Book Work Won t Love You Back

Download or read book Work Won t Love You Back written by Sarah Jaffe and published by Bold Type Books. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deeply-reported examination of why "doing what you love" is a recipe for exploitation, creating a new tyranny of work in which we cheerily acquiesce to doing jobs that take over our lives. You're told that if you "do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life." Whether it's working for "exposure" and "experience," or enduring poor treatment in the name of "being part of the family," all employees are pushed to make sacrifices for the privilege of being able to do what we love. In Work Won't Love You Back, Sarah Jaffe, a preeminent voice on labor, inequality, and social movements, examines this "labor of love" myth—the idea that certain work is not really work, and therefore should be done out of passion instead of pay. Told through the lives and experiences of workers in various industries—from the unpaid intern, to the overworked teacher, to the nonprofit worker and even the professional athlete—Jaffe reveals how all of us have been tricked into buying into a new tyranny of work. As Jaffe argues, understanding the trap of the labor of love will empower us to work less and demand what our work is worth. And once freed from those binds, we can finally figure out what actually gives us joy, pleasure, and satisfaction.

Download or read book The Church Must Die written by Dave Kirby and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns--broken cisterns that can hold no water. Jeremiah 2:13 The modern church, to its very core, is wrong. It is not what it was supposed to be. Today church is a "thing"...it's an organization, a building, an institution...something never intended by Christ. In the early church the power of the Holy Spirit operated in abundance and the world was changed. Over the 2000 years since, we have traded the glory of God for an institution, traded His power for our own, and traded His church for a sad counterfeit. It's time to wake up and see ourselves for what we've become. This is not a revolution, not even a revival. This is a breaking. This is death to all we have become, that we might return to what is real.

Book Male s Health in the Objective of Stressology Beyond the Usual

Download or read book Male s Health in the Objective of Stressology Beyond the Usual written by Армен Мурадян and published by Litres. This book was released on 2022-05-15 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book “Male’s health in the objective of stressology – beyond the usual” is an example of talented scientific-educational work, interesting, trustworthy and useful to doctors, psychologists, students, and what is more – to a wide range of readers interested in their own mental problems.Psychological traumas and disappointments, accumulating, entail a discord between feelings, mind and body. We lose a sense of inner integrity, peace in the soul, freshness of feelings and can no longer admire childishly a flower, the sky and their colors, appreciate simple joys of life. As a result, with age, we increasingly feel the tragedy of existence; we plunge into sufferings or into “appraisal experience of life” which substitutes for us the joy of a truly sensual perception and experience of reality. We are inclined to ponder on life rather than live, regretting our own losses. This is the concept of life formed in the human mind during the long years of life of mankind on the earth. The proposed monograph destroys this stereotype. The book is distinguished by substantiation and novelty of the view on a number of key problems of psychic and somatic pathology, imbued with the spirit of scientific optimism and humanism. This is a thoughtful and considerate invitation to a reader to think about a complex system called human-male. The main attention in the publication is devoted to stress and how stress is combined with biological factors of the male body, creating a fine border between pathology and borders of the norm. Authors in their analyses and observations smoothly integrate biology and psychology. The theme of human sexuality, touched on by the authors, is also important. Undoubtedly, human sexuality is itself an interesting subject because it includes a whole range of preferences and complex forms of behavior, especially in men. The book is written by proficient specialists, at the same time it is easy to read since it is addressed to a wide readership.

Book Renegade Hero or Faux Rogue

Download or read book Renegade Hero or Faux Rogue written by Ashley M. Donnelly and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the presence of the anti-hero in mainstream dramatic serial television. It offers critical examinations of Dexter, Sons of Anarchy, True Blood, Breaking Bad, and Boardwalk Empire. What purpose might such unusual protagonists serve in today's culture and what do their tales tell about U.S. political and economic issues from 2008 to 2012? The author discovers how the characters that seem initially so different prove to be strong examplars of established forms of power, such as white patriarchy and late capitalist interests. The study finds that even when the characters are groundbreaking fictional figures, they are all eventually written into submission by the narratives of their series, echoing the same tales of fictitious heroism recycled in American television narratives for decades. New trends in television narratives are discussed--with the expectation that perhaps future dramas will free audiences from oppressive narratives rather than continue to normalize them.

Book Stay and Fight

    Book Details:
  • Author : Madeline ffitch

  • ISBN : 0374719713
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Stay and Fight written by Madeline ffitch and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Like Bastard Out of Carolina, ffitch's electrifying debut novel is a paean to independence and a protest against the materialism of our age." —O: The Oprah Magazine "Delightfully raucous." —Sam Sacks, The Wall Street Journal Helen arrives in Appalachian Ohio full of love and her boyfriend’s ideas for living off the land. Too soon, with winter coming, he calls it quits. Helped by Rudy—her government-questioning, wisdom-spouting, seasonal-affective-disordered boss—and a neighbor couple, Helen makes it to spring. Those neighbors, Karen and Lily, are awaiting the arrival of their first child, a boy, which means their time at the Women’s Land Trust must end. So Helen invites the new family to throw in with her—they’ll split the work and the food, build a house, and make a life that sustains them, if barely, for years. Then young Perley decides he wants to go to school. And Rudy sets up a fruit-tree nursery on the pipeline easement edging their land. The outside world is brought clamoring into their makeshift family. Set in a region known for its independent spirit, Stay and Fight shakes up what it means to be a family, to live well, to make peace with nature and make deals with the system. It is a protest novel that challenges our notions of effective action. It is a family novel that refuses to limit the term. And it is a marvel of storytelling that both breaks with tradition and celebrates it. Best of all, it is full of flawed, cantankerous, flesh-and-blood characters who remind us that conflict isn't the end of love, but the real beginning. Absorbingly spun, perfectly voiced, and disruptively political, Madeline ffitch's Stay and Fight forces us to reimagine an Appalachia—and an America—we think we know. And it takes us, laughing and fighting, into a new understanding of what it means to love and to be free.

Book Religion and Film

    Book Details:
  • Author : S. Brent Plate
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2017-09-05
  • ISBN : 0231545797
  • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book Religion and Film written by S. Brent Plate and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion and cinema share a capacity for world making, ritualizing, mythologizing, and creating sacred time and space. Through cinematography, mise-en-scène, editing, and other production activities, film takes the world “out there” and refashions it. Religion achieves similar ends by setting apart particular objects and periods of time, telling stories, and gathering people together for communal actions and concentrated focus. The result of both cinema and religious practice is a re-created world: a world of fantasy, a world of ideology, a world we long to live in, or a world we wish to avoid at all costs. Religion and Film introduces readers to both religious studies and film studies by focusing on the formal similarities between cinema and religious practices and on the ways they each re-create the world. Explorations of film show how the cinematic experience relies on similar aesthetic devices on which religious rituals have long relied: sight, sound, the taste of food, the body, and communal experience. Meanwhile, a deeper understanding of the aesthetic nature of religious rituals can alter our understanding of film production. Utilizing terminology and theoretical insights from the study of religion as well as the study of film, Religion and Film shows that by paying attention to the ways films are constructed, we can shed new light on the ways religious myths and rituals are constructed and vice versa. This thoroughly revised and expanded new edition is designed to appeal to the needs of courses in religion as well as film departments. In addition to two new chapters, this edition has been restructured into three distinct sections that offer students and instructors theories and methods for thinking about cinema in ways that more fully connect film studies with religious studies.
