Book The Use of Wood Pulp for Paper Making Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Use of Wood Pulp for Paper Making Classic Reprint written by S. Chas; Philipps and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of Wood Pulp for Paper-Making It was with peculiar pleasure that I accepted the compliment you were good enough to pay me, when you invited me to read a paper on the subject of "Wood Pulp." I have been reminded of the fact that there are in this Society many members who have no practical acquaintance with paper-making or with the subject I am trying to deal with to-night, and, therefore, I hope to avoid technicalities as much as possible, although I think you will readily see it is necessary in a paper of this kind to deal in a general way with the evolution of the wood pulp industry, and particularly in its application to paper-making, and in this connection, to deal historically with the progress of pulp-making, and its chemical treatment. I think, perhaps, I need scarcely say at the outset, that in the cheaper forms of paper, as we know it to-day, the raw material is substantially wood. I am aware that if you were to ask "the man in the street" of what paper is made, you would probably be told "rags"; but although that used to be the case, the use of paper to-day is so extensive that it would be impossible to meet the demand for one-thousandth part of the total consumption, if the paper-maker had to rely on rags, and I think I may here say that it is due to the engineer and to the chemist that we owe our cheap Press, and largely to the fact that wood has been taken full advantage of in its application to paper-making. Book Notes on the Manufacture of Wood Pulp and Wood Pulp Papers Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Manufacture of Wood Pulp and Wood-Pulp Papers N my previous efforts to put before the paper trade a reliable Guide to the Manufacture of Paper, based upon my own practical experience, I confined myself to the raw material best known to me at that time. But since the issue of the last edition of my book a decade in papermaking seems to have passed over us; and, with the advent of a popular and comparatively new material, which is better known on the Continent of Europe than with us, and which is fast coming to the front, I con sider the present a fit opportunity to put my experience of wood fibre manipulation on the Continent before the trade: The result I leave to practical men. If I am enabled to add a little to the knowledge of those en gaged in the papermaking industry (especially the rising and younger portion), it will be a pleasure to me to know that I have thus been of some help to them. Book Modern Pulp and Paper Making

Download or read book Modern Pulp and Paper Making written by G. S. Witham Sr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Pulp and Paper Making: A Practical Treatise During thirty-seven years of experience in the pulp and paper industry the author has frequently and repeatedly felt the need of a practical work on the manufacture of pulp and paper, as carried on in America, that would not be so abstruse and technical as to be beyond the grasp of the average papermaker, and which at the same time would not merely skim the surface of the various subdivisions of the art. In the present volume an attempt has been made to describe the equipment and processes actually used in pulp and paper plants on this continent today, giving such practical information as would be of help to men working around these plants from day to day. It is hoped that the present volume will be useful to practical papermakers and, at the same time, that it may possibly be of service to technical men not intimately in touch with the pulp and paper industry and desiring to know the salient facts about it. No attempt has been made to describe every piece of equipment ever used in the industry. Neither has the author attempted to deal with the historical aspect. Also, while recognizing the great importance of chemistry in connection with papermaking, no chemical considerations have been introduced which would not readily be comprehended by one with no special knowledge of that science. It may seem strange to some readers of this book that the author has not devoted more space to detailed information concerning bag paper - with which branch of the industry he is particularly identified. In the first place, relatively few of the readers of this book are likely to be especially interested in bag paper, and if overmuch space were devoted to this subject readers interested in other branches might justifiably feel that their interests had been neglected. Of course, this difficulty might have been avoided by giving equally detailed attention to every variety of paper, but such a treatment would have necessitated a much larger book and, consequently, one so expensive as to be beyond the reach of many men actually engaged in the industry. Book The Testing of Wood Pulp

Download or read book The Testing of Wood Pulp written by Sindall Sindall and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Testing of Wood Pulp: A Practical Handbook for the Pulp and Paper Trades A Growing demand for a simple handbook on the testing of wood pulp has led the authors to publish in convenient form an elementary treatise on the subject, embodying the results which have been obtained by leading analysts, and some descriptions of the methods now employed in various countries. The book is divided into two sections: - (1) The sampling and testing of pulp for moisture. (2) The testing of wood pulp for its bleaching qualities. An Appendix has been added which will be appreciated by all consumers of Wood Pulp, namely: - The Chemistry of Bleaching. The Authors desire to acknowledge the kindness of Messrs. Stonhill Gillis for permission to reprint many articles contributed by them during recent years to the Worlds Paper Trade Review, and also to acknowledge a