Book excerpt: This paper attempts to develop quantitative benchmarks at the firm and the industry level, so as to evaluate the working capital management performance of Corporate India from time to time. An earlier attempt was made by Anand (2001) based on the methodology designed by the CFO Europe and REL Consultancy Group for the year 1996-97. In another attempt, Anand and Gupta (2003) experimented with a number of parameters and different weights in the overall score to have a better picture of working capital management performance of Corporate India. The study employs the methodology developed by Anand and Gupta (2003) and provides estimates by using the data of 339 Samp;P CNX 500 nonfinancial companies with at least three years of publicly available records over the period 2001-02 to 2003-04 for each company and industry. During the period of study, Corporate India has achieved a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 26.3% in net sales and 1.6% in the three-year average cash operating margins. The length of the operating cycle and cash conversion cycle has reduced by 10.2% and 12.7% respectively on compounded annual basis. The paper finds very little evidence on the positive relationship between working capital management and firm profitability. The findings of the paper capture the dynamics of risk-return trade-off, which will help the performance evaluation of working capital management of Corporate India.

Book excerpt: The present study is in continuation of our earlier attempt of developing quantitative benchmarks at the firm as well as at the industry level to evaluate Working Capital Management Performance of Corporate India from time to time. The previous attempt was based on the methodology designed by CFO Europe Magazine and REL Consultancy Group in their first Working Capital Survey of 1997. This time we experimented with a number of new parameters and different weights in the overall score to have better picture of working capital management performance of Corporate India. Finally, we selected three financial parameters for this purpose - CCE, DOC and DWC. The present study provides their estimates by using data of 427 companies over the period 1998-99 to 2000-01 for each company and for each industry. It is believed that the presence of these three in the overall working capital performance criterion not only helps in performance evaluation but also will capture the dynamics of risk-return trade off.

Book Working Capital Management Practices

Download or read book Working Capital Management Practices written by Ashok Panigrahi and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working capital management plays a significant role in improved profitability of firms. Firms can achieve optimal management of working capital by making the trade-off between profitability and liquidity. The studies on working capital management generally states that for the improvement in profitability we should manage our working capital effectively and most of the studies recommended to have good amount of working capital in the organization. All the researches on this topic conclude that the companies should avoid under-investment in working capital if they want higher profit margins. With negative working capital there can be a danger of insolvency but it is not true forever. We have seen companies generating good profit with a negative working capital as well as companies not able to generate good profit even with having good amount of positive working capital. Hence, the question arises that having negative working capital is good for an organization or not and if a company is earning profit continuously with having negative working capital, can we say that it is a sign of managerial efficiency or there might be the chances of possible bankruptcy of the company? This book is a compilation of few selected studies on the working capital management practices of Indian corporate and in many cases the findings of these studies are not in line with the results of the previous researches in this area, which raises a question mark on the traditional styles of working capital management practices and also induces the finance managers to think whether there can be a new and better approach to working capital management practices.

Book excerpt: In order to better understand working capital management, which includes efficient handling of current assets as well as current liabilities. Efficient management of working capital is a precondition for the success of any kind of firm. The initial study's major goal was to assess the efficiency of working capital management in the automobile industry. The present study deals with the efficiency of working capital management in the selected four-wheeler passenger car manufacturing companies in India. The source of secondary data is the annual report and CMIE Prowess. The database of ten passenger car manufacturing companies in India is drawn at random from the source Statista based on their market share and brand in terms of passenger car manufacturing companies for the 10-year period from 2011-12 to 2020-21. This study employed three parameters to assess the efficiency of working capital management: the performance index of working capital management (PI), the utilisation index of working capital management (UI), and the efficiency index of working capital management (EI). following the model suggested by Bhattacharya (1997). This study's results show most of the companies reviewed did well in terms of working capital performance, current asset usage, and working capital efficiency. Some selected passenger car manufacturers have efficiently managed their working capital and increased sales with existing assets. Companies with a low or negative efficiency index must use current assets efficiently to manage working capital.

Book WORKING CAPITAL MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES Fourth Edition

Download or read book WORKING CAPITAL MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES Fourth Edition written by BHATTACHARYA, HRISHIKES and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working capital is commonly understood as the fund needed to meet the day-to-day expenses of an enterprise. A finance manager finds that the funds for meeting these expenses get blocked in current assets. He, therefore, looks for liquidity support in net working capital (NWC), which is equivalent to the excess of current assets over current liabilities. A banker also looks at the size of NWC as the long-term stake of the business in funding the current assets. But for a production manager, liquidity is synonymous to uninterrupted supply of material inputs to the production lines. Similarly, for a marketing manager, if there is no production, his marketing outlets dry up despite demand in the market. While the finance manager discourages overstocking of inventory, the production manager and the marketing manager dread of being out of stock. In this conflict the goal of the organisation often takes a back seat. This book aims at resolving these conflicts by adopting a techno-financial approach to working capital management. In the previous edition a full chapter on Service Business: Risk Analysis and Working Capital Assessment was introduced to understand the nature of service business and the risks associated with it followed by developing a model for assessment of working capital requirement. Whereas, in the Fourth Edition, a new chapter on Technological Progress, Innovations and Startups—A New Financing Methodology has been introduced to fill a long-felt gap in financing of emerging industries. Besides, the book is revised and updated extensively by incorporating the current researches in the field; particular mention can be made of Cash pooling system, Bullwhip effect and newer approaches to inventory recording system. Throughout the book, every concept is presented with worked-out examples and case studies for easy comprehension of the subject. The book is primarily addressed to postgraduate students majoring in Finance and to those pursuing professional courses in Accounts (CA) and Cost Accounting (ICWA). The book will also be very useful for practising finance executives, risk managers and also purchase/materials managers. TARGET AUDIENCE o MBA (Finance) o CA and ICWA Aspirants
