, who was taken from him by death. He was full of chivalry and delicacy in his attitude toward the other sex, and he often refers to them in his writings in language of commiserative tenderness, mingled sometimes with a tendency to banter their weaknesses good-humoredly.
