Book The House on Lombardy Lane

Download or read book The House on Lombardy Lane written by Dave Landry and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, The House on Lombardy Lane, was inspired by my days as a teen in Little Rock, Arkansas, where I was disappointed when my parents, who were grocery store merchants, did not buy the house we had looked at on Lombardy Lane, Pulaski Heights, Little Rock, Arkansas, with intentions of purchasing it. Thoughts of this house haunted me throughout my life even throughout twenty-five years of living abroad and teaching for the Department of Defense Overseas Dependent Schools throughout Europe. My family actually bought a gorgeous house on Wolfe Street, West Little Rock, in 1945, conveniently placing our family close to then Little Rock High School (now Little Rock Central High) and making it convenient to walk to school and to work at our third grocery store on West Fourteenth Street, Little Rock. The book tells of the many exciting places I lived and taught in the United States and abroad. The House on Lombardy Lane still captivates my thoughts and illusions as to how much more dynamically I would have completed my lifes journey had my parents purchased this fabulous house of my dreams!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mind's eye of a progressive!Writing this introduction was a prestigious honor from my father to bestow on me. The best way I can explain to you that this the man you're about to embark in reading is the most progressively, motivated person I know!Very vigilant, proactive, and always see the forest for the trees! He taught me and my cousins to be the same way. Even more so, his friends and associates all respect him for it! In the experiences that I previously shared, I came to the realization that between my father and I, communication is the key in our relationship between father and son.I'm an introvert by nature, however, highly outspoken and vocal. For this, I give great thanks and appreciation to my father, Arthur H. Bronson Jr., for teaching that communication is the key to any friendship or relationship, especially between a father and child.

Book Masters of the Post

    Book Details:
  • Author : Duncan Campbell-Smith
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2011-11-03
  • ISBN : 0141973226
  • Pages : 840 pages

Download or read book Masters of the Post written by Duncan Campbell-Smith and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of the Post Office go back to the early years of the Tudor monarchy: Brian Tuke, a former King's Bailiff in Sandwich, was acknowledged as the first 'Master of the Posts' by Cardinal Wolsey in 1512, and went on to build up a network of 'postmasters' across England for Henry VIII. Over the following five hundred years the Royal Mail expanded to an unimaginable degree to become the largest employer in the country, and the face of the British state for most people in their everyday lives. But it also faced the demands of an increasingly commercial marketplace. With the election of Margaret Thatcher in 1979, the possibility of privatising the Royal Mail has prompted passionate arguments - and has added immeasurably to the difficulties of running it. In charting the whole of this extraordinary story, Duncan Campbell-Smith recounts a series of remarkable tales, including how postal engineers built the first programmable computer for the wartime code-breakers of Bletchley Park and how the Royal Mail managed to successfully continue delivering post to the front lines during two world wars, but also how they failed to avert the Great Train Robbery of 1963. He brings to life many of the dominant personalities in the Royal Mail's history - from Rowland Hill, who imposed a uniform penny post and set the great Victorian expansion on its way, to Tony Benn who championed the modernisation of the service in the 1960s and Tom Jackson who led the postal workers' biggest union through fifteen frequently stormy years up to 1982. This is the first complete history of the Royal Mail up to the present day, based on its comprehensive archives, and including the first detailed account of the past half-century of Britain's postal history, made possible by privileged access to confidential records. Today's debate over the future of the Royal Mail is shown to be just the ;atest chapter in a centuries-old conflict between its roles raising revenue and serving the public. Will its employees remain, like Brian Tuke's postmasters, servants of the Crown? This book could hardly appear at a more timely moment.

Book Prima Facie

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Thomas
  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release : 2007-12
  • ISBN : 0595470262
  • Pages : 450 pages

Download or read book Prima Facie written by Richard Thomas and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filled with more than eighty compelling and often humorous essays, Prima Facie explores a wide array of subjects-human nature, free will, war, evolution, religion, political correctness, death and taxes. Author Richard Thomas reflects on these subjects and his own life to determine why people act the way they do. Thomas proposes three laws to explain human behavior: Reciprocity. This law states that everyone should have an equivalent exchange of goods for services rendered. We all want fair treatment from our associates. The Leg Up. This law claims that a person will climb over someone else to improve his situation or enforce his supposed superior status. LCD. This law maintains that humans tend to drag each other down to the lowest common denominator (LCD). One person cannot be better than someone else. Thomas argues that the various systems we have created to control our interactions with one another have turned the human race from once fearful, huddling prey into predators who now stalk their own kind. Prima Facie asks us to examine our own lives and beliefs, requires us to recognize the negative impact our everyday behavior has on others, and encourages us to take back responsibility for our destiny.

Book Deconstructing Reagan

Download or read book Deconstructing Reagan written by Kyle Longley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although he left office nearly 20 years ago, Ronald Reagan remains a potent symbol for the conservative movement. The Bush administration frequently invokes his legacy as it formulates and promotes its fiscal, domestic, and foreign policies. His name is watchword for campus conservatives who regard him in a way that borders on hero worship. Conservative media pundits often equate the term "Reagan-esque" with personal honor, fiscal rectitude, and unqualified success in dealing with foreign threats. But how much of the Reagan legacy is based on fact, how much on idealized myth? And what are the reasons - political and otherwise - behind the mythmaking? "Deconstructing Reagan" is a fascinating study of the interplay of politics and memory concerning our fortieth president. While giving credit where credit is due, the authors scrutinize key aspects of the Reagan legacy and the conservative mythology that surrounds it.
