Book Crafting Qualitative Research Working in the Postpositivist Traditions

Download or read book Crafting Qualitative Research Working in the Postpositivist Traditions written by Pushkala Prasad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Courses in management research have traditionally focused on quantitative techniques, and no available text adequately covers the many different perspectives within the qualitative model or shows which qualitative techniques work best in different settings. "Crafting Qualitative Research" fills this need. In clear and readable prose, this comprehensive text offers a detailed guide to the rich diversity of qualitative research traditions, with examples and applications specifically designed for the field of management. Each of the book's four main sections includes a descriptive "tree" diagram that lays out the historical origins of that section's traditions. Each chapter is devoted to a specific methodology and includes historical origins and development; techniques and applications; current controversies and emerging issues; and a summary box highlighting that method's utility. With its detailed and easy-to-understand coverage, this will be the text of choice for any instructor who wants to include the qualitative approach in a research methods course, as well as a useful resource for anyone doing research in the post-positivist traditions.

Book Organizations Markets and Imperial Formations

Download or read book Organizations Markets and Imperial Formations written by Subhabrata Bobby Banerjee and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection is an extraordinarily welcome text for those of us teaching international management in the US while observing with dismay the lack of critical awareness about the rest of the world in extant disciplinary scholarship. Rather than giving us the view from the rest , the collection advances a temporal and spatial relational approach to understanding globalization and compels its audience to bridge the gap between the west and the rest by bringing to visibility the cultural and material encounters co-constructing them. In this context, the various contributions deconstruct international management as market-based activity, exposing its mode of existence within complex power relations networks extending over time and space. Marta B. Calás, University of Massachusetts, US Organizations, Markets and Imperial Formations offers a set of innovative critiques of contemporary economic globalization. A major theme of the book is that our imperialist histories have resulted in a globalization process that replicates exploitative colonialist patterns. Chapter authors provide insights on a variety of subjects, including a critique of mainstream international management textbooks and the simplistic toolkits they offer to managers; an analysis of how a universalistic view of capitalism and economic organization results in exploitative patterns of resource appropriation; and documentation of the negative consequences of globalization, specifically, patterns of inequality and class segregation. Alison M. Konrad, University of Western Ontario, Canada This authoritative book explores the nexus between organization theory, globalization and imperialism and examines the effects of a global order organized around development and markets. The authors explore how interconnections between organization theory and the global political economy have led to the perpetuation of inequality and active reconfigurations of life, labour and the economy. They contend that cultural ethnocentrism and Western ideologies of development continue to inform the field of organizational studies and offer an alternate mode of theorizing. Through theoretical and empirical reflections, the authors produce a patchwork quilt of innovatively critical approaches to globalization. Graduate students, academics and scholars in the fields of management and organizational sciences, as well as postcolonial, development and globalization studies will find this book of particular interest. It is also an invaluable read for international management and strategy scholars, including those focused on multinational operations in the Third World.

Book Computing Myths Class Realities

Download or read book Computing Myths Class Realities written by David Hakken and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of computing in an economically transforming city in the north of England looks at how new information technologies effect and are affected by a historically vibrant working-class culture. Stressing the complex interplay between technology and culture, especially notions about work and labor, the authors examine how this dynamic is manifest in computer-related jobs, in social relationships, and in the reproduction of local culture. They analyze the structure of computing in Sheffield, placing it in the contexts of national state policy, world political economy, and the regional labor market, and they explore the processes of computing in relation to the reproduction of gendering, the rise of "labor freedom," and local attempts to influence the course of computerization. The experiences of the people in Sheffield and South Yorkshire have much to teach us about what technology does and what we can do to control it. Computing Myths, Class Realities will be of interest not only to anthropologists and sociologists but to all scholars interested in the social correlates of computing.

Book Information Technology and the World of Work

Download or read book Information Technology and the World of Work written by Daphne Gottlieb Taras and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information technologies have become both a means and an end, transforming the workplace and how work is performed. This ongoing evolution in the work process has received extensive coverage but relatively little attention has been given to how changing technologies and work practices affect the workers themselves. This volume specifically examines the institutional and social environment of the workplaces that information technologies have created. Compilations of scholarly essays are often written by members of a particular school of thought, whose purpose is to flesh out an area of theory or methodology. Information Technology and the World of Work takes a different approach: these essays are written by diverse voices, unified in their interest in the common theme of technology and the changing workplace. The authors' goals are to present perspectives that raise as many questions as they answer, and which are accessible to a broad audience of managers, union leaders, students, and academic readers. The chapters are organized into three specific topical areas that represent aspects of workers' social and political experiences of work that are affected by technology. Part 1 addresses how information technologies affect workers' unions. Part 2 examines how information technology affects individual employees, specifically in terms of employees' sense of power and identity. Chapters in this section examine the social and psychological reactions of workers within the system. Part 3 focuses on one of the most contentious outcomes of this changed workplace, reviewing emerging policy and privacy issues that new technologies have created. Written with the intent of beginning an important discussion of these issues, this volume should provide an impetus for others to make their own contribution to the emerging dialogue on technology in the modern workplace. Daphne G. Taras is professor of industrial relations and associate dean (research) in the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. James T. Bennett is professor of economics at George Mason University, and founder and editor of the Journal of Labor Research. Anthony M. Townsend is an associate professor of management information systems in the College of Business at Iowa State University, and on the faculty of Iowa State University Industrial Relations Center.

Book Computerized Symbolic Manipulation in Mechanics

Download or read book Computerized Symbolic Manipulation in Mechanics written by Edwin Kreuzer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present important software tools, basic concepts, methods, and highly sophisticated applications of computerized symbolic manipulation to mechanics problems. An overview about general-purpose symbolic software is followed by general guidelines how to develop and implement high-quality computer algebra code. The theoretical background including modeling techniques for mechanical systems is provided which allows for the computer aided generation of the symbolic equation of motion for multibody systems. It is shown how the governing equations for different types of problems in structural mechanics can be automatically derived and how to implement finite element techniques via computer algebra software. Perturbation methods as a very powerful approach for nonlinear problems are discussed in detail and are demonstrated for a number of applications. The applications covered in this book represent some of the most advanced topics in the rapidly growing field of research on symbolic computation.
