Book excerpt: The wood-fired boiler at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury, Vermont was investigated in order to identify environmental and economic problems associated with increased use of wood as fuel. The investigators observed that the low amount of stack emissions contained particulates that were extremely effective light scatterers. An analysis of the entire system was performed in order to investigate the particulate growth and the conversion of gaseous material to particulates within the system. Initial findings indicate that a good deal of particulate formation takes place within and after the cyclone, thus rendering the cyclone somewhat ineffective in this system. Meteorological data were acquired in the vicinity of the experimental site. Background concentrations were measured using hi-vol samplers and a Tracer experiment was performed to indicate the direction of plume travel. These data were incorporated into the Los Alamos Visibility Model to simulate the actual appearance of the plume with a variety of boiler sizes. This simulation gives one an indication of how large a boiler, sited in this location, can be before the opacity of the plume becomes aesthetically offensive. An economic assessment of the wood burning activities at Waterbury and a number of other sites is included in this report.

Book excerpt: The success of the previous Conferences on Energy from Biomass, held in Brighton 1980and Berlin 1982, and the continued interest among European countries, encouraged theCommission of the European Communities to organise the third conference on this areaof energy production. It brought together about 500 experts from many countries thuspresenting an international forum for discussion of the most recent advances in researchand development, manufacture and industrial applications.
Download or read book Recent Advances in Plant Biotechnology written by Ara Kirakosyan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-15 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant biotechnology applies to three major areas of plants and their uses: (1) control of plant growth and development; (2) protection of plants against biotic and abiotic stresses; and (3) expansion of ways by which specialty foods, biochemicals, and pharmaceuticals are produced. The topic of recent advances in plant biotechnology is ripe for consideration because of the rapid developments in this ?eld that have revolutionized our concepts of sustainable food production, cost-effective alt- native energy strategies, environmental bioremediation, and production of pla- derived medicines through plant cell biotechnology. Many of the more traditional approaches to plant biotechnology are woefully out of date and even obsolete. Fresh approaches are therefore required. To this end, we have brought together a group of contributors who address the most recent advances in plant biotechnology and what they mean for human progress, and hopefully, a more sustainable future. Achievements today in plant biotechnology have already surpassed all previous expectations. These are based on promising accomplishments in the last several decades and the fact that plant biotechnology has emerged as an exciting area of research by creating unprecedented opportunities for the manipulation of biological systems. In connection with its recent advances, plant biotechnology now allows for the transfer of a greater variety of genetic information in a more precise, controlled manner. The potential for improving plant productivity and its proper use in agric- ture relies largely on newly developed DNA biotechnology and molecular markers.

Download or read book Sustainable Refurbishment written by Sunil Shah and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-07-16 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Refurbishment Governments across the EU and developed countries are increasingly being directed towards improving existing built stock as a key ingredient to meeting climate change challenges. This guide to green ‘retro-fitting’ for corporate real estate, facility managers and occupiers struggling to reduce their building’s carbon footprint will help in the planning and management of a sustainable refurbishment programme. Sustainable Refurbishment is structured into four parts: the first gives the context, together with an overview on sustainable development and refurbishment projects separately, and the value gained from a sustainable refurbishment. Part Two details the regulatory and financial drivers, together with market pressures, and provides an overview of where this is leading, giving the implications for sustainable refurbishment. Part Three provides technical support on carbon measures, helping to determine the feasibility of good practices as part of the refurbishment. Included is a review of energy efficiency, renewable and low carbon technologies and embodied carbon to enable lifecycle carbon calculations, together with the necessary behavioural change aspects needed to embed the changes. Linkages and benefits between the technologies will be highlighted. Part Four reviews refurbishment from a wider environmental perspective, understanding the challenges and opportunities that exist for particular developments from a materials, water, biodiversity and transport perspective. Throughout the book, checklists are provided on typical activities and best practice; these are expanded through relevant case studies and examples to show-case previous good practices and lessons learnt. The book’s structure allows a matrix approach, with Parts Three and Four containing the technical information necessary to deliver sustainable refurbishment. The book provides a much-needed link between policy-level commitment and detailed technical delivery. This easily digestible and authoritative review of the key issues in green retro-fitting is crucial for facilities managers; building surveyors; property managers/owners; and corporate real estate involved in sustainable refurbishment by offering the practical support needed to make it happen.
