Book Getting Citizens Involved

Download or read book Getting Citizens Involved written by Great Britain. National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2004 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The single Community Programme is a Government initiative which seeks to encourage local community participation in local policy-making across England and in the design of the public services they receive. The initiative is expected to cost around £182 million between the years 2001-2006 and targets the most deprived local authority districts in England. It seeks to ensure the representation of diverse community needs through the provision of grants to community groups involved in improving their neighbourhoods, and support for community empowerment networks that help communities influence local decision-making. The scheme has so far supported around 25,000 separate self-help and community projects, funded directly through local voluntary sector organisations. This report focuses on the effectiveness of the single Community Programme in encouraging communities to get involved in neighbourhood renewal and regeneration schemes, and seeks to identify broader lessons of relevance to community participation initiatives across the whole of government.

Book Helping people from workless households into work

Download or read book Helping people from workless households into work written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-07-19 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A workless household is defined as a household that includes at least one person of working-age (men aged 16-64 years and women aged 16-59 years) where no one in the household aged 16 or over is in employment. Currently, there are about three million households, containing 1.7 million children, who still have no-one in work. Evidence suggests that many adults in workless households would like to work, but that they face multiple barriers to work, such as low skills, disability, a lack of affordable and flexible childcare, or caring responsibilities and may have been on benefits for a long time. The NAO report examines the effectiveness of Department for Work and Pensions' employment programmes aimed at workless households in England, focusing on two programmes: the New Deal for Lone Parents and the New Deal for Partners. The report finds that these programmes are making a difference for those who take part, but more needs to be done to reach out to workless households and to increase awareness of the support available and help people to prepare for and find work.

Book The Pragmatics of Governmental Discourse

Download or read book The Pragmatics of Governmental Discourse written by Ayan-Yue Gupta and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-02 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a novel methodological framework for analysing governmental discourse. It involves combining pragmatist perspectives on language with computational sociolinguistics and large language models (LLMs). The first half discusses traditional critical approaches to investigating discursive practices, principally those employing Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and those based on methods developed by Michel Foucault. These are critiqued in terms of pragmatist views on meaning, which are rarely taken up in this area. It is argued that to understand the grounding of social structures and power relations in discourse, we must begin with a systematic account of how meaning is contextually fixed. It is proposed that a pragmatist reading of Foucault’s arguments about governmentality offers a productive framework for discourse analysis. To illustrate the advantages of this framework, the book presents a case study of the British government’s adoption of resilience, sustainability, and wellbeing discourses in the period 2000-2020. A dataset of 179 million tokens sampled from approximately 170,000 government documents is used to illustrate how this framework can be combined with natural language processing (NLP) to make robust inferences. This study will be of interest to both sociologists interested in language and in the methodological potential of recent developments in NLP. Importantly, the book demonstrates how LLMs can be harnessed to bring new perspectives to long-standing sociological questions.
