Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wood Carvings in English Churches The subject dealt with in this volume, so far as the writer knows, is virgin soil; no book has appeared, here or abroad, on the subject of stallwork. Abroad, the great mass of stallwork has perished; sometimes at the hands of pious vandals, often through neglect, more often still through indifference to or active dislike of mediaeval art. In the stallwork of Belgium not a single tabernacled canopy remains; in France and Italy the great majority of the Gothic stalls have been replaced by woodwork of the Classical design that was dear to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; only in Spain can the wealth and splendour of English stallwork be rivalled. In England a great amount of magnificent stallwork still remains; on the stallwork indeed and the concomitant screens time and labour and money were lavished without stint in the last two centuries of Gothic art. Hitherto, however, this important department of English mediaeval design has almost wholly lacked recognition and appreciation; attention had not been called to its value in the study of artistic woodwork, and even the most splendid examples of this branch of English art have been passed over with uncomprehending indifference. Vet it is no overstatement to say that there is nothing in this country more consummate in design or execution than the stallwork of Lancaster, Chester, Ripon, and Manchester. To most of the readers of this volume the illustrations which have been here gathered together will come as a revelation of beauty and interest. It is to be hoped that the book will help to inform those who are heritors of a great artistic past, will make them proud of their heritage as Englishmen, and faithful to preserve it and hand it on in turn unimpaired to their successors. Download or read book Wood Carvings in English Churches Vol 1 written by Francis Bond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wood Carvings in English Churches, Vol. 1: Misericords Owing to the liberality of many friends it has been possible to illustrate the book lavishly with photographs; in justice to them it should be added that photographs of misericords are taken under most difficult conditions; the high average excellence of the results is the more deserving of commendation. To reproduce the photographs the half-tone process is adopted; this necessitates loaded paper, which no one regrets more than the writer. Of the mediaeval misericords vast numbers have perished; e.g., of those formerly in the quire of Westminster Abbey all but one have gone. The fine examples at St Nicholas, Lynn, were sold by the churchwardens in 1853; they are now to be seen in the museum of the Architectural Association in Tufton Street, Westminster. Advertise ments of misericords for sale have appeared in quite recent times. Yet a large number fortunately survive. It is to be hoped that this book may increase interest in these carvings and arrest the work of mutilation and destruction. But decay is ever at work, and there is always the risk of fire, and wherever misericords remain, those in authority would do well to adopt the course taken at Beverley Minster, Worcester, Gloucester, and Ely cathedrals, and have every example carefully photographed. As will be seen from the Bibliography, the literature of the subject is scattered over a vast number of papers and articles in the transactions of archaeological societies, some of them unindexed, and many difficult of access; so far as the writer knows, all these sources have been examined. Mr G. C. Druce has contributed expert criticism to the improvement of the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Wood Carvings In English Churches: I.-Stalls And Tabernacle Work, Ii.-Bishops' Thrones And Chancel Chairs This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book Pulpits Lecterns and Organs in English Churches

Download or read book Pulpits Lecterns and Organs in English Churches written by J. Charles Cox and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulpits, Lecterns, and Organs in English Churches: With 155 Illustrations Although the name of the writer of the letterpress of this book is the only one that appears on the title-page and cover, he is by no means sure that the name of Mr Francis Bond, the General Editor of the series, ought not to have been bracketed with it, as to him these pages are indebted for all the labour and scholarly insight involved in the selection and arrangement of the vast number of choice illustrations of pulpits, lecterns, organ cases, and other consonant details within the covers; moreover, the letterpress also is indebted to his arrangement, advice, and corrections. The writer had long wished to produce a monograph on pulpits, and the suggestion that the subject should form one of the Oxford University Press' noteworthy series of books on the Church Art of English Churches was eagerly welcomed by him. Up to the present time, the only work on this essential branch of English ecclesiology has been Mr Dollman's Examples of Ancient Pulpits published in 1849, and long ago out of print. The pulpit of mediaeval days was evidently intended to take an unmistakably prominent part among the fittings of a church, for the best of sculpture and carving was usually employed in its construction, as is vividly demonstrated in the following pages; moreover, bright colouring was not infrequently employed, both in stone and wood examples, to make the pulpits still more distinctive. There are few subjects upon which mistakes are more common, even amongst those who have some knowledge of Church lore, than those of preaching and pulpits. It is to be hoped that this book may do something to correct several popular delusions. The bounden duty of preaching was insisted upon with constant reiteration by the mediaeval Church, and was by no means a special appanage of the Reformation period. The Anglo-Saxon priest, from the seventh century onwards, was bound to preach at least every Sunday and Saint's day. Upwards of one hundred and fifty sermons assigned to the Venerable Bede, and certainly of the eighth century, are extant. These sermons are almost entirely concerned with the gospel of the day, as they were usually preached at High Mass. Book English Church Woodwork

Download or read book English Church Woodwork written by Frank E. Howard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Church Woodwork: A Study in Craftsmanship During the Medieval Period, A D 1250-1550 MR herbert batsford has asked me to explain in a foreword the genesis of this book. For over twenty years it has been my habit to spend Six weeks of each year in studying and measuring up the medieval church woodwork of England. During the earlier years this was accomplished with the aid of a sketchbook, but the impossibility of purchasing photographs of detail, and the over whelming mass of material found, compelled me to resort to the aid of the camera. The negatives mounted up by stages into thousands, and Mr Batsford, overhauling the accumulated result, was anxious it should take some permanent form, and proposed a book on the subject. Two points became accentuated as the evidences were brought together: the superiority of the fifteenth century over all other periods, and the differences of type in construction and detail in the different parts of England. This, as far as my knowledge extends, has never been understood, or if so, it has been ignored by our restoring architects and commercial furnishing firms, and it is largely owing to this ignorance that the modern attempts to copy mediaeval woodwork have produced only dry bones, mechanical and dull, for the true spirit of Gothic art has not been breathed into them. This spirit cannot be understood by studying textbooks or copying a few standard examples; no living art is hidebound, but works out its own salvation in innumerable channels of independent thought and methods of craftsmanship. One never tires of examining the fragments of carved woodwork yet remaining in our now furbished and smartened churches, for there is always some thing to learn, some fresh idea to register.
