Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Americans experience some degree of hearing loss. The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates programs that provide cash disability benefits to people with permanent impairments like hearing loss, if they can show that their impairments meet stringent SSA criteria and their earnings are below an SSA threshold. The National Research Council convened an expert committee at the request of the SSA to study the issues related to disability determination for people with hearing loss. This volume is the product of that study. Hearing Loss: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits reviews current knowledge about hearing loss and its measurement and treatment, and provides an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the current processes and criteria. It recommends changes to strengthen the disability determination process and ensure its reliability and fairness. The book addresses criteria for selection of pure tone and speech tests, guidelines for test administration, testing of hearing in noise, special issues related to testing children, and the difficulty of predicting work capacity from clinical hearing test results. It should be useful to audiologists, otolaryngologists, disability advocates, and others who are concerned with people who have hearing loss.

Download or read book Effective Communication with People Who Have Hearing Difficulties written by Jill Mansfield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One in seven people in the UK are said to be deaf or hard of hearing. Too often, clients are put off attending centres or have had bad experiences of services and communicating with care or teaching staff. Working through the sessions in this book will enable the reader to understand how to communicate effectively, how to treat individuals with respect and dignity in all types of settings, and how to encourage positive communication with people who have hearing difficulties. The author has used her own experience of deafness to convey the effects it can have on individuals and to give insight into how people with hearing difficulties like to communicate and be treated. Divided into twenty sessions for group training, individuals can also work through the book on their own. The information, exercises, and case studies in this book will provide the reader with the awareness and knowledge to communicate effectively with people who have hearing difficulties. Featuring many cartoon-style illustrations, this photocopiable manual is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with people who have hearing problems.
