Book excerpt: “Includes some of Lam’s most memorable writings, about cuisine, self-esteem, sex and kung fu, all seen from a two-hemisphere perspective.” —SFGate East Eats West shines new light on the bridges and crossroads where two global regions meld into one worldwide “immigrant nation.” In this new nation, with its amalgamation of divergent ideas, tastes, and styles, today’s bold fusion becomes tomorrow’s classic. But while the space between East and West continues to shrink in this age of globalization, some cultural gaps remain. In this collection of twenty-one personal essays, Andrew Lam, the award-winning author of Perfume Dreams, continues to explore the Vietnamese diaspora, this time concentrating not only on how the East and West have changed but how they are changing each other. Lively and engaging, East Eats West searches for meaning in nebulous territory charted by very few. Part memoir, part meditation, and part cultural anthropology, East Eats West is about thriving in the West with one foot still in the East. “In these lovely, wise, probing essays, Andrew Lam not only illuminates the crucial twenty-first-century issues of immigration and cultural identity but the greater, enduring issues of what it means to be human . . . a compelling book.” —Robert Olen Butler, Pulitzer Prize–winning author “Andrew Lam is an expert time-traveler, collapsing childhood and adulthood; years of war and peace; and the evolution of language in his own life, time, and mind. To read Andrew’s work is a joy and a profound journey.” —Farai Chideya, author of The Episodic Career “One of the best American essayists of his generation.” —Wayne Karlin, author of A Wolf by the Ears

Book The Relationship between Secondary School Student and Teacher in the Vietnamese Educational Setting

Download or read book The Relationship between Secondary School Student and Teacher in the Vietnamese Educational Setting written by Giap Binh Nga and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2020 in the subject Sociology - Children and Youth, grade: 1.5, Vietnam National University Hanoi, language: English, abstract: The interaction between secondary school students and teachers is a crucial factor influencing educational experiences and personal development. This study addresses a notable gap in existing literature by examining the cross-cultural validity of the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale (STRS) within the Vietnamese educational context. The quality of teacher-student relationships is widely acknowledged as pivotal for students' social-emotional, behavioral, and cognitive development. This research aims to investigate the dimensional structure of Closeness, Conflict, and Dependency within the adapted STRS in the unique cultural context of Vietnam. Several hypotheses are proposed, including the expected factorial validity of the survey as a measure of the relationship between secondary school students and teachers, significant differences in mean levels of Closeness, Conflict, and Dependency, correlations among latent factors of the STRS, a positive relationship between Dependency and Closeness, and the moderation of the effect of Dependency on Closeness by Conflict. Throughout the subsequent chapters, the literature, methodology, results, and discussion offer insights into the intricacies of teacher-student relationships within the Vietnamese educational context. The study contributes valuable perspectives to the international literature on teacher-student relationships, considering cross-cultural, statistical, and practical dimensions. The findings aim to provide guidance for improving these relationships in the educational setting.

Book What Should We Tell Our Children about Vietnam

Download or read book What Should We Tell Our Children about Vietnam written by Bill McCloud and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What should we tell our children about Vietnam?" That was the question facing junior high school teacher and Vietnam veteran Bill McCloud as he prepared to teach his students about the war. To find the answers, he went straight to the people who were involved in the war: soldiers, politicians, military officers, POWs, nurses, refugees, writers, and parents of soldiers who died in the war. He sent them handwritten letters, and responses poured in from all over the country. A collection of these responses, this book represents a unique and heartening outpouring of national conscience, hindsight, reflection, sorrow, and wisdom. Respondents included here are: George Bush, Jimmy Carter, Geraldine A Ferraro, Allen Ginsburg, Barry Goldwater, Tom Hayden, Henry Kissinger, Timothy Leary, Robert S. McNamara, George S. Patton, Oliver Stone, Gary Trudeau, Kurt Vonnegut, and Caspar W. Weinberger.

Book Growing Up American

Download or read book Growing Up American written by Min Zhou and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 1998-01-22 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnamese Americans form a unique segment of the new U.S. immigrant population. Uprooted from their homeland and often thrust into poor urban neighborhoods, these newcomers have nevertheless managed to establish strong communities in a short space of time. Most remarkably, their children often perform at high academic levels despite difficult circumstances. Growing Up American tells the story of Vietnamese children and sheds light on how they are negotiating the difficult passage into American society. Min Zhou and Carl Bankston draw on research and insights from many sources, including the U.S. census, survey data, and their own observations and in-depth interviews. Focusing on the Versailles Village enclave in New Orleans, one of many newly established Vietnamese communities in the United States, the authors examine the complex skein of family, community, and school influences that shape these children's lives. With no ties to existing ethnic communities, Vietnamese refugees had little control over where they were settled and no economic or social networks to plug into. Growing Up American describes the process of building communities that were not simply transplants but distinctive outgrowths of the environment in which the Vietnamese found themselves. Family and social organizations re-formed in new ways, blending economic necessity with cultural tradition. These reconstructed communities create a particular form of social capital that helps disadvantaged families overcome the problems associated with poverty and ghettoization. Outside these enclaves, Vietnamese children faced a daunting school experience due to language difficulties, racial inequality, deteriorating educational services, and exposure to an often adversarial youth subculture. How have the children of Vietnamese refugees managed to overcome these challenges? Growing Up American offers important evidence that community solidarity, cultural values, and a refugee sensibility have provided them with the resources needed to get ahead in American society. Zhou and Bankston also document the price exacted by the process of adaptation, as the struggle to define a personal identity and to decide what it means to be American sometimes leads children into conflict with their tight-knit communities. Growing Up American is the first comprehensive study of the unique experiences of Vietnamese immigrant children. It sets the agenda for future research on second generation immigrants and their entry into American society.
