Book A brush with Mr Naipaul

Download or read book A brush with Mr Naipaul written by Suresh Subrahmanyan and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suresh Subrahmanyan draws freely from his life experiences to present this compendium of acutely observed columns. His métier, humour and satire, and his abiding love for the English language, resonate on every page. He delves nostalgically into his childhood, ruminating on, among other things, boarding school escapades and a wide spectrum of music that saturates his life. He paints a vivid portrait of India’s contrariness with a light brush, warts and all. Politics, sport, the arts, current affairs and selective autobiography – they are all grist to the author’s mill. As he himself says, ‘I write for fun. If the reader is amused, it’s a bonus’. Suresh Subrahmanyan is refreshingly different from others of his ilk. He is known for his eclectic tastes, partial to wit and satire, a cricket tragic (in Aussie parlance) and an aficionado of music of varied genres. Small wonder that he has been a regular columnist in leading newspapers. His writings, covering a wide range of subjects, come as a breath of fresh air. This delightfully humorous collection of his choicest columns, impeccably written, will lift the reader’s spirits. N. Murali Chairman, Kasturi and Sons Ltd (Holding company of The Hindu Group) and President, The Music Academy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central to the development of abstract art, in the early decades of the 20th century was the conception (most famously articulated by Walter Pater) that the most appropriate paradigm for non-figurative art was music. The assumption has always been that this model was most effectively understood as Western art music (classical music). However, the musical form that was abstract art's true twin is jazz, a music that originated with African Americans, but which had a profound impact on European artistic sensibilities. Both art forms share creative techniques of rhythm, groove, gesture and improvisation. This book sets out to theorize affinities and connections between, and across, two seemingly diverse cultural phenomena.

Book Word and Music Studies

  • Author : Suzanne M. Lodato
  • Publisher : Rodopi
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9789042009936
  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book Word and Music Studies written by Suzanne M. Lodato and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2002 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteen interdisciplinary essays in this volume were presented in 2001 in Sydney, Australia, at the Third International Conference on Word and Music Studies, which was sponsored by The International Association for Word and Music Studies (WMA). The conference celebrated the sixty-fifth birthday of Steven Paul Scher, arguably the central figure in word and music studies during the last thirty-five years. The first section of this volume comprises ten articles that discuss, or are methodologically based upon, Scher's many analyses of and critical commentaries on the field, particularly on interrelationships between words and music. The authors cover such topics as semiotics, intermediality, hermeneutics, the de-essentialization of the arts, and the works of a wide range of literary figures and composers that include Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Proust, T. S. Eliot, Goethe, Hölderlin, Mann, Britten, Schubert, Schumann, and Wagner. The second section consists of a second set of papers presented at the conference that are devoted to a different area of word and music studies: cultural identity and the musical stage. Eight scholars investigate - and often problematize - widespread assumptions regarding 'national' and 'cultural' music, language, plots, and production values in musical stage works. Topics include the National Socialists' construction of German national identity; reception-based examinations of cultural identity and various "national" opera styles; and the means by which composers, librettists, and lyricists have attempted to establish national or cultural identity through their stage works.
