Book Bridge to College Mathematics

Download or read book Bridge to College Mathematics written by Manuel Sanders and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contents: A workbook containing 30 days of basic review exercises for bridging the gap between high school math and college work. Each daily section contains a short exercise set covering basic skills necessary to perform well in an introductory college mathematics course. Focus has been placed on those skills learned by students in high school which are difficult to retain without continued practice and result in less-than-adequate performance in introductory college mathematics courses. The exercise collection in Part I is designed for skill enhancement in basic mathematics skills such as factoring, solving equations, understanding and using function notation, working with exponents and radicals, etc. Rather than being all-inclusive, the work strives to provide continued practice in the most fundamental skills necessary for successful college work. Daily work notes are provided in Part II that speak directly to the pertinent aspects of each day's exercise set. The directions, review notes, and hints provide guidance in areas where students frequently require a brief refresher. Brief and to the point, with examples when needed for clarity, these work notes add an extra dimension to help students stay on track and progress through the exercise sets. Part III contains a complete answer set. Written by a Professor of Mathematics who has taught thousands of students introductory and advanced mathematics, this workbook provides a cost-effective self-study approach to help bridge the gap between high school and college math. With the resources necessary for students to stay current and be prepared to "hit the ground running" when entering college, it is an approach worthy of consideration to help you or your child realize a successful start to a college career. With the costs of college overwhelming for many students and families, being prepared and on track to graduate on time must be a goal for all families and students. This workbook is a great tool to utilize toward this end.

Book Mathematical Bridge A An Intuitive Journey In Higher Mathematics 2nd Edition

Download or read book Mathematical Bridge A An Intuitive Journey In Higher Mathematics 2nd Edition written by Stephen Fletcher Hewson and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2009-01-20 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although higher mathematics is beautiful, natural and interconnected, to the uninitiated it can feel like an arbitrary mass of disconnected technical definitions, symbols, theorems and methods. An intellectual gulf needs to be crossed before a true, deep appreciation of mathematics can develop. This book bridges this mathematical gap. It focuses on the process of discovery as much as the content, leading the reader to a clear, intuitive understanding of how and why mathematics exists in the way it does. The narrative does not evolve along traditional subject lines: each topic develops from its simplest, intuitive starting point; complexity develops naturally via questions and extensions. Throughout, the book includes levels of explanation, discussion and passion rarely seen in traditional textbooks. The choice of material is similarly rich, ranging from number theory and the nature of mathematical thought to quantum mechanics and the history of mathematics. It rounds off with a selection of thought-provoking and stimulating exercises for the reader.

Book Bridge to Abstract Mathematics

Download or read book Bridge to Abstract Mathematics written by Ralph W. Oberste-Vorth and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2012 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Bridge to Abstract Mathematics will prepare the mathematical novice to explore the universe of abstract mathematics. Mathematics is a science that concerns theorems that must be proved within the constraints of a logical system of axioms and definitions rather than theories that must be tested, revised, and retested. Readers will learn how to read mathematics beyond popular computational calculus courses. Moreover, readers will learn how to construct their own proofs. The book is intended as the primary text for an introductory course in proving theorems, as well as for self-study or as a reference. Throughout the text, some pieces (usually proofs) are left as exercises. Part V gives hints to help students find good approaches to the exercises. Part I introduces the language of mathematics and the methods of proof. The mathematical content of Parts II through IV were chosen so as not to seriously overlap the standard mathematics major. In Part II, students study sets, functions, equivalence and order relations, and cardinality. Part III concerns algebra. The goal is to prove that the real numbers form the unique, up to isomorphism, ordered field with the least upper bound. In the process, we construct the real numbers starting with the natural numbers. Students will be prepared for an abstract linear algebra or modern algebra course. Part IV studies analysis. Continuity and differentiation are considered in the context of time scales (nonempty, closed subsets of the real numbers). Students will be prepared for advanced calculus and general topology courses. There is a lot of room for instructors to skip and choose topics from among those that are presented.

Part III contains a complete answer set. College students and their parents frequently discover that lack of college mathematical readiness requires an extra semester or even a year of college in order to earn a desired degree. A trend at colleges to attempt to remedy this situation is to offer on-campus "summer bridge" or "math boot camp" programs for entering students to alleviate this shortcoming. While effective, these programs are time-consuming and prohibitively costly for many students. In a similarly-designed approach, this workbook provides a cost-effective, self-study method to help students to stay current in mathematics and be prepared to "hit the ground running" when entering college. It is a worthy approach to help you or your child realize a successful start to a college career.

Download or read book Math Lit written by Kathleen Almy and published by Pearson. This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is not simply a repetition of the math you had in high school. Instead, it has been written to prepare you for success in your next mathematics course, such as statistics or quantitative literacy. While Math Lit: A Pathway to College Mathematics, Third Edition does include the algebra you will need to be successful in a follow-up course, it should be immediately apparent that this is not an algebra book. Instead, the focus is on solving realistic problems, gaining number sense, and building mathematical literacy. Algebra is a tool that we use when needed, but it is not the focus of the book. When we study algebraic ideas, our goal will be to understand how and when to use those ideas. The overall structure of the book will be very familiar to long-term users. The four cycles and their content are largely intact, although a new Cycle 0 has been added to address the review of prealgebra content. The main changes to this edition have been made at the section level, where we have improved flow and consistency across sections as detailed below. In some sections, development of certain topics was expanded for better clarity while development of others was condensed for improved flow. Nearly all content from the second edition is included in the third edition, but many contexts, topics, and problems have been updated to reflect current events"--
