More pointedly, the review seeks to gain a better understanding of the (1) conceptual frameworks explaining technology transfer and the factors that such frameworks suggest as important to the use of knowledge provided by research, (2) public and private organizations that sponsor efforts to transfer technologies provided by research, and (3) conditions necessary for the effective transfer of technologies provided by research, especially those conditions called to mind by experienced researchers and research program managers.

Book Developing and Commercializing Sustainable New Wood Products

Download or read book Developing and Commercializing Sustainable New Wood Products written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A process was designed to evaluate the sustainability and potential marketability of USDA Forest Service patented technologies. The process was designed and tested jointly by the University of North Carolina, the University of Michigan, Partners for Strategic Change, and the USDA Forest Service. Two technologies were evaluated: a fiber-based product and a wood fiber/fiberglass composite technology. The results indicate several different ways in which the technologies might be exploited to produce new commercial products for both domestic and international markets, through licensing of the patents and other agency/industry partnerships. This report represents the initial effort by the Forest Service to work in partnership with business schools to evaluate the commercial potential of patented agency technologies and locate potential licensees and cooperators interested in utilizing the technologies. The Forest Service will seek additional cooperative ventures with university business schools to develop business plans for other patented, but as yet unlicensed, technologies as the next step in the process of commercializing these technologies.

Book Innovation in the Forest Products Industry

Download or read book Innovation in the Forest Products Industry written by Abra Hovgaard and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because there is a lack of innovation research in the forest products industry and innovative activities in the industry are not well documented, this study attempted to fill that void. The objectives of this study were to understand the process and definition of innovation in the forest products industry, identify the constraints on innovative activities, identify resources that would improve innovation in forest products companies, compare the innovation environments in Alaska and Oregon, and provide a benchmark study for innovation in the forest products industry.‍?‍?This study revealed that there are several aspects of innovation in the forest products industry. In addition, the innovation process is a combination of semiformal development stages, trial and error, intuition, and luck. A variety of factors constrained companies from being more innovative, including government regulations, shipping and labor costs, lack of cash flow, raw material characteristics, marketing expertise, and raw material supply. There do not appear to be any resources that would be helpful to forest products companies, at least none that the interviewed companies could recommend. Offering companies the chance to exchange ideas and network is the most valuable resource available.‍?‍?The innovation environments in Alaska and Oregon are somewhat similar yet different in the marketing tactics employed and the techniques used to obtain market information.‍?‍?Furthermore, the type of innovation projects that each region focuses on differs, as does the actual process used to develop innovations. Future research should focus on completing a quantitative component to this study, developing short courses or 1-day seminars, identifying factors that contribute to innovation success and failure, investigating why the forest products industry is not innovative by nature, and exploring the external acquisition of innovation in the forest products industry.

Book Wood Utilization Research and Product Development Capacity in the United States a Review

Download or read book Wood Utilization Research and Product Development Capacity in the United States a Review written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public and private research focused on wood utilization and product development in the United States is an important source of innovation required for sustaining the worldwide competitive position of the wood-based industry. Because of the research communitys diversity, the exact magnitude of investment in wood utilization research is subject for much conjecture. However, in 2008 an estimated 400 to 500 wood utilization research projects were implemented by 150 to 200 federal, state and private entities. Investments in publically implemented projects were in the range of $110 to $120 million, while, by some estimates, investments in projects sponsored by private concerns exceeded $2.5 billion in the same year. Scientists and supporting staff engaged by public research organizations was in the range of 900 to 1,000 in 2008. For research conducted by private concerns, scientists and engineers approached 8,000 in number. To experienced administrators, conditions necessary for a successful research enterprise focused on wood utilization and product development include clarity in purpose and well-defined client groups, effective governing boards and advisory committees, visionary and enthusiastic administrators, talented and risk taking scientists, satisfied research clients and customers, and research contributions that add to the scientific foundation considered necessary to enhance the efficient use of wood.

Book Marketing Recommendations for Wood Products from Alaska Birch Red Alder and Alaska Yellow cedar

Download or read book Marketing Recommendations for Wood Products from Alaska Birch Red Alder and Alaska Yellow cedar written by Geoffrey H. Donovan and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several factors have contributed to a recent decline in Alaska's wood products industry, including reduced exports to Japan and the closure of two pulp mills in southeast Alaska. However, higher value niche markets are a potential growth area for the industry. In this paper, we consider niche markets for three species that have historically been harvested in low volumes--Alaska birch (Betula papyrifera var. humilis (Reg.) Fern. & Raup), red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.), and Alaska yellowcedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (D. Don) Spach). The extent of the resource, current utilization, and an overview of recent research efforts are examined. Specific marketing recommendations are then provided for each species, based on these evaluations. Wide-ranging opportunities for a variety of primary and secondary wood products exist that utilize character-marked lumber, lower grades of lumber, and material from standing-dead sources. This report concludes with a framework for future research, identifying key opportunities to differentiate Alaska wood products in the marketplace.
