Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “riveting and thoroughly researched” history of language technology’s effect on society across millennia—from Sumerian syntax to social media hashtags (Phil Lapsley). Writing was born thousands of years ago in Mesopotamia. Spreading to Sumer, and then Egypt, this revolutionary tool allowed rulers to extend their control far and wide, giving rise to the world’s first empires. When Phoenician traders took their alphabet to Greece, literacy’s first boom led to the birth of drama and democracy. In Rome, it helped spell the downfall of the Republic. Later, medieval scriptoria and vernacular bibles gave rise to religious dissent, and with the combination of cheaper paper and Gutenberg’s printing press, the fuse of Reformation was lit. The Industrial Revolution brought the telegraph and the steam driven printing press, allowing information to move faster and wider than ever before through the invention of the newspaper. But along with radio and television, these new technologies were more easily exploited by the powerful, as seen in Germany, the Soviet Union, even Rwanda, where radio incited genocide. With the rise of carbon duplicates (Russian samizdat), photocopying (the Pentagon Papers), the internet, social media, and cell phones (the recent Arab Spring) more people have access to communications, making the world more connected than ever before. This “accessible, quite enjoyable, and highly informative read” will change the way you look at technology, history, and power (Booklist). “[Bernstein] enables us to see what remains the same, even as much has changed.” —Library Journal, “Editors’ Picks” “It brims with interesting ideas and astonishing connections.” —Phil Lapsley, author of Exploding the Phone: The Untold Story of the Teenagers and Outlaws Who Hacked Ma Bell “[Bernstein’s] narrative is succinct and extremely well sourced. . . . [He] reminds us of a number of technologies whose changed roles are less widely chronicled in conventional histories of the media.” —The Irish Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Feeble Creature’ is arrested and charged with committing a crime under several penal codes for causing disruption and chaos by inflicting unfounded fear among the masses. His crime is writing and circulating four articles taking an extreme contrarian view that humankind is suffering from ‘progeria’, the rarest of rare diseases known to medical science. In his defense before the court of justice, he says- “I sincerely desired to infuse the real meaning of ‘living’ in the psyche of mankind so that they may battle out the death inflicted by this metaphysical ailment I conveniently call ‘Progeria’. I haven’t committed any crime in doing so by expressing my conviction, cautioning and alerting the commoners to take notice. It is up to them to take notice, realize and act or ignore the warning” This novel depicts the very cause that has led mankind to this lethal metaphysical ailment, the author termed as ‘metaphysical progeria’. The author has also ventured to present a possible remedy, who only the rarest of the rare may chance to put into application. He does this by taking readers on a short journey aboard a train, a perfect analogy for the journey of life as passengers seems ever waiting for the next, an assumed time, projecting data internalized from dead past. The author dares to write an obituary of the metaphysical demise of mankind, unravelling how he arrives at this conclusion. The author believes, however, that those who choose themselves still have a chance to rise from their metaphysical graves.

Book The Power of Confession

Download or read book The Power of Confession written by Gery Malanda and published by Gery Malanda. This book was released on with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confession is a word we have heard often but not truly had a biblical understanding of it. Confession has been associated with religion where we confess our sin or has been likened to a declaration. Brother Gery Malanda (Apostle and Leader of House Of Prayer For All Nations-Europe and Teacher on TBN’s Voice of Healing UK) gives a biblical teaching on what is confession. He explores what the bible teaches on confession of sin and the power of the blood of Jesus in cleaning ALL sins. Brother Gery highlights the power of exposing the works of darkness by confessing our secret sin using biblical examples as well as sharing from his own personal experiences. Through the word of God, he demystifies what God meant in forgiving of sin. In this book, he presents the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross as a salvation package that provides for our salvation, healing, deliverance and prosperity. Finally, Brother Gery explores the importance of confessing the word of God in one’s life highlighting it’s advantages. The three components that are involved in a true confession and the power of the tongue in framing the world around you. Through this succinct teaching Brother Gery demonstrates the importance of thinking as God thinks, saying only what God is saying and doing only what is doing according to His word in transforming yourself and the world around you.

Book Words and Rules

Download or read book Words and Rules written by Steven Pinker and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If you are not already a Steven Pinker addict, this book will make you one." -- Jared Diamond In Words and Rules, Steven Pinker explores profound mysteries of language by picking a deceptively simple phenomenon -- regular and irregular verbs -- and examining it from every angle. With humor and verve, he covers an astonishing array of topics in the sciences and humanities, from the history of languages to how to simulate languages on computers to major ideas in the history of Western philosophy. Through it all, Pinker presents a single, powerful idea: that language comprises a mental dictionary of memorized words and a mental grammar of creative rules. The idea extends beyond language and offers insight into the very nature of the human mind. This is a sparkling, eye-opening, and utterly original book by one of the world's leading cognitive scientists.

Book Morning and Evening Meditations from the Word of God

Download or read book Morning and Evening Meditations from the Word of God written by Michael J. Akers and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many devotional books available containing brief, daily inspirations that benefit all who read them. This book is different in two respects. The first is obvious: it contains two readings per day—732 in all. The second, more important difference is that the author wanted to do more than offer inspiration; this would make this book no different than so many others. The messages in the book are study sketches in that the content is not only inspirational, but also educational, challenging, and encouraging. Most of these writings were based on author Michael J. Akers’s teaching of adult Bible studies for more than thirty years and learning what really brought adults to want to deepen their knowledge and application of the Word of God.
