Here, on the verge of the Yellow Valley, is the starting-point of the several exploring parties who have made known to the world the wonders of this extraordinary territory; and here, doubtless, for many years to come the traveller in quest of the scenes described in these pages will shake hands with the advance guard of civilization before plunging into the wilderness. The discoveries narrated form an event of high public interest in the history of the United States, and have already been the subject of a legislative enactment. In consideration of the importance of the discoveries, and from a conviction that in a few years this region will be a place of resort for visitors from all parts of the world, the Senate and House of Representatives, on March 1, 1872, passed an act withdrawing from settlement, occupancy, or sale, under the laws of the United States, the tract of land described, being in extent 55 by 65 miles, and which territory is dedicated and set apart as a great national park or pleasure ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.
