Book The vital soul

Download or read book The vital soul written by Uta Reinicke and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The Genesis of Doctrine written by Alister E. McGrath and published by Regent College Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alister E. McGrath begins his book by critically engaging the views of George Lindbeck on doctrine before moving on to present a fresh understanding of the nature and function of Christian doctrine within the church. Particular attention is paid to the way in which doctrine acts as a demarcator between communities of faith, providing important insights into contemporary ecumenical debates. McGrath also explores the crucial issue of the authority of the past in Christian theology, focusing especially on how doctrine serves to maintain continuity within the Christian tradition. The Genesis of Doctrine represents an exploration of a "middle way" in relation to the significance of Christian doctrine, rejecting both those approaches that insist on the uncritical repetition of the doctrinal heritage of the past and those that disallow the authority of past doctrinal formulations. The book concludes by considering whether doctrine has a future within the church, answering this question in the affirmative on the basis of a number of important theological and cultural considerations. Product Description: Explores the crucial issue of the authority of the past in Christian theology, focusing especially on how doctrine serves to maintain continuity within the Christian tradition.

Book Masculinity and Spirituality in Victorian Culture

Download or read book Masculinity and Spirituality in Victorian Culture written by Andrew Bradstock and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-10-04 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its specially-commissioned fourteen chapters, this important book discusses an impressively wide range of issues around the theme of male spirituality in the nineteenth century, drawing from history, cultural studies, art history and literary criticism. Topics explored include: ideological and iconographical representations of masculinity across the major Christian denominations; militarism and hymnody; male homosexuality and homoeroticism. The book is not afraid to explore controversial areas, nor to go beyond the generally acknowledged 'canon' of prescribers of gender identity: it includes, for example, leading nonconformist figures like William Booth and Charles Haddon Spurgeon, and early gay writers like John Addington Symonds.

Book Wordsworth s Ethics

Download or read book Wordsworth s Ethics written by Adam Potkay and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive examination that breathes new life into Wordsworth and the ethical concerns that were vital to his nineteenth-century readers. Why read Wordsworth’s poetry—indeed, why read poetry at all? Beyond any pleasure it might give, can it make one a better or more flourishing person? These questions were never far from William Wordsworth’s thoughts. He responded in rich and varied ways, in verse and in prose, in both well-known and more obscure writings. Wordsworth's Ethics is a comprehensive examination of the Romantic poet’s work, delving into his desire to understand the source and scope of our ethical obligations. Adam Potkay finds that Wordsworth consistently rejects the kind of impersonal utilitarianism that was espoused by his contemporaries James Mill and Jeremy Bentham in favor of a view of ethics founded in relationships with particular persons and things. The discussion proceeds chronologically through Wordsworth’s career as a writer—from his juvenilia through his poems of the 1830s and '40s—providing a valuable introduction to the poet’s work. The book will appeal to readers interested in the vital connection between literature and moral philosophy.

Book Wordsworth

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Richard Watson
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press
  • Release : 1984
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 80 pages

Download or read book Wordsworth written by John Richard Watson and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appearance of Wordsworth's and Coleridge's Lyrical Ballads (1798) and of Wordsworth's preface to the second edition (1800) have generally been regarded as the first major landmark of a new era in English literature. The authors announced a fresh approach to poetry, their purpose being 'to throw over incidents taken from common life a certain colouring of the imagination, whereby ordinary things should be presented in an unusual aspect...' In these early poems Wordsworth gives us, as Professor Watson expresses it, 'A poetry the texture of which allows no escape'. He stresses the skill with which Wordsworth varies his language according to the character of each poem, and concludes that the language of Lyrical Ballads should be seen as a whole: we should beware of regarding the more elevated diction of 'Tintern Abbey' as the true voice of Wordsworth, and of writing off the simpler style of the tales. The main part of the essay is devoted to The Prelude, in which the author finds some important points of resemblance to Paradise Lost. Although The Prelude is ostensibly an autobiography, it deals with the loss of the paradise of childhood and in some respects raises the long autobiographical poem to the level of epic. The final section considers the sonnets and The Excursion, Wordsworth's later and more sombre meditation on the central problems of human life. The essay explains in many contexts, both in Wordsworth's prose and his verse, his fundamental conceptions of the poet as a human being who shares the joys and sorrows of all mankind with a more than common enthusiasm. The author is Professor of English Literature in the University of Durham. His publications include Picturesque Landscape and English Romantic Poetry and Wordsworth's Vital Soul, a study of the sacred and the profane in Wordsworth's poetry (1982). He is the editor of a major anthology, Everyman's Book of Victorian Verse, of a 'casebook' on Browning and of an edition of Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge (1983).
