Book Performance Modeling for Computer Architects

Download or read book Performance Modeling for Computer Architects written by C. M. Krishna and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1995-10-14 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As computers become more complex, the number and complexity of the tasks facing the computer architect have increased. Computer performance often depends in complex way on the design parameters and intuition that must be supplemented by performance studies to enhance design productivity. This book introduces computer architects to computer system performance models and shows how they are relatively simple, inexpensive to implement, and sufficiently accurate for most purposes. It discusses the development of performance models based on queuing theory and probability. The text also shows how they are used to provide quick approximate calculations to indicate basic performance tradeoffs and narrow the range of parameters to consider when determining system configurations. It illustrates how performance models can demonstrate how a memory system is to be configured, what the cache structure should be, and what incremental changes in cache size can have on the miss rate. A particularly deep knowledge of probability theory or any other mathematical field to understand the papers in this volume is not required.

Book Workload Characterization of Computer Systems and Computer Networks

Download or read book Workload Characterization of Computer Systems and Computer Networks written by Giuseppe Serazzi and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1986 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally recognized that the characteristics of workload processing requests are among those parameters that critically affect the behaviour of a computer system. Therefore, the quantitative description of the processing requests, i.e. the workload characterization, is of fundamental importance in all performance evaluation problems, and is indispensable in the design of useful workload models. Now, for the first time, all problems related to workload characterization and modeling have been gathered together and analyzed in one volume. This book presents both the basic principles and the state-of-the-art in workload characterization of computer systems and computer networks, with special emphasis on experimental aspects. The methodologies and techniques currently used to characterize workloads for performance evaluation studies (tuning, design, selection, and capacity planning) are all adequately described. Invited Lectures: Workload Characterization in Distributed Environments (A.K. Agrawala and A.K. Thareja). Characterizing the Time Varying Nature of TSO Workloads (H.P. Artis). Workload Characterization Using SAS PROC FASTCLUS (H.P. Artis).

Book The Fractal Structure of Data Reference

Download or read book The Fractal Structure of Data Reference written by Bruce McNutt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-11-24 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The architectural concept of a memory hierarchy has been immensely successful, making possible today's spectacular pace of technology evolution in both the volume of data and the speed of data access. Its success is difficult to understand, however, when examined within the traditional "memoryless" framework of performance analysis. The `memoryless' framework cannot properly reflect a memory hierarchy's ability to take advantage of patterns of data use that are transient. The Fractal Structure of Data Reference: Applications to the Memory Hierarchy both introduces, and justifies empirically, an alternative modeling framework in which arrivals are driven by a statistically self-similar underlying process, and are transient in nature. The substance of this book comes from the ability of the model to impose a mathematically tractable structure on important problems involving the operation and performance of a memory hierarchy. It describes events as they play out at a wide range of time scales, from the operation of file buffers and storage control cache, to a statistical view of entire disk storage applications. Striking insights are obtained about how memory hierarchies work, and how to exploit them to best advantage. The emphasis is on the practical application of such results. The Fractal Structure of Data Reference: Applications to the Memory Hierarchy will be of interest to professionals working in the area of applied computer performance and capacity planning, particularly those with a focus on disk storage. The book is also an excellent reference for those interested in database and data structure research.

Book Analyzing Computer System Performance with Perl PDQ

Download or read book Analyzing Computer System Performance with Perl PDQ written by Neil J. Gunther and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-30 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To solve performance problems in modern computing infrastructures, often comprising thousands of servers running hundreds of applications, spanning multiple tiers, you need tools that go beyond mere reporting. You need tools that enable performance analysis of application workflow across the entire enterprise. That's what PDQ (Pretty Damn Quick) provides. PDQ is an open-source performance analyzer based on the paradigm of queues. Queues are ubiquitous in every computing environment as buffers, and since any application architecture can be represented as a circuit of queueing delays, PDQ is a natural fit for analyzing system performance. Building on the success of the first edition, this considerably expanded second edition now comprises four parts. Part I contains the foundational concepts, as well as a new first chapter that explains the central role of queues in successful performance analysis. Part II provides the basics of queueing theory in a highly intelligible style for the non-mathematician; little more than high-school algebra being required. Part III presents many practical examples of how PDQ can be applied. The PDQ manual has been relegated to an appendix in Part IV, along with solutions to the exercises contained in each chapter. Throughout, the Perl code listings have been newly formatted to improve readability. The PDQ code and updates to the PDQ manual are available from the author's web site at www.perfdynamics.com
