Book Genetics of Wood Production

Download or read book Genetics of Wood Production written by Bruce J. Zobel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-12-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past years, a great deal has been learned about variation in wood prop erties. Genetic control is a major source of variation in most wood properties. Wood is controlled genetically both directly in the developmental or internal pro cesses of wood formation and indirectly by the control of tree form and growth patterns. Emphasis in this book will be on the internal control of wood production by genetics although there will be two chapters dealing with the indirect genetic control of wood, which was covered in detail in the previous book by Zobel and van Buijtenen (1989). The literature on the genetics of wood is very variable, SO'lle quite superficial, on which little reliance can be placed, and some from well-designed and correctly executed research. When suitable, near the end of each chapter, there will be a summary with the authors' interpretation of the most important information in the chapter. The literature on the genetics of wood can be quite controversial. This is to be expected, since both the environment and its interaction with the genotype of the tree can have a major effect on wood properties, especially when trees of similar genotypes are grown under widely divergent conditions. Adding to the confusion, studies frequently have been designed and analyzed quite differently, resulting in conflicting assessments of results.

Book Specific Gravity and Other Properties of Wood and Bark for 156 Tree Species Found in North America

Download or read book Specific Gravity and Other Properties of Wood and Bark for 156 Tree Species Found in North America written by Patrick D. Miles and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much information is available for specific gravity and other properties of wood and bark, but it is widely scattered in the literature. This paper compiles information for estimation of biomass for 156 tree species found in North America for use in national forest inventory applications. We present specific gravities based on average green volume as well as 12 percent moisture content volume for calculation of oven-dry biomass. Additional information is included on bark thickness, bark voids, and bark percentages by species and green and dry weight of wood and bark. --

Book Evaluation of Techniques for Determining the Density of Fine Woody Debris

Download or read book Evaluation of Techniques for Determining the Density of Fine Woody Debris written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluated various techniques for determining the density (i.e., bulk density) of fine woody debris during forest inventory activities. It was found that only experts in dead wood inventory may be able to identify fine woody debris stages of decay. Suggests various future research directions such as development of a 2-class fine woody debris decay class system.

Book Regional Comparisons of Wood Density and Branch Size in Low Stand Density Lodgepole Pine

Download or read book Regional Comparisons of Wood Density and Branch Size in Low Stand Density Lodgepole Pine written by G. R. Middleton and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines relationships between tree diameter at breast height, wood density, and knot size in good-site, low stand density lodgepole pine from five different biogeoclimatic zones in British Columbia. At least 30 trees were selected from stands at each site, and average basic wood density was determined from two cores obtained from each sample tree. Lumber strength estimates using a previously developed regression equation are also made.
