Book excerpt: This is perhaps the most frequently consulted book in New Jersey genealogy. It was originally published in 1900 as Vol. XXII of the Archives of the State of New Jersey, and it remains today the principal authority on early New Jersey marriages. All told it contains approximately 30,000 entries (15,000 marriages), giving place of residence and date of marriage. The bulk of the work derives from marriage bonds and licenses formerly located in the Secretary of State's office but now on file in the New Jersey State Library. The balance--perhaps an additional 5,000 entries--were extracted from the marriage records of churches and counties in New Jersey. For the sake of simplicity the marriages are arranged in two alphabets, male and female.

Download or read book The World of the Country House in Seventeenth century England written by John Trevor Cliffe and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging and beautifully illustrated book takes us back to the domestic world of the landed gentry in seventeenth-century England. Relating countless stories and case histories drawn from a wide range of primary sources, the book describes the physical environment, staffing, and functioning of gentry households, the inhabitants and their activities, and the role of these houses in the social and economic life of their localities. J. T. Cliffe begins by exploring the exterior and interior of houses and the outbuildings, parks, and gardens that surrounded them. He then investigates the people who lived in the country houses and the relationships between them. He provides colorful details about the responsibilities of the squire and his wife; the duties, remuneration, food, clothing, accommodation, and treatment of servants; and the special duties of estate stewards, coachmen, chaplains, and tutors. Cliffe explains various aspects of housekeeping, such as the tradition of hospitality and the factors militating against it. He also discusses other kinds of activity: religious practices; outdoor sports and indoor pastimes, including music and billiards; and such intellectual pursuits as antiquarian research, poetry, and scientific experiments. He concludes with a fascinating survey of scandal in the world of the gentry, telling of domestic strife, financial disaster, lunacy, and other disasters that marred this idyllic existence.
Download or read book The Country House Revealed written by Dan Cruickshank and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning the architectural history of the country house from the disarming Elizabethan charm of South Wraxall, the classical rigour of Kinross in Scotland, the majesty and ingenuity of Hawksmoor's Easton Neston, the Palladian sweep of Wentworth Woodhouse, with over 300 rooms and frontage of 600 feet, the imperial exuberance of Clandeboye, through to the ebullient vitality of Lutyens' Marshcourt, the stories of these houses tell the story of our nation. All are the are buildings of the greatest architectural interest, each with a fascinating human story to tell, and all remain private homes that are closed to the public. But their owners have opened their doors and allowed Dan Cruickshank to roam the corridors and rummage in the cellars as he teases out the story of each house - who built them, the generations who lived in them, and the families who lost them. Along the way he has uncovered tales of excess and profligacy, tragedy, comedy, power and ambition. And as these intriguing narratives take shape, Dan shows how the story of each house is inseparable from the social and economic history of Britain. Each one is built as a wave of economic development crests, or crumbles. Each one's architecture and design is thus expressive of the aims, strengths and frailties of those who built them. Together they plot the psychological, economic and social route map of our country's ruling class in a rich new telling of our island story.
