Download or read book Sista Talk written by Rochelle Brock and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sista Talk: The Personal and the Pedagogical is an inquiry into the questions of how Black women define their existence in a society which devalues, dehumanizes, and silences their beliefs. Placing herself inside of the research, Rochelle Brock invites the reader on a journey of self-exploration, as she and seven of her Black female students investigate their collective journey toward self-awareness in the attempt to liberate their minds and souls from ideological domination. Throughout, Sista Talk attempts to understand the ways in which this self-exploration informs her pedagogy. Combining Black feminist and Afrocentric Theory with critical pedagogy, this book frames the parameters for an Afrowomanist pedagogy of wholeness for teaching Black students.
Download or read book Word from the Mother written by Geneva Smitherman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-26 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic text by Geneva Smitherman, pioneering scholar of Black Talk, is a definitive statement on African American Language (AAL). Enriched by her inimitable writing style, the book outlines past debates on the speech of African Americans and provides a vision for the future. As global manifestations of AAL increase, she argues that we must broaden our conception of the language and its speakers, and further examine the implications of gender, age and class on AAL. Perhaps most of all we must appreciate the "artistic and linguistic genius" of AAL, from Hip Hop lyrics to the rhyme and rhetoric of the broader Black speech community. Smitherman explores AAL's contribution to American English, includes a summary of expressions as a suggested linguistic core of AAL, and features cartoons that educate readers on the broader relationship between language, race, and racism. This classic edition features a new foreword by H. Samy Alim, celebrating Smitherman's continuing impact on Black Language scholarship and her influence on the future of the field. Word from the Mother is an essential read for students of African American speech, language, culture and sociolinguistics, as well as the general reader interested in the worldwide "crossover" of Black popular culture.

Book excerpt: Wendi Feral's Eyes saw more than she wanted to admit. ‘Feral Eyes’ is the first novel in a series of thirteen, with six completed and ready to be published, ‘Wendi Feral’ is the main protagonist; we start at the beginning, her childhood. Wendi’s life morphed at barely 18 months old; she was tossed into a Gorilla exhibit at the San Francisco Zoo and nearly died, saved by Rocco, a Silverback Gorilla. Needless to say, her life forever was altered, and her destiny rewritten. Because of this traumatic accident, she’d developed a 7th sense that haunted her like a second skin. Wendi, by the age of 5 years old, had witnessed violent deaths, kidnappings, rape, armed robberies, sibling rivalries, and family breakups. Young Wendi was hospitalized, enduring countless medical evaluations from Neurologists, and child Psychiatrists, analyzed by the CIA and likewise acronyms, under constant surveillance and forced to be tested like a lab rat. Helping Lil Wendi survive was an unwavering Love and Devotion from her parents. Hey, and all of this by the age of 5 years old. Her story and life have many exciting experiences, love, suspense, mystery twists and turns, and never a dull moment. At 19 years old, Wendi opened her‘ Feral Feedback’ business which produced trained animals for various tasks; she worked for the FBI on many cases, such as a mind-boggling disorder… causing a killer epidemic. Readers seem perplexed at which Genre label should be attached to this story, deciding it’s a combination of Fantasy, Adventure, Crime drama, Action thriller, Mystery, Horror, ‘Uuhhh, a Potpourri’ mix?

Download or read book Henrietha written by Joyce M Johnson and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2011-03-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pair of novellas about friendship and endurance in the face of hardship. In the titular story, Johnson introduces an unlikely pair of friends: Joanna White, a white Canadian journalist struggling to overcome the breakup of her long-term relationship, and Henrietha Browne, a Jamaican woman who has seen her share of troubles. Henrietha relates her history of oppression and abuse as well as her quest to find autonomy in a world beset with racism, sexism and poverty. In the process, Joanna comes to a deeper understanding of her own oppression and how her identity, while playing a role in both her successes and failures, is more of a bridge than a barrier to her communion with women of all races and backgrounds. Waiting for the World to Change, a smaller novella, follows a similar structure as black, Canadian, criminal, lawyer, Susan Ottawa leads the defense team in a high profile murder case while drawing strength from her 'jural god' Johnny Cochrane and who seeks counsel with Jamaican housekeeper Anita Kingsley. As they share their feelings about men, religion and racism, Susan sees her life in a new light and slowly opens her heart to Anita's brand of optimistic spirituality. The mirrored structures of both novellas tie them together.

Download or read book Moving in the Shadows written by Liz Kelly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the UK the number of people who came from a minority ethnic group grew by 53 per cent between 1991 and 2001, from 3.0 million in 1991 to 4.6 million in 2001. Whilst much has been written about the impact of these demographic changes in relation to policy issues, black and minority women and children remain under-researched. Recent publications have tended to focus on South Asian women, forced marriage and 'honour' related violence. Moving in the Shadows brings together for the first time in a single volume, an examination of violence against women and children within the diverse communities of the UK. Its strength lies in its gendered focus as well as its understanding of the need for an integrated approach to all forms of violence against women, whilst foregrounding the experiences of minority women, the communities they are part of, and the organizations which have advocated for their rights and given them voice. The chapters contained within this volume explore a set of core themes: the forms and contexts of violence minority women experience; the continuum of violence; the role of culture and faith in the control of women and girls; the types of intervention within multi-cultural and social cohesion policies; the impacts of violence on British-born and migrant women and girls; and the intersection of race, class, gender and sexuality highlighting issues of similarity and difference. Taken together, they provide a valuable resource for scholars, students, activists, social workers and policy-makers working in the field.
Download or read book Double Negative written by Racquel J. Gates and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the antics of Flavor Flav on Flavor of Love to the brazen behavior of the women on Love & Hip Hop, so-called negative images of African Americans are a recurrent mainstay of contemporary American media representations. In Double Negative Racquel J. Gates examines the generative potential of such images, showing how some of the most disreputable representations of black people in popular media can strategically pose questions about blackness, black culture, and American society in ways that more respectable ones cannot. Rather than falling back on claims that negative portrayals hinder black progress, Gates demonstrates how reality shows such as Basketball Wives, comedians like Katt Williams, and movies like Coming to America play on "negative" images to take up questions of assimilation and upward mobility, provide a respite from the demands of respectability, and explore subversive ideas. By using negativity as a framework to illustrate these texts' social and political work as they reverberate across black culture, Gates opens up new lines of inquiry for black cultural studies.
Download or read book English as a Local Language written by Christina Higgins and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2009-07-08 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When analyzed in multilingual contexts, English is often treated as an entity that is separable from its linguistic environment. It is often the case, however, that multilinguals use English in hybrid and transcultural ways. This book explores how multilingual East Africans make use of English as a local resource in their everyday practices by examining a range of domains, including workplace conversation, beauty pageants, hip hop and advertising. Drawing on the Bakhtinian concept of multivocality, the author uses discourse analysis and ethnographic approaches to demonstrate the range of linguistic and cultural hybridity found across these domains, and to consider the constraints on hybridity in each context. By focusing on the cultural and linguistic bricolage in which English is often found, the book illustrates how multilinguals respond to the tension between local identification and dominant conceptualizations of English as a language for global communication.
