Book excerpt: To identify the core elements of effective ergonomics programs, a literature review was conducted and experts in the business labor and academic communities interviewed. Case studies were conducted at selected facilites of five employers, interviewing pertinent program officials and obtaining program and results data. Pertinent officials were also interviewed and information about current activities from OSHA and selected states that operate their own OSHA programs obtained. Effective ergonomic programs must have the following core set of elements to ensure that ergonomic hazards are identified and controlled to protect workers: management commitment, employee involvement, identification of problem jobs, development of solutions (that is, controls) for problem jobs, training and education for employees and appropriate medical management. The work revealed that positive results can be achieved through an approach incorporating these core elements that are implemented in a simple, informal, site-specific manner

Book excerpt: Private sector employers spend about $60 billion each year on workers' compensation claims associated with musculosketal disorders, which involve illnesses and injuries linked to repetitive stress or sustained exertion on the body. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has tried to develop a workplace standard that would require employers to reduce ergonomic hazards in the workplace. A draft standard that OSHA circulated for comment in 1995 generated stiff opposition from many employers because they believed that it required an unreasonable level of effort to address ergonomic issues. Since then, Congress has limited OSHA's ability to issue a proposed or final ergonomic standard. GAO found that employers can reduce the costs and injuries associated with ergonomic hazards, thereby improving employees' health and morale as well as productivity and product quality, through simple, flexible approaches that are neither costly nor complicated. Effective ergonomics programs share certain core elements: management commitment, employee involvement, identification of problem jobs, development of solutions, training and education of employees, and appropriate medical management. OSHA may wish to consider a framework for a worksite ergonomics program that gives employers the flexibility to introduce site-specific efforts and the discretion to determine the appropriate level of effort to make, as long as the effort effectively addresses the hazards.

Book Handbook of Complex Occupational Disability Claims

Download or read book Handbook of Complex Occupational Disability Claims written by Izabela Z. Schultz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-14 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic back and neck pain. Whiplash. Fibromyalgia. Carpal tunnel syndrome. Intractable headaches. Depression. Anxiety and posttraumatic stress. Concussion. More than ever, the term workplace disabilities is synonymous with greater clinical and case management complexity and escalating personal, social, occupational and economic cost. Complex illnesses and injuries that defy a traditional medical management model continue to baffle medical, mental health, rehabilitation, compensation, corporate, and legal professionals despite new advances in diagnosis, prevention, and rehabilitation. The Handbook of Complex Occupational Disability Claims: Early Risk Identification, Intervention and Prevention cuts through the confusion by integrating current theories and findings into a state-of-the-art tool for critical thinking, decision making, and effective practice. A book that synthesizes so many diverse viewpoints has the potential to influence both policy and practice across disciplines and cut through politicization of these still poorly understood conditions with evidence. The Handbook is important reading for all clinicians, professionals, and members of rehabilitation and disability management teams, across healthcare, occupational and compensation settings.