similar favour from Messrs. Marchant Singer & Co. in respect of one or two articles from the Paper Makers' Monthly Journal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Products of Canada, 1909: Pulp Wood Three-fifths or 608 per cent of the pulpwood manufactured in Canada was reduced by mechanical process; the sulphite process accounted for over one-third per cent) of the wood used, and the remainder (2 per cent) was manufactured lay the soda process. Spruce was the chief wood used in each process of manufacture. Over one-half (579 per cent) of the spruce was used for mechanical pulp; two-fifths (406 per cent) was manufactured into sulphite pulp, and the remainder per cent) was manufactured by the soda process. Balsam was used in the mechanical and sulphite processes only, and found greatest favour in the mechanical process ov'er four-fifths (81 '3 per cent) of the balsam was used in the mechanical process. Poplar is not adapted for manufacture by the mechanical or grinding process (98 3 per cent) of the poplar used was manufactured by the chemical processes, per cent) in sulphite mills and (405 per cent) in soda mills. The soda process, though expensive, may be successfully used with more varieties of wood than the other processes. The small quantities of hemlock used was manufactured into soda pulp. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulp and Paper: And Other Products From Waste Resinous Woods The idea that the waste long-leaf yellow pine, Norway pine, Douglas fir, and other woods rich in resins can be used for the making of paper, wood turpentine, rosin oils, and similar products is not new, but the industry is just beginning to develop. It has received more or less attention in this bureau during the past seven years, where information as to its feasibility and practicability and as to the yields and character of the products which may be made has been gathered. This information points the way to the means whereby valuable timber may be conserved and the menacing waste wood of the lumbering operations may be profitably utilized. The making of paper from these woods presents no unusual difficulties; in fact, several mills are running almost exclusively on such woods, while others use them in greater or less quantity. The recovery of wood turpentine, pine oils, and other products from resinous woods by steam or destructive distillation has been fairly well worked out, and, when a plant is properly located and equipped and operated skillfully, this industry is proving profitable. The production of rosin oils, tars, and pitches from common rosin is also a thoroughly established, well-understood, and profitable industry. With these successful results in view, it is at once clear that a combination of the three industries, using waste wood as the raw material from which all the products of these industries may be made, should be more profitable and require less capital, equipment, and labor than the three when conducted separately. Since each of these industries, paper-making, wood distillation, and rosin-oil production, is already well developed and the details quite well understood, no experimental demonstration on a manufacturing scale is needed to prove the practicability of the combination of the three. In short, such combination under one management is the most logical industrial condition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulpwood Production in the North Central Region, by County, 1968 Pulpwood production and receipts were the highest ever recorded in the Central States. The cords produced in 1968 was nearly one-third higher than the output in 1967 (table At least three factors account ed for the increase: first, new and rebuilt paper machines required more wood pulp, thus a larger percentage of pulping capacity was utilized than in 1967. Second, the product mix was changed to one using more pulpwood and less substitute materials. Finally, one company that had not received pulpwood for several years, reported wood receipts in 1968. Only cords were exported from the region, of which cords were hardwood residues. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Pulp Wood of Canada Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pulp Wood of Canada Classic Reprint written by George Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulp Wood of Canada The Papyrus, the paper-reed of the brook, gave us the name paper. The word library in English, and the French word libraire, preserve for us a record of the fact that books were once formed of the bark (liber) of trees. The French word livre traces its origin to the same source. The English word book comes from the anglo-saxon word boc, the beech tree; and was so derived because the early anglo-saxons, like the other Teutonic tribes, used the bark and wood of that tree for writing material. In modern times we have reverted to the ways of our ancestors and have gone back to the arboreal growth for the supply of paper to meet the world's marvellous demands. Download or read book Pulp and News Paper Manufacture Classic Reprint written by John Stadler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulp and News-Paper Manufacture The subject of this paper is the power consumption in the manufacture of news-paper, and in the production of the fibre for the making of the paper. That is, the ground-wood and sulphite process. The fibre used in the making of news-paper is produced entirely from wood. The wood used is principally spruce, hemlock and balsam. The other coniferous woods are used' in smaller quantities. News-paper is usually manufactured from 75% mechanical pulp (ground-wood) and 25% chemical pulp (sulphite pulp). Under ordinary conditions one cord of wood is required to make one ton of ground-wood, and two cords of wood are required to make one ton of sulphite pulp: hence for the production of news-paper one and a quarter cords of wood are used for every ton of news-paper made.
