Book Demography Analysis and Synthesis Four Volume Set

Download or read book Demography Analysis and Synthesis Four Volume Set written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-12-20 with total page 2857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This four-volume collection of over 140 original chapters covers virtually everything of interest to demographers, sociologists, and others. Over 100 authors present population subjects in ways that provoke thinking and lead to the creation of new perspectives, not just facts and equations to be memorized. The articles follow a theory-methods-applications approach and so offer a kind of "one-stop shop" that is well suited for students and professors who need non-technical summaries, such as political scientists, public affairs specialists, and others. Unlike shorter handbooks, Demography: Analysis and Synthesis offers a long overdue, thorough treatment of the field. Choosing the analytical method that fits the data and the situation requires insights that the authors and editors of Demography: Analysis and Synthesis have explored and developed. This extended examination of demographic tools not only seeks to explain the analytical tools themselves, but also the relationships between general population dynamics and their natural, economic, social, political, and cultural environments. Limiting themselves to human populations only, the authors and editors cover subjects that range from the core building blocks of population change--fertility, mortality, and migration--to the consequences of demographic changes in the biological and health fields, population theories and doctrines, observation systems, and the teaching of demography. The international perspectives brought to these subjects is vital for those who want an unbiased, rounded overview of these complex, multifaceted subjects. Topics to be covered: * Population Dynamics and the Relationship Between Population Growth and Structure * The Determinants of Fertility * The Determinants of Mortality * The Determinants of Migration * Historical and Geographical Determinants of Population * The Effects of Population on Health, Economics, Culture, and the Environment * Population Policies * Data Collection Methods and Teaching about Population Studies * All chapters share a common format * Each chapter features several cross-references to other chapters * Tables, charts, and other non-text features are widespread * Each chapter contains at least 30 bibliographic citations

This book was released on 1998 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the product of a UN Population Division study of the sex differentials in infant, child, and under-five mortality and the specific mechanisms that may lead to excess female mortality in childhood. It consists of 10 chapters "that explore a broad range of mechanisms, ranging from the biological to the social and economic, that influence sex differentials in childhood mortality. The mechanisms considered affect mortality differentials either directly, as in the case of the nutritional status of boys and girls or the differential use of health care by sex of child, or indirectly, as in the case of maternal education and decisions regarding the intra-household allocation of resources. The study also provides a historical account of the evolution of the sex differentials in childhood mortality in today's developed countries during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Another major contribution is its measurement and analysis of the levels and trends of infant, child and under-five mortality for boys and girls during the 1970s and 1980s. Such analysis allows the identification of the countries and regions in which girls have a survival disadvantage compared to boys, and permits an objective assessment of the magnitude and extent of excess female mortality in childhood." Book Power and Decision

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 366 pages

Download or read book Power and Decision written by Gita Sen and published by Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies. This book was released on 1994 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together feminist social and biomedical scholars from the Southern and Northern hemispheres to examine the aggregate forces that affect reproductive choice. Drawing on numerous case studies, this book examines the range of social, economic, and scientific policies which collectively impact on reproductive well being. Power and Decision offers an analysis of how disparate policies, seemingly unrelated to reproduction, are implicitly "pro-natalist" or "anti-natalist." Moreover, these policies are imbued with gender, race, and class biases. The authors examine the reproductive impact of welfare and parental leave legislation, health services, adoption policies, biomedical research, the global transfer and regulation of reproductive technologies, and international family planning programs. Offering a rare global feminist critique of social policy, this volume makes explicit the direction of current legislative, economic, and scientific trends, providing a basis for discussion, debate, and possible redress.

Book World Development Report 2019

Download or read book World Development Report 2019 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work is constantly reshaped by technological progress. New ways of production are adopted, markets expand, and societies evolve. But some changes provoke more attention than others, in part due to the vast uncertainty involved in making predictions about the future. The 2019 World Development Report will study how the nature of work is changing as a result of advances in technology today. Technological progress disrupts existing systems. A new social contract is needed to smooth the transition and guard against rising inequality. Significant investments in human capital throughout a person’s lifecycle are vital to this effort. If workers are to stay competitive against machines they need to train or retool existing skills. A social protection system that includes a minimum basic level of protection for workers and citizens can complement new forms of employment. Improved private sector policies to encourage startup activity and competition can help countries compete in the digital age. Governments also need to ensure that firms pay their fair share of taxes, in part to fund this new social contract. The 2019 World Development Report presents an analysis of these issues based upon the available evidence.

Book The Effects of Education on Fertility and Mortality and the Effects of Education and Urbanization on Fertility

Download or read book The Effects of Education on Fertility and Mortality and the Effects of Education and Urbanization on Fertility written by World Bank. Education and Training Department and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the effects of education on fertility and mortality. It states that the higher the level of the parents' education, the lower the mortality of their children. The effect of education on fertility is somewhat more complicated. While fertility decreases uniformly with education in some environments, in other situations there appears to be a threshold level of education and only at levels beyond primary school does fertility decrease with an increase in education.
