Book Robot Reliability and Safety

Download or read book Robot Reliability and Safety written by B.S. Dhillon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robots are increasingly being used in industry to perform various types of tasks. Some of the tasks performed by robots in industry are spot welding, materials handling, arc welding, and routing. The population of robots is growing at a significant rate in various parts of the world; for example, in 1984, a report published by the British Robot Association indicated a robot popula tion distribution between Japan (64,600), Western Europe (20,500), and the United States (13,000). This shows a significant number of robots in use. Data available for West Germany and the United Kingdom indicate that in 1977 there were 541 and 80 robots in use, respectively, and in 1984 these numbers went up to 6600 and 2623, respectively. Just as for other engineering products, the reliability and safety of robots are important. A robot has to be safe and reliable. An unreliable robot may become the cause of unsafe conditions, high maintenance costs, inconvenience, etc. Robots make use of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, electronic, and hydraulic parts. This makes their reliability problem a challenging task because of the many different sources of failures. According to some published literature, the best mean time between failures (MTBF) achieved by robots is only 2500 hours. This means there is definite room for further improvement in robot reliability. With respect to safety, there have been five fatal accidents involving robots since 1978.

Book Industrial robots and cobots

Download or read book Industrial robots and cobots written by Michał Gurgul and published by Michał Gurgul. This book was released on 2018-12-08 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the modern world, highly repetitive and tiresome tasks are being delegated to machines. The demand for industrial robots is growing not only because of the need to improve production efficiency and the quality of the end products, but also due to rising employment costs and a shortage of skilled professionals. The industrial robot market is projected to grow by 16% year-on-year in the immediate future. The industry’s progressing automation is increasing the demand for specialists who can operate robots. If you would like to join this sought-after and well-paid professional group, it’s time to learn how to operate and program robots using modern methods. This book provides all the information you will need to enter the industry without spending money on training or looking for someone willing to introduce you to the world of robotics. You will learn about all aspects of programming and implementing robots in a company. The book consists of four parts: general introduction to robotics for non-technical people; part two describes industry robotisation; part three depicts the principles and methods of programming robots; the final part touches upon the safety of industrial robots and cobots. Are you a student of a technical faculty, or even a manager of a plant who would like to robotise production? If you are interested in this subject, you won’t find a better book!

Book Work in the Age of Robots

Download or read book Work in the Age of Robots written by Mark P. Mills and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are robots finally replacing humans? Does the emerging age of artificial intelligence and automation mean we will soon see “peak jobs” and the need for a Universal Basic Income to support a widening swath of hapless citizens unsuited for employment in a primarily “knowledge” workforce? Improving productivity—reducing labor hours per unit of product or service—has been the hallmark of economic progress for centuries. But advances due to robots and AI, some say, will be fundamentally different because digital machines are ready to revolutionize the nature of work in nearly every sector, not just one or two. But the lessons of history and the realities of technologies suggest that, despite yet more disruption, the overall result will be net job gains and faster economic growth.

Book Advanced Human Robot Collaboration in Manufacturing

Download or read book Advanced Human Robot Collaboration in Manufacturing written by Lihui Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents state-of-the-art research, challenges and solutions in the area of human–robot collaboration (HRC) in manufacturing. It enables readers to better understand the dynamic behaviour of manufacturing processes, and gives more insight into on-demand adaptive control techniques for industrial robots. With increasing complexity and dynamism in today’s manufacturing practice, more precise, robust and practical approaches are needed to support real-time shop-floor operations. This book presents a collection of recent developments and innovations in this area, relying on a wide range of research efforts. The book is divided into five parts. The first part presents a broad-based review of the key areas of HRC, establishing a common ground of understanding in key aspects. Subsequent chapters focus on selected areas of HRC subject to intense recent interest. The second part discusses human safety within HRC. The third, fourth and fifth parts provide in-depth views of relevant methodologies and algorithms. Discussing dynamic planning and monitoring, adaptive control and multi-modal decision making, the latter parts facilitate a better understanding of HRC in real situations. The balance between scope and depth, and theory and applications, means this book appeals to a wide readership, including academic researchers, graduate students, practicing engineers, and those within a variety of roles in manufacturing sectors.

Book Robotics in Practice

Download or read book Robotics in Practice written by Joseph F. Engelberger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE REAL THING by Isaac Asimov Back in 1939, when I was still a teenager, I began to write (and publish) a series of stories about robots which, for the first time in science fiction, were pictured as having been deliberately engineered to do their job safely. They were not intended to be creaky Gothic menaces, nor outlets for mawkish sentiment. They were simply well-designed machines. Beginning in 1942, I crystallized this notion in what I called 'The Three Laws of Robotics' and, in 1950, nine of my robot stories were collected into a book, I, Robot. I did not at that time seriously believe that I would live to see robots in action and robotics becoming a booming industry .... Yet here we are, better yet, I am alive to see it. But then, why shouldn't they be with us? Robots fulfil an important role in industry. They do simple and repetitive jobs more steadily, more reliably, and more uncomplainingly than a human being could - or should. Does a robot displace a human being? Certainly, but he does so at a job that, simply because a robot can do it, is beneath the dignity of a human being; a job that is no more than mindless drudgery. Better and more human jobs can be found for human beings - and should.

Book Engineering Safety

Download or read book Engineering Safety written by B S Dhillon and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2003-03-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safety has become very important because each year a vast number of people die due to workplace and other accidents. For example, in the United States for the year 1996 as per the National Safety Council, there were 93,400 deaths and 20,700,000 disabling injuries due to workplace accidents, with a total loss of $121 billion. Today there are a large number of books available on safety, but to the best of the author's knowledge none covers both general and systems safety (i.e., at a significant depth) and application or specialized areas such as software safety, robot safety, health care safety, and maintenance safety. This book has been written to satisfy that vital need.
