Download or read book The Secret Life of the Savoy written by Olivia Williams and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The captivating story of the famed Savoy Hotel’s founders, told through three generations—and one hundred years—of glamour and high society. For the gondoliers-themed birthday dinner, the hotel obligingly flooded the courtyard to conjure the Grand Canal of Venice. Dinner was served on a silk-lined floating gondola, real swans were swimming in the water, and as a final flourish, a baby elephant borrowed from London Zoo pulled a five-foot high birthday cake. In three generations, the D'Oyly Carte family and London's Savoy Hotel pioneered the idea of the luxury hotel and the modern theater, propelled Gilbert and Sullivan to lasting stardom, made Oscar Wilde a transatlantic celebrity, inspired a P. G. Wodehouse series, and popularized early jazz, electric lights, and Art Deco. Following the history of the iconic Savoy Hotel through three generations of the D'Oyly Carte family, The Secret Life of the Savoy brings to life the extraordinary cultural legacy of the most famous hotel in the world.
Download or read book Mr Wonderful Takes A Cruise written by John Nott and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-06-08 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happened when former Tory cabinet-minister and now bus-pass wielding OAP, Sir John Nott, decided to discover modern London for himself? Real London. Beyond Kensington & Chelsea. As far, even, as Tooting... It all began when Sir John decided to take a crash course in ballroom dancing for an upcoming cruise holiday. Whilst flicking through the 'Ballroom Dancing' section of the Yellow Pages directory, he chanced upon the Mr Wonderful Tea Dances. After a single trip to a Mr Wonderful lunch in Bromley, the onetime Defence Secretary was hooked. And so began an extraordinary odyssey, in which Sir John discovered a whole new side to Britain and began to question the notion of what, exactly, it means to be British in this day and age. In the name of research he risked reconnaissance to China White, Spearmint Rhino and the Countryside March. His observations along the way are irreverent and hilarious, whether venting his spleen over EU farming regulations, or enjoying a colourful wander round Tooting market.

Download or read book Great Nations Still Enchained written by Dr Roy Douglas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The grandeur of the great imperial powers of the nineteenth century - Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary and even the burgeoning United States, was constantly subverted by the cartoonists of the day. As Roy Douglas reveals, cartoons are often more accurate guides to popular feelings than the newspapers in which they appeared. In this, his third look at history through the eyes of the cartoonist, Roy Douglas provides a clear historical narrative which explains the subtle meaning below the surface of the cartoons. Taken from the period leading to the First World War, these cartoons are as fresh - and often as shocking - as the day they were drawn.
Download or read book Digging written by Amiri Baraka and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As a commentator on American music, and African American music in particular, Baraka occupies a unique niche. His intelligence, critical sense, passion, strong political stances, involvement with musicians and in the musical world, as well as in his community, give his work a quality unlike any other. As a reviewer and as someone inside the movement, he writes powerfully about music as few others can or do."—Steven L. Isoardi, author of Central Avenue Sounds: Jazz in Los Angeles "Every jazz musician who has endured beyond changing fashions and warring cultures has had a signature sound. Amiri Baraka—from the very beginning of his challenging, fiery presence on the jazz scene—has brought probing light, between his off-putting thunderclaps, on what is indeed America's classical music. I sometimes disagree insistently with Amiri, and it's mutual; but when he gets past his parochial pyrotechnics, as in choruses in this book, he brings you into the life force of this music."—Nat Hentoff, author of The Jazz Life
